David cut his musical teeth on klezmer music, and began as a bandleader by founding the iconic Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. For this Hart House concert David returns to his roots by assembling an all-star ensemble to dig deep into traditional Klezmer music, featuring some little-heard, hauntingly beautiful music that will meet the more familiar sound of celebration.

Join us for Hanukkah candle lighting, lots of singing, and a concert of traditional and contemporary Jewish folk songs. Hebrew, Yiddish and English songs arranged for four-part harmony. Nigunim Community Chorus meets weekly at the JCC East Bay and other locations around the Bay Area. This forty member group is dedicated to learning, preserving and performing traditional Jewish music of the Diaspora and Israel. The event will signify the completion of the chorus’ fall season. New singers are welcome to audition for spring season in January.

From American classical music to Broadway show tunes, Jewish-American composers defined much of American popular music in the 1920s-50s. In this lecture-concert, Orin Grossman (Fairfield University) and the artists of the Sidney Krum Concert Series explore three giants of American music and the Jewish influences on their work: Aaron Copland (1900-1990), George Gershwin (1898-1937), and Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Works performed and discussed will include Copland’s “Vitebsk,” Gershwin’s “Mischa, Yascha, Toscha, Sascha,” and Bernstein’s “I Am Easily Assimilated.”
