press info:
Juez is self described as breakbeat klezmer jazz; the group draws on klezmer modes in a unique exploration of jazz and progressive rock rhythms with influences ranging from Yemenite to hip-hop.

With his long beard and black hat, Hasidic reggae superstar Mattissyahu is the face of a new cultural fusion. He integrates the power of reggae music into his life in Lubavitcher Crown Heights, as much as he integrates the connectedness he finds in Hasidut into his music.

One of the best beatboxers alive, Yuri Lane is currently doing a residency at the DC JCC as part of the tour of his one-man show “From Tel Aviv to Ramalla; A Travelogue of Peace”.

dj handler brings his unique mix of breaks, indie hip hop, Ashkenazi cantorial samples and Yemenite melodies to produce something that messes with your mind and forces your body to the dance floor.

Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust
36 Battery Place
New York, NY 10280

Shabbat Shira, the Torah portion that recounts the Israelites crossing the Red Sea and the musical celebration that ensued, is the inspiration for a special doube-bill of Hasidic music by some of the genre's most innovative artists.

bandAffectionately referred to as the "Hasidic Hendrix" and the "Sephardic Santana", Yossi Piamenta is one of the most celebrated artists in Hasidic music. For this concert, The Piamenta Band will perform favorites and new music from their most recent album, Sason V'Simcha: A Piamenta Wedding.

Musical polymath Frank London (Klezmatics) brings together two groups for this special performance. Shekhina (Aaron Alexander and Greg Wall, among others) is a group of improvising musicians who are equally at home playing at a Hasidic wedding or a downtown jazz club. Kol Isha (Adrienne Cooper and Tine Kinderman, among others) are a collective of women who sing traditional mystical Hasidic music. Both groups are featured on London's release Scientists at Work and on the soundtrack to the film Divan.

Before the big klezmer bands of New York arose with their brass and clarinets, there were the archetypical Jewish orchestras of the old world, led by the fiddle and bourne aloft by the otherworldy sounds of the harp-like 'tsimbl', or Jewish hammered dulcimer. Renowned violinist Alicia Svigals, a founder of the Klezmatics and the world's foremost klezmer fiddler, presents a program of those ancient and ecstatic Jewish melodies. Accompanied by 'tsimblist' Pete Rushefsky, one of the few musicians in the world to have mastered this demanding instrument; virtuoso bass player Jim Guttman of the Klezmer Conservatory Band; and N.Y.'s top scholar of the Jewish groove, drummer Aaron Alexander of Hasidic New Wave. Come prepared to party with Alicia in the ancient manner, and to commune with beloved ghosts from the East European Jewish past.

Mikveh: Alicia Svigals, Adrienne Cooper, Lauren Brody, Susan Hoffman Watts, Catherine Popper
Mikveh is a supergroup of the top women in klezmer, including renowned Yiddish singer Adrienne Cooper, Klezmatics founder Alicia Svigals on fiddle, charismatic trumpeter Susan Watts of the Hoffman klezmer dynasty, ethnic accordion wizard Lauren Brody, and soulful bass player Catherine Popper. Together, they rock out with sizzling dance music and riveting Yiddish/English songs, both ancestral and brand new.

LIVE CONCERT + COMMUNITY EVENT + DJ MEDICINEMAN + ROULETTES DANCE + DANCE CLASS + SHISHA LOUNGE

On November 5, Lula Lounge & David Buchbinder inaugurated "Feast of the East," an unprecedented series of Wednesday night dance parties that feature funked-up dance rhythms from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Drawing on the music of the Jews, Arabs, Greeks and Roma, the sound of Feast of the East is the sound of radical roots: traditional, yet filtered through the prism of Toronto, a rainbow of the world’s richest colours. Feast of the East dance-music hybrid features numerous local jazz luminaries and a plethora of globally-grounded musical friends. Feast of the East harmonious intoxication presents a challenge to all those who delight in dance . Join us for our first step into Feast of the East - if you are not moved to dance, we’ll refund your cover charge!

Feast of the East is built around ensembles led by trumpeter and composer David Buchbinder, including the expanded, dance version of his Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band (Eastern European Jewish fusion music), Buchbinder’s Brass (Roma dance music) & Medina (Arabic music), as well as hot world music band Maza Meze performing Greek & Arabic dance music. Feast… will be dedicated to creating not only one of the hottest dance parties in Toronto but a complete event, with visual and olfactory delights to accompany the expected auditory awesomeness.

