‘The genial maestro of North African swing’ Songlines

Maurice El Medioni is the living legend of Oriental piano. Now 77, the charismatic charmer from Oran, the home of rai music, still mixes an evocative cocktail of Cuban rhythms, French chic and Oriental mellowness. The swinging melodies rekindle the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Oran of the past, when it was a sparkling melting pot of religions and cultures. His latest release Descarga Oriental takes the Cuban-Jewish theme even further, collaborating with eclectic New York based composer and drummer, Roberto Rodriguez.

‘I’ve always loved the way Maurice plays. He represents the times when music was pure and there was no war between Jews and Arabs, when we met to make music and share things.’ Khaled
