An evening with Theodore Bikel: A celebration and concert

Sat, Mar 1, 7:30pm
Berklee Performance Center
136 Massachusetts Ave
Boston, MA

How many people can claim they were in both The African Queen and Fiddler on the Roof? Folk singer; theater, film and television actor; radio host; president of Actors’ Equity; political activist; Jewish spokesman and author; these are just some of Theodore Bikel’s many accomplishments. He’s an icon, a beacon of Yiddishkeit and humanitarianism. This is his first appearance in Boston in years, just months before his 90th birthday. Joining Mr. Bikel in concert, under the musical direction of Boston’s own Hankus Netsky, will be acclaimed accordionist Merima Ključo, Rosalie Gerut, Frank London, Daniel Kahn, Josh ‘Socalled” Dolgin, and the Bessere Velt Chorus of the Workmens Circle of Boston.

An Evening with Peter Himmelman

Tue, Mar 4, 8pm
Bentley College, Adamian Academic Center
175 Forest Street
Waltham, MA

USA Today calls Peter Himmelman “one of rock’s most wildly imaginative performers.” Whether rocking out, creating crazy audience participation games or singing a Yiddish lullaby, this Grammy-nominated singer songwriter is not to be missed. Peter’s music is finely crafted, direct and honest. From having a video on MTVs rotation in 1985 to leading corporate creativity training music workshops, Peter has seen both the glory and the underside of the music business. He has provided music to such hit shows as ER, Judging Amy, and Bones. He recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign for his new cd featuring musicians Leland Sklar and Jim Keltner. Yes, he really is Bob Dylan’s son-in-law, too.

"Score: East and West", London, UK, 13 Mar, 2014

Score: East and West - silent film with live music

Thursday 13th March 7.30pm
JW3,
341-351 Finchley Road,
London, NW3 6ET
Doors open 7.30pm.

Lemez Lovas (Oi Va Voi, Shtetl Superstars, Yiddish Twist Orchestra), directs musicians Moshikop Yaniv Fridel and Rohan Kriwaczek in an irreverent live performance of a score for East and West, especially prepared for the JW3.

In Sidney M. Goldin and Ivan Abramson's silent movie (1923), streetwise New Yorker Mollie (Molly Picon) travels to her demure cousin's wedding in a traditional Polish shtetl. Lovas, Moshikop and Kriwaczek's cheeky new score takes us from traditional klezmer to contemporary electronica, from liturgical melancholy to party pop kitsch and from vaudeville to breakbeat. As love blossoms between East and West, and the musical narrative unfolds, traditional and modern worlds are brought into collision.

Dudu Tassa and the Kuwaitis

Thu, Mar 13, 8:00pm
Johnny D's
17 Holland St.
Somerville, MA

Dudu Tassa is one of Israel’s most popular rock stars. Tonight, you can hear him in an intimate club setting. Like many Israeli artists, Tassa is finding creative inspiration by exploring his musical roots; he’s researched and rejuvenated the music of his grandfather and great uncle, known as the Al-Kuwaiti brothers, who, despite their being Jewish, led one of the most popular and influential bands in Iraq and the Arab world in the early 20th century.

The Somerville Symphony Orkestar opens the show with their Slavic fun and funk.

Tickets: $18 in advance, $20 at the door. For general admission tickets, or dinner reservations that assures you guaranteed seating, click here or call 617-776-2004 from 4-7pm daily.

In keeping with the flow of energies between Persians and Jews documented in the Scroll of Esther...The Sway Machinery will be joined by Mitra Sumara, a band that plays pre-Revolutionary Iranian pop music, leaning heavily towards the funkiness that was the zeit-geist of serious music heads in the '70s. You will surely enjoy what they bring.

Also in attendance will be local favorite and Mehanata regular, DJ Joro Boro, keeping things warm before, after and between sets.

Dudu Tassa, Austin, TX, 15 Mar, 2014

Dudu Tassa

Sat, 03/15, 9:00pm

307 E. 5th Street
Austin, TX

With his band, The Kuwatis, Dudu Tassa summons the work of two Iraqi-Jewish composers, Daoud and Saleh Al Kuwaiti (who happen to also be his grandfather and his great-uncle), to create an Israeli pop-rock informed by Arabic tradition.

