And sooo many more surprises, all taking place in a beautiful new(ish) venue called Salle Piano & Events — a showroom/performance space featuring exceptional collectible pianos (one of which will be played for you by our very own keyboardticklemeister, Dan Cantrell).

Hanukkah celebration, Slocan Lake, BC, Canada, 2 Dec 2013

You and yours are invited to an evening of music, theater and dancing
Celebrating Hanukkah at the Silverton Gallery
Tuesday, December 3rd
Stage show with The Nelson Hanukkah Ensemble 7 pm, Community Dinner 6 pm

This year the Gallery staff is thrilled to present a four piece band with a great repertoire of highly dancable Jewish music, including Klezmer, Sephardic and Israeli songs.

This group of musicians are among the top players in the Kootenays!

Clarinetist Nicola Everton was with the Vancouver Symphony for twenty years, and has done extensive recording and touring. She is now Artistic Director of the Kootenay Gallery Concert Series, and has taught at the Valhalla Summer School of Music.

Bass player Rob Fahie is also an amazing player, having completed 2 degrees in Jazz and Classical music. He has toured internationally with high profile Canadian artists like Ranee Lee, Sophie Milman and Nikki Yanofsky. He has played at The Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club and Iridium in New York City as well as the Catalina Jazz Club, The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.

Accordionist Catherine McGrath is a well known folk musician and broadcaster in the West Kootenays. She was a founding member of Nelson's Heavy Shtetl, a klezmer and traditional jazz band, Cattle Annie, The Crooked Corral, a western swing group, and Kootenay Kontraband, an old-time dance band.

Singer Allan Merovitz is a legend in Canadian Klezmer circles. Allan, who is based in Calgary, has recorded and toured North America and Europe with top Klezmer and Yiddish groups, and has headed up his own band, KlezMerovitz. He has been nominated for a Juno, and won a CBC Etoiles-Galaxy award with his group Merovitz Project, in Montreal.

An experienced stage actor and storyteller, Allan will tell the story of the First Hanukkah in Canada, as experienced by Aaron Hart, an immigrant who fought with the British back in the 18th century, and then built a fur trading empire in Lower Canada.
Hanukkah celebrations are all about kids, and this year we have a group of young musicians who will perform a song or two

Introducing International Klezmer duo Knakl

Wednesday, December 4, 2013, 8pm (Doors, 6pm)
The back streets,
Marrickville, New South Wales 2204 Australia

Direct from Shir Madness Sydney Jewish Music Festival Knakl play at Django Bar for one night only. Join us for the Australian launch of their debut album – Meeting Moyshe.

Out of the Moishe Beregovskii Collection concert series at the Jewish Salon in Hamburg in 2012, Knakl has emerged with a unique offering that pays homage to the field recordings of Moishe Beregovskii. With enormous respect given to the interpretation of their musical ancestors, Knakl presents their own interpretation that moves beyond the traditional style of Klezmer to include their personal style of free improvisation. It is a meeting across generations. From what Beregovskii left behind, Knakl have – inspired by history – gone their own way.

"Wandering Stars" CD Launch, London, UK, 5 Dec 2013

Julian Futter and Mike Aylward are proud to announce the launch of a new CD - "Wandering Stars" – the story of Gimpel’s Lemberg Yiddish theatre.

We are launching this CD on Thursday 5 Dec at 8.00p.m. at the New London Synagogue, 33 Abbey Rd, London, NW8 0AT and anyone who is in London is welcome to come.

In 1900 Lemberg was one of the most important cities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire with a population of 160,000, of whom a third were Jewish. The Lemberg theatre was the first permanent and most important Yiddish theatre in Europe.
Sholem Aleichem visited in 1905 and based his novel “Wandering Stars” on his experiences there.

In 1910 Franz Kafka was profoundly affected when he saw members of the troupe perform in Prague , Joseph Roth and Mark Chagall were also hugely influenced by what they saw.

The theatre gave birth to a unique form of musical drama that to a significant extent shaped popular American culture.

Thanks to the efforts of a small band of record collectors and discographers operating worldwide, many of these records have been documented and copies located and it is now possible for the first time in over 100 years to give a voice to this silenced civilization whose destruction has been rigorously documented, but whose achievements have so far been largely unexplored. Listen to songs about weddings, wild women, drinking, the original Yidl mit sein Fidl, a Hatikvah recorded in 1909, an out of control Simchas Torah and, of course, Sex.

The recordings are accompanied by a richly illustrated, full colour, 40 page booklet which places the theatre in its historical context, provides full biographies of the artists and detailed information on all the recordings.

CD available online: www.honestjons.com/shop.php?pid=43514&CatID=124

The And of Two Trio (Shira Kammen, Kaila Flexer & Tobias Roberson) will perform on Saturday, December 7.

The Teslim Trio (Gari Hegedus, Kaila Flexer and Tobias Roberson) will take the stage on Sunday, December 8.

We're all very excited about some original pieces (including several world premieres!) inspired by the music of Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. We will also present new arrangements of traditional music from these same places. This promises to be two very special evenings of trios.

And now for some completely unrelated news: I have a new obsession: SUCCULENTS!!! I love them--they are quirky, surprising and addictive! I hereby announce this the first Concert/Succulent Exchange.

If (and only if) you want to, please come to the concerts below bearing a small succulent plant. We will have a table on which you can place your plant and at the end of the concert, you can leave with a different succulent!

(upcoming Tzadik release Spring 2014)

Sat, Dec 21, 2013, 8pm
Beit Chaverim Synagogue of Westport
85 Post Rd West
Westport, CT

This new series at Rabbi Greg Wall's Beit Chaverim synagogue in Westport, CT, will present exciting performances by the most cutting-edge performers in Jewish music today.

Led by guitarist and composer Ty Citerman, Bop Kabbalah plays rhythmic, dynamic and lyrical music that takes some of the language of klezmer, modal niggunim, jazz, and 21st century concert music…and then twists and recontextualizes it. It’s not really what you’d hear in most synagogues or at most weddings, but of course, those aren’t the only places to hear Jewish music!

Ty Citerman - guitar
Ben Holmes - trumpet
