We will perform three of the poems by Helena Grin (nee Neumann) which we set to music. In 1943, Helena (Hinda) Grin and her husband Rachmiel were murdered in the concentration camp Yanowska. Helena was a gifted poet. We would like to thank her niece Judith (Yehudit Shalev Amit) for making the texts available to us.She will join us for the concert together with her sister Nechama Biedermann.

Three renowned performers of Eastern European Jewish music come together in this exceptional new trio: Lorin Sklamberg, co-founder of the legendary Klezmatics; uniquely innovative clarinetist Merlin Shepherd, and the remarkable vocalist/pianist Polina Shepherd, originally from Siberia.
Each performer represents a different nation, yet their backgrounds are closely related, their ancestors emigrating from the Ukraine to find a better world elsewhere. This fresh collaboration blends traditional and contemporary Yiddish and Russian song with klezmer styles and Southern Mediterranean music. Influenced by several cultures and maintaining individual styles, the trio plays original and traditional material with freedom and spontaneity. With mournful solo clarinet, bouncy village songs, and some fiery vocals, their performance takes us on a breathtaking musical journey that is full of spirited joy and deep emotion.

Guy MendilowThe Guy Mendilow Ensemble: Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom

Saturday, Sep 10, 2016, 7:30pm
Vilna Shul
18 Phillips Street,
Boston, MA 02114

Journey from Salonica to Sarajevo, following the stories of vagabond queens, pauper poets and lovers lost to the sea. The intertwining music and storytelling conjure an imagi-nation lost to war and upheaval, recorded in a language that blends archaic Spanish with Arabic, Hebrew and Greek. Forgotten Kingdom brings these tales to life, drawing on musicians' expertise and instrumentation from homelands of Israel, Palestine, Argentina and the USA. Soulful voices, masterful narration, heart-pounding percussion, and intricate soundscapes render these songs in all their color, drama and heart.