In addition to the music Feast of the East will feature: The Roulettes-awesomely hip Bellydance troupe led by Roula Said ~ Dance lessons in Jewish, Balkan & Arabic dance ~ the Belly-a-Go-Go pillar dancers ~ the Shisha Smoking Lounge (authentic Middle Eastern hookah experience)

Musicians (for the first two events) include: David Buchbinder, Dave Wall, Marilyn Lerner, Andrew Downing, Daniel Barnes, Bob Stevenson, John Johnson, Stephen Donald, Levon Ickhanian, William Carn, Debashis Sinha, Rick Shadrach Lazar, Mai Kelly, Jeff Wilson, Robert Botos ; Maryem Tollar, Ernie Tollar, Sophia Gregoriadas, Jennifer Moore, Debashis Sinha, , Jayne Brown, John Gzowski Brenna McCrimmon

Toronto DJ MEDICINEMAN is known for his adventurous blends of musical styles and sonic landscapes. For the past two years he has hosted 'No Man's Land' on CIUT radio and has earned a reputation for his on-going exploration into the evolution of world music. His sets flow from soothing ancient rhythms and textures through rippling primitive and progressive beats, always challenging musical boundaries and traditions.

Yoel Ben-Simhon didn’t set out to explore his roots. An Israeli born of Moroccan parentage, Mr. Ben-Simhon pursued his academic studies at the Mannes School of Music and received his MFA in music composition from Hunter College in 1998.

During his MA studies in music composition, he devoted himself to exploring the subject of Jewish music in Morocco and how it contributes to the heritage of Jewish communities in the countries of origin and in Israel itself.

It was not long before Ben-Simhon found himself learning to play the Oud, a Middle-Eastern relative of the guitar. Soon he began learning the classic songs of the Moroccan Jews, and with it, the Judeo-Arabic dialect they spoke as vernacular.

His musical journey led him to realize that Jewish music shares a great deal with its Arab and Berber cousins. After Mr. Ben-Simhon returned from his first trip to Morocco, he captured his Jewish Moroccan musical experience in Mediterranean Collage. Similar in structure to the Arab nueba, the work was scored for voice, violin, nay (Arabic flute), qanun (Arabic zither), oud (Arabic lute), piano, bass, darbuka (hand drum), riqq (tambourine) and duff (frame drum).

Yoel Ben-Simhon says, "Sultana was the name of my grandmother, a very inspirational figure in my life, who was born in Mogador, Morocco. As a verb, saltana means 'to dominate' or 'to govern' and of course sultana means Queen." Sultana also means 'sublime', the enjoyment communicated by a performer to the audience through the artistic and technical mastery of the instrument or voice.

The Sultana Ensemble performed in many music venues throughout the US. such as: United Nations General Assembly Hall, The Jewish Museum in Manhattan, Baltimore Jewish Federation, Princeton University, Hunter College of CUNY and many others.

He brings it to Chicago in mid-March with a pared down ensemble for 2 performances.

About 10 years ago I was drafted as music director for a
puppet theater production of "The Dybbuk" here in Portland.
(Since then I've worked on two other productions of the same
play, leading me to speculate that while possession might

9/10 of my musical activity.)

After all this time, "Between Two Worlds/The Dybbuk" has been remounted, and this time it's going on the road. In New York, there are three performances: Thu 2/19 8 pm, Sat 2/21 8 pm, and Sun 2/22 3 pm at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th St. For ticket info: (917) 606-8200.

alicia svigalsBefore the big klezmer bands of New York arose with their brass and clarinets, there were the archetypical Jewish orchestras of the old world, led by the fiddle and borne aloft by the otherworldly sounds of the harp-like "tsimbl", or Jewish hammered dulcimer. This evening, the world's leading klezmer fiddler, the renowned Alicia Svigals, co-founder of the legendary Klezmatics, presents a program of these ancient and ecstatic Jewish melodies, accompanied by "tsimbler" Pete Rushefsky, one of the few musicians in the world to have mastered this traditional instrument. Join these two great figures in the revival and revitalization of "Old World" Jewish music a week before Purim for a musical communion with beloved ghosts from this Eastern European past.