“It was interesting to do,” Tassa recalls. “I was ready for something new. I was bored with Israeli pop music. And this struck something in me. I asked my mom for recordings of her father and I went to Israel radio to see what they had. Honestly, it wasn’t easy to listen to them – my ears weren’t used to such sad music and the melodies were difficult.”

In the end, he listened to over 200 pieces of music by the brothers for his Al Kuwaiti project. His choices turned out to be pieces he knew.

“I connected to those songs my mother sang when I was a child. I’d listen and I knew them I picked songs that I thought I could take to the West, where I could imagine harmonies in the music.”

Dudu Tassa is a bona fide Israeli rock star: one of the nation’s most beloved singer/songwriters and most-called guitarists-on-demand. He has released eight albums, produced numerous others, and composed for television and cinema. In this performance, he and his band sing the songs of Tassa’s grandfather and great-uncle, Saleh and Daud Al-Kuwaiti. Performing as the Al-Kuwaiti brothers, they were two of the greatest composer-musicians in Baghdad during the first half of the 20th century and acclaimed innovators of modern Iraqi music. They’re still highly esteemed in the Arab world.

Tassa saluted them in his 2011 album “Dudu Tassa and the Al Kuwaitis,” singing their songs in Arabic and Hebrew, and integrating them with Iraqi, Middle Eastern, and Israeli rock music. The album, a top seller in Israel, also features archival materials from the Kuwaitis and singer Faiza Rushdie as well as contributions by contemporary oud master Yair Dalal. Dalal will join Tassa and his band – featuring qanun (Middle Eastern zither), violin, cello, keyboards, guitars, bass and drums – on stage at Yoshi’s San Francisco as a special guest. Concert produced with generous support from the Israel Center & the Consulate General of Israel in San Francisco

Newish Jewish festival logoNinet Tayeb was first introduced to the music scene when she was only 19 years old after winning the flagship season of the Israel’s version of “Pop Idol” in 2003. Becoming a household name overnight, Tayeb’s career grew into what many critics have hailed as a wild Cinderella story phenomena, as Ninet who was still living with her parents in the country at the time- decided to pick up her guitar and begin exploring the music scene in Tel Aviv. Ninet’s debut album was released in 2006, selling Platinum in less than 24 hours- charting no less than 5 singles that became instant number one hits on national radio through out the country. Her second album, written and produced by Ninet herself was released in 2009, again receiving overwhelming critical success. In 2012 “Sympathetic Nervous System”, Ninet’s first album in English was released in Israel receiving amazing reviews and was followed by a successful tour across Country. Not resting, Only a year later, Ninet’s 4th album saw light “All the Animals Knew”, again Ninet earning beautiful response from Radio, Media and fans. Now Days while touring for over a year with her latest album Ninet is working on her 5th and looking into an international carrier.

Yula Beeri is an Israeli, ex-punk icon, vocal powerhouse, and all around musical savant, sinking her dainty teeth into punk cabaret, infectious dance pop, poignant rock opera, and a haunting a cappella ensemble.

With its highly accessible ethnic world music mix and ability to get an audience on its feet, the Afro-Semitic Experience is redefining the jazz concert. This seven-piece band is beyond category. Whether playing gospel, klezmer, nigunim, spirituals or swing, the Afro-Semitic Experience rocks the room with its intricate, infectious melodies and solid grooves. It’s multi-cultural soul. Afro-Semitic Experience concerts are celebrations: the band plays great music, tells stories and offers a positive and meaningful message: unity in the community.

Co-founded by African-American jazz pianist Warren Byrd and Jewish-American jazz bassist David Chevan in 1998, the ASE has shared its music at concerts, workshops and worship services across the United States, Canada and Europe. Venues include the Amsterdam Festival of Jewish Music, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Detroit Festival of Jewish Music, Portland Jazz Festival, New York Noise Festival, Eldridge Street Synagogue and Paris Festival of Jewish Culture. The band has worked with outstanding artists from the jazz and klezmer worlds, including Frank London and Matt Darriau of the Klezmatics, as well as Cantors Alberto Mizrahi and Jack Mendelson.

The ASE features Will Bartlett on saxophone, Alvin Benjamin Carter, Jr., and Baba David Coleman on percussion, Stacy Phillips on resonator (slide) guitar and violin, and Saskia Laroo on trumpet.

“Never before have I heard this lyrically powerful a fusion of Jewish and jazz souls on fire,” wrote critic Nat Hentoff in The Wall Street Journal.
