Adrianne Greenbaum will be featured on the wood flute playing some of her "new" tunes from FleytMuzik, accompanied by Brian Bender on piano and Roy Weisman on bass. Of course Brian will also play trombone throughout the evening! Of course TKT's core musicians Fraidy Katz and Walter Mamlok will be there to give that TKT tam! (For those asking "Where is Cookie?" she's out and about fiddling across the countryside and will return to us in August.) Beautiful Tanglewood-like setting, so bring your dinners, your chocolate-covered strawberries and dance in the moonlight with us. Yes, again Adrienne Greenbaum will teach dancing before the concert!

This is our third annual KlezFest and it will be more than ever designed to meet the needs of instrumentalists, singers and dancers. The most outstanding faculty members have been invited to guide and inspire and impart their vast knowledge of Eastern European Jewish music and Yiddish song. Expect to see on the KlezFest faculty for 2003:

Michael Alpert - Dance and Ballads
Helen Beer - ballads and drama
Kurt Bjorling – Woodwinds Tsimbl
Stuart Brotman – Rhythm Section
Alan Bern – Piano, Accordion
Christian Dawid - Clarinet
Josh Dolgin – Piano, Accordion
Frank London - Brass

Deborah Strauss - Violin
Jeff Warschauer – Plucked strings

Ruti Halvani and Judith Silver will also be working with singers in small groups, making arrangements for two three and four voices of Yiddish songs. Alan Bern will be the music co-ordinator and he has prepared a vigorous curriculum with clear emphasis on the elements of Klezmer, the style, ornamentation, rhythms and how to set up a band.

There will be masterclasses for serious Yiddish singers as well as the fabulous Yiddish chorus, led by the incomparable Zalmen Mlotek.

We will even have Josh Dolgin the master of HIP HOP klez so anything can happen. Bands attending as a group hopefully get to perform to each other and the public in the ‘Klezmer: the new Generation’ concert. Our own Sophie Solomon of Oi-Va-Voi and others will be on board, so do book up now for an exhilarating week.

Any musician or singer interested in any aspect of Jewish music will be thrilled with what the JMI KlezFest at SOAS University of London has to offer - whether you are a composer, member of an orchestra, a soloist, a student at a conservatoire, a band leader or member, a jazz player or a cantor, or you play, sing or dance just for fun, there is so much for you to enjoy and imbibe.

Klezfest opens on the South Bank on Sunday 6 July

Registration will be from 11.00am in the QEH foyer.

Eve's Women, NYC, Jul 12

I just wanted to let you know about the U.S. debut of "Eve's Women" from Israel who play both traditional klezmer as well as an "Israeli style" of klezmer with strong Middle Eastern, Latin and African influences.

They will be playing along with Chava Alberstein in Brooklyn's Prospect Park in the Celebrate Brooklyn! summer concert series on Saturday, July 12th at 7:30 pm. Here is an article that just came out about them in Israel21c.

These are four top female talents from Israel, coming from a variety of musical backgrounds - from symphony orchestras to the country's hottest rock bands. Consequently, they bring a truly unique and fresh blend of klezmer, jazz, rock and world music sounds.

Klezfest, St. Petersburg, Russia, July 12-16

An international seminar on the traditional music of Eastern European Jewry, to be held July 12-16, 2003 in St. Petersburg, Russia. KlezFest in St. Petersburg," now in its seventh year, is the oldest Klezmer seminar in Russia. The 2003 festival will include master-classes on Yiddish folk songs and Klezmer music, workshops on Yiddish folklore and Yiddish dance, lectures, concerts, and two excursions: "Jewish St. Petersburg" and "Rivers and Canals of St. Petersburg." Our staff will include world-famous musicians -- the world's leading expert on Yiddish dance, violinist, accordion player, vocalist, and ethnomusicologist Michael Alpert from New York, wonderful Yiddish singer and storyteller Shura Lipovsky from Amsterdam, and the outstanding Klezmer clarinetist from Berlin, Christian Dawid.

For more information, please contact the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg via fax at (+7-812) 314-5117, or e-mail Alexander Frenkel.

"KlezFest in St. Petersburg," dedicated to bringing Klezmer music and Yiddish culture back to the lands of their birth, includes Jewish musicians from the vibrant centers of the Jewish renaissance across the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union.

