Often called a “Jewish roots band,” The Klezmatics have been playing — and celebrating — the heritage of Eastern European Jewish music and Yiddish culture for more than 25 years. Although tradition is at the core of what they do, the Klezmatics have developed a unique musical hybrid, rooted in the klezmer genre but very much of the modern world. Not familiar with klezmer? No worries. Previous experience is not required in order to be transported by the Klezmatics to another place and time.

Annette Maye – clarinet, bassclarinet
Martin Schulte – guitar

New Yiddish Rep: "Seltzer Nights" NYC, 18 Apr 2015

New Yiddish Rep’s “Seltzer Nights” will shake things up this spring!

Sat, Apr 18, 2015, 7pm
Castillo Theatre
543 W. 42nd St.
NYC

Tickets are $35. Call Ovation Tix at 866/811-4111, www.newyiddishrep.org or visit the Castillo Theatre box office, 543 West 42nd Street.

An audacious new show headlined by the preeminent Yiddish vaudevillian Shane Baker and starring a cast of tens will shake things up at New York this winter. “Seltzer Nights” recreates the bawdy, boisterous and often back-biting atmosphere of a Yiddish music hall on the Lower East Side of a century ago, but with much better acoustics. Staged as an immersive theatrical cabaret, this star-infested variety show features a who’s who of the booming downtown Yiddish theater and music scene. “Seltzer Nights” dusts off some of the more risqué songs and comedy routines of the time as well as some of the more blatantly theatrical moments of popular melodrama that were all the rage on the Yiddish rialto. Summoning up the spirits of legends like Molly Picon, Jenny Goldstein, Jacob Adler, Boris Thomashefsky, Dzigan and Schumackher, and Fanny Brice, “Seltzer Nights” will keep you up at night. Just like a good pastrami sandwich!

Written and transcribed by surviving Ukrainian Jewish writers of the Kiev Cabinet for Jewish Culture after the war as a testament to their struggle for survival, these rare Yiddish artifacts were confiscated and hidden by the Soviet government in 1949, and have only recently come to light. Learn about the incredible stories behind these treasures, savour the music and revel in the creativity of Yiddish-speaking Holocaust survivors.

The Prince of Kosher Gospel returns to the JCC for another high-energy captivating performance. Joshua brings his extraordinary message of hope, unity and spirituality through Kosher gospel, a marriage of Jewish religious lyrics and meanings with the soulful sounds of American gospel music.
For Joshua Nelson, kosher gospel is a way to claim both parts of his identity as a Black Jew. Kosher gospel has been able to retain the same musical cultures of Black African Muslims and Jews with that soul-inflected vocalizations which filled the Black Hebrew synagogue Joshua attended as a child with his family, observant Jews who traced their lineage back to Senegal.
Come join us as we celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut as a community.

An evening in honor of Yiddish poet Ida Maze, Boston, MA, 28 Apr 2015

The "Den Mother" of Yiddish Montreal: An Evening in Honor of Poet Ida Maze

Tuesday, April 28, 2015, 7 p.m.
Vilna Shul
18 Phillips St.
Boston, MA

Maze (1893-1962) was well known for her lyrical poetry, which was published widely in Yiddish journals and newspapers. She was equally well known for the central role she played in Montreal's Yiddish cultural scene, including acting as a literary mentor to many young writers--a role that prompted some to dub her the "den mother of Yiddish Montreal."

The evening will include a bilingual reading of Maze's work and a screening of a new short film about Maze, produced by the Yiddish Book Center's Wexler Oral History Project. The film, which includes excerpts from the project's 2013 interview with Irving Massey, Maze's youngest son, is the first of a series drawn from the project's Beyond the Books: Yiddish Writers and Their Descendants, interviews with the families of Yiddish literary figures.

Massey, professor emeritus of English and comparative literature at the State University of New York at Buffalo, will be at the event and will participate in a discussion with the audience after the screening.

Co-sponsored by the Yiddish Book Center, Jewish Women's Archive, and the Boston Yidish-Hoyz. This event takes place during National Poetry Month.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, visit yiddishbookcenter.org/events.
