This concert will explore music of composer Annie Gosfield that takes its inspiration from Jewish culture, history, and the New York immigrant experience. A longtime resident of New York City’s East Village, Gosfield has been hailed “a star of the downtown scene,” (The New Yorker), and her music has been described as “imaginative” and “exuberant” (The New York Times).

A discussion with Gosfield on Jewish identity, her family history in the Lower East Side and the influence of Jewish history and culture on her work will bring the evening to a close.

The Disorientalists

Thursday 4th May 2017 | From 8pm
Rich Mix,
35-47 Bethnal Green Road,
London, E1 6LA UK

Tickets £10 advance available here, £12 Door

Part klezmer cabaret, part oriental ragtime, part theatrical storytelling, Berlin-based The Disorientalists are presented by Dash Arts and Nest Collective.

Disorientalists are Yuriy Gurzhy (RotFront, Russendisko, Born in UA), Daniel Kahn (Daniel Kahn and Te Painted Bird, Brothers Nazarof, Semer Ensemble) and Marina Frenk (Marina & Kapelsky, Real Baba Dunyah). The three Berliners-bychoice joined forces to write and perform a piece of musical theatre based on the life of Essad Bey a.k.a. Kurban Said a.k.a. Lev Nussimbaum, author of the great Romeo and Juliet-esque novel 'Ali and Nino', set in Baku during the upheaval of the Russian revolution. A little bit folkloristic, a little bit klezmer, incorporating elements of swing and oriental romance, Gurzhy and three other band members perform songs inspired by Essad Bey on baglama, accordion and piano.

Yiddish songs of struggle and protest, Sharon, MA, 19 May, 2017

Yiddish songs of struggle and protest Cantors Jeff Klepper and Becky Khitrik, with the Temple Sinai Choir present annual Gussman Service Fri, May 19, 2017, 7:30pm - 8:30pm Temple Sinai 25 Canton Street Sharon MA 02067 p: (781) 784-6081 "These biting songs are very different than the lullabies and comedic songs we often associate with Yiddish music. They are political songs, sung originally at meetings of the Jewish Bund (labor union) early in the 20th century. Some of them originated in Russia prior to 1917 and were brought here by Jewish immigrants. Many were composed and sung during labor strikes and rallies protesting the terrible conditions of sweatshops where so many, including children, were forced to work long hours at low pay." "Our Gusman Service on May 19th is not merely about Jewish art and collective memory -- it is a celebration of our people's long tradition of civic engagement and social concern. Please join us for this special musical event!"

A Day of Remembrance

Mon, May 29, 2017, Exhibit: 10am–5pm / Concert: 3pm
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
465 Huntington Ave
Boston, MA 02115

Please join us for a free concert at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s Memorial Day Open House in honor of the special exhibition; Memory Unearthed: The Lodz Ghetto Photographs of Henryk Ross*. These stunning photographs reveal the struggles and celebrations of everyday life in a community under incomprehensible circumstances. The exhibit both documents the Holocaust and stands as a tribute to perseverance and memory. JArts is proud to continue our collaboration with the MFA as, together, we present a special Memorial Day concert featuring Frank London. For more information about the exhibition, visit mfa.org or click the “reservations” button.

*Organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario, in association with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