This year again we are pleased to announce a special program for lovers of Yiddish music and culture from other parts of the globe. We are asking for a contribution of $500 ($400 for those who speak either Russian or Yiddish). This sum will include food and lodging in St. Petersburg for 5 days and the entire seminar program, including interpreters when needed, concerts and the two excursions. Participants will pay their own transportation to St. Petersburg.

For more information, please contact the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg via fax at (+7-812) 314-5117, or e-mail Alexander Frenkel.

For advice on travel and visa arrangements, contact our American sponsor, the Jewish Community Development Fund in Russia and Ukraine, a project of the American Jewish World Service (New York), via telephone: (+1-212) 273-1642, or e-mail JCDF in Russia and Ukraine.

Join us at "KlezFest in St. Petersburg" this summer! It is a unique opportunity for you to enjoy wonderful Yiddish melodies and the fantastic city at the Neva River, celebrating this year 300th anniversary of its foundation.

info@sferaculture.com

www.sferaculture.com

Vincoli Sonori was born from a passion for klezmer music and the discovery of the profound links between Jewish and Gypsy musicians in eastern European musical traditions. Music belonging to these two ethnic minorities which, over the centuries and in different continents, have borrowed aspects of other cultures, reinventing them, but without losing their own strong cultural identity. The high quality of the programmes, which is gradually being recognised by the press and the public, makes this an occasion that should not be missed. During the festival, Pinerolo comes to life with a special atmosphere, full of sound that ranges from manouche-jazz to classic Klezmer, performed by the best international groups: The Klezmatics, Urs Karpatz, Maurice El Medioni, Kalman Balogh, Loyko, Colalaila, Brave Old World, Acquaragia Drom, Titi and Ziroli Winterstein, Ando Drom, Bratsch, Klezroym, Note Manouche, Les Yeux Noirs, Odessa Klezmer Band, Shirim, Timna Brauer, Opa Cupa, Slonovski Bal are only some of the exceptional musicians who have animated this festival in the past.

We will be debuting two songs about our relationship to money-- one
is a updated old Yiddish vaudeville song, a biting satire about the
corrupting effects of money, and the second, it's antidote, is a
melodic comparison of money used for good or for selfish purposes.
As usual, we'll be using subtitles and other means for making sure
that the non-Yiddish speakers in our audience will understand

To reclaim an ancestral couch upon which esteemed rabbis slept, Pearl Gluck travels from her Hasidic community in Brooklyn to her roots in Hungary. Along the way, a colorful cast of characters gets involved - the couch exporter, her ex-communist cousin in Budapest, a pair of matchmakers, and a renegade group of formerly ultra-Orthodox Jews. Divan is a visual parable that offers the possibility of personal reinvention and cultural re-upholstery.

Matthew Fass (Zagnut Cirkus Orkestar, Sheqer) and Jeanette Lewicki (SF Klezmer Experience, the gonifs) will play and sing Yiddish, Rom, Balkan and Yankee folk music.

The program also features classic episodes of "The Goldbergs," the popular 1950's sitcom the New York Times calls "The Cosby Show with a Jewish Accent." (NYT, Sunday, July 20.)

Spend a summer evening with us (and the Goldbergs) in the air-conditioned splendor of Cafe Weissman. And be sure to enter the raffle to win our hand-printed, museum-quality CD!

How Much: Pay What You Can

Hankus Netsky in Jam, Boston, MA, Jul 24

So, as I announced last week, this year's NEC klezmer institute was cancelled.

But.....since there was a fairly well-publicized concert scheduled for
Thursday night, July 24 at 7:30 PM in room G14 in the St. Botolph Building (241 St.
Botolph St., Boston)

And since people might show up for that concert anyway...

I've decided to host a klezmer and Yiddish jam session that night, which will
at least feature myself and Michael Winograd.

And if there's an audience, we can pretend it's a concert. A really good
concert.

One word of warning - If you want to get in, be sure to arrive before eight -
they lock the doors (street entrance) to the building at 8.

Also, I think they lock the parking lot entrance even earlier.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to maybe bring something to eat or drink
(non-alcoholic, but we can pretend).

Klezcentricy, Wash DC, Jul 24

Thursday, July 24, 7:30pm
Klezcentricity will be playing a concert at Nottoway Park in Vienna, VA -
part of Fairfax County's music in the parks series.

For one hour, starting at 7:30, we will present the pure klezcentricity of
our unique brew of Odessa underground songs and dances, nurishkeyt from
Constaninople, David and Wendy's originals, and sneak previews from an
upcoming CD project!

Bring the family - bring your dancing shoes.
