Intro to Yiddish, song, dance, & klezmer music, workshop, Weimar, Germany, 31 Jul - 3 Aug 2013

Shpilndik! Zingendik! Tantsndik! (Play! Sing! Dance!) July 31 - August 3

A Hands-On Introduction to Klezmer Instrumental Music, Yiddish Song, and Dance

With Deborah Strauss, Jeff Warschauer

Weimar, Germany, part of "Yiddish Summer Weimar"

Whether you have some experience as a klezmer player, Yiddish singer or dancer, or are completely new to the style, this hands-on workshop offers a feast of Eastern European Yiddish instrumental, vocal music and dance.

This workshop will be taught with a lively, integrated approach—a marriage of instruments, singing and movement. Working by ear and with written music, we will explore ways to express the full potential of Yiddish music and dance, as individuals and as a group. Daily topics will include Eastern European Jewish modality, klezmer phrasing, articulation and ornamentation, Yiddish song repertoire and style, and Yiddish dance steps, gestures and movement.

Open to all instrumentalists, singers and dancers. All ages and backgrounds
welcome. No knowledge of Yiddish or previous experience necessary.

Incorporating post-immigrant sounds rooted in klezmer, Saul
Goodman’s music moves the spirit and the dance. It’s always
a simcha with Saul!

Lisa Gutkin, City Winery Brunch, NYC, 11 Aug 2013

Paul ShapiroEvery Sunday Morning, combining live music and food in a fresh, cultural environment, City Winery’s Klezmer brunch series pairs some of the greatest musicians in the world with delicious lox, bagels and other tasty fare on Sunday mornings from 11am to 2pm. City Winery's brunch on Aug. 11, 2013 features Lisa Gutkin.

Can one artist be both unpredictable and a surefire bet? If that artist is Lisa Gutkin, the answer is an emphatic yes! As the longtime violinist for the Klezmatics, the Grammy-winning outfit that has taken Jewish klezmer music to previously unimaginable places, Gutkin has consistently proven a masterful musician and a boundlessly creative force. But, in her solo performances and in collaboration with other musicians, Gutkin might swing seamlessly from traditional Irish fiddle tunes to a blues, to Balkan or bluegrass sounds. Or she might just put the violin down altogether, pick up a tenor guitar and sing one of her own universally resonant compositions.

Hoeveoversloot, a beautiful large barn converted into an art gallery in the woods in
Slotweg 42
Egmond a/d Hoef (not far from Alkmaar), the Netherlands

I've played there before and had a great response with the public.. the place has a good following and great atmosphere..! Really lovely, alternative atmosphere there.. (just like the "good old days"!) Entrance is free and drinks are quite reasonable. Donations are suggested for the band. If you're anywhere near there make it down.. it's really a special atmosphere! We play our regular repertoire including our "evergreens", plus some great jazz standards.
Hope to see y'all.. Burton

Monday, AUGUST 12, 7pm - 8pm

Center for Jewish History
YIVO Institute
15 West 16th St. (between 5th and 6th Avenues)
New York, NY

On August 12th, 1952, the cream of the crop of the Soviet Yiddish world were summarily executed as retribution for their support of the war effort against Nazi Germany. 61 years later, we show that we have not forgotten them and that we still remember them, for their contributions to both literature and to humankind.

The Congress for Jewish Culture, together with COJECO, the Jewish Labor Committee, the National Yiddish Theater-Folksbiene, The Workmen's Circle/ Arbeter-Ring, and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research cordially invite you to attend a
Memorial program for the Yiddish artists and writers who suffered under Stalinist repression

This year's program will have a significant English component.

Professor Tevye Bird will chair.
Professor Marc Caplan will speak on Dovid Bergelson's Berlin period.

Lost and Found Project: Folksbiene.ru
Anna Zicer Medvinsky (narration), Yelena Shmulenson (narration), and
Dmitri Zisl Slepovitch (bass clarinet) will present works by Leyb Kvitko.

Paula Teitelbaum will sing and recite poems of the murdered writers.

Jewish Heritage Night@Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA, 20 Aug 2013

Federation’s Jewish Heritage Night at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, Aug. 20, is an ideal opportunity to celebrate Jewish music, kosher food and great Phillies baseball with family and friends.

As fans enter the park, they will be treated to performances by Klez with Class, a five-piece group of professional klezmer and jazz musicians featuring lead vocalist Cantor David Green of Congregation Beth Or in Maple Glen. Thirty members of Nashirah, the only auditioned, community-based chorale in the Greater Philadelphia area that performs Jewish and Jewish-themed music, will thrill the crowd with a stirring rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Federation President Sherrie Savett will throw out the first pitch before the start of the 7:05 p.m. matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Colorado Rockies. Kosher food will be available for purchase throughout the game at a special kiosk located by the third-base gate. There will be special surprises between innings. Who knows when and where the famed Phillie Phanatic may make his appearance?

Tix available online at: www.jewishphilly.org.

Individuals, synagogue groups or other organizations may also order tickets by calling Matt Kessler, manager of Premium Sales and Services for the Phillies, at 215-463-5000, Ext. 5663. Groups of 25 or more will see their name in lights on the auxiliary message boards during the game.
