Since the 1980s, it's also become a crucial component of the klezmer and Yiddish music revival. Hankus Netsky explores the evolution of Hassidic music, from its inception in the late 1700s to today.

Two of the leading lights of the Yiddish music renaissance join forces in this program based on their recent joint album, Vilde Mekhaye (Wild Ecstasy). The soulful and inimitable vocalist Eleanor Reissa - known as the queen of Yiddish cabaret - and trumpeter-composer Frank London - the mystical high priest of New Wave avant-klez jazz - have been inspiring each other for more than a decade. Together with the great Klezmer Brass Allstars, they explore the world of Yiddish song, from the obscure to the chestnuts, from the sacred to the profane, fueled by the best brass band in the land.

I.L. Peretz was perhaps the most theatrically exciting playwright in all Yiddish literature, with astoundingly experimental plays that broke new ground in Yiddish drama and theater. In their experimentation with form, their early adoption of cutting-edge European modernist techniques, their enigmatic endings, and their sheer technical prowess, Peretz's plays were far ahead of their time. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his 1907 play Bay nakht afn altn mark (A Night in the Old Marketplace), a modernist panoramic chronicle of the modern Jewish experience and the culmination of his vision for the Yiddish stage. Debra Caplan explores the play and its production history, with reference to the evening's contemporary staging by Frank London.

This modern retelling of I.L. Peretz's 1907 play Bay nakht afn altn mark is a mad mash-up of psychedelic klezmer, Kurt Weill, and folk tunes from the Old Country gone electric. It tells the story of the badkhn, a traditional Jewish wedding jester, who over the course of one long night challenges God's authority by attempting to revive the dead and bring on the end of days. Conceived and directed by Alexandra Aron, with music composed by Frank London and lyrics and text by Glen Berger (Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), this multimedia concert features an all-star cast of singers and musicians, including London and his Klezmatics cofounder Lorin Sklamberg, with Yidstock Artistic Director Seth Rogovoy as special guest narrator.

Ezekiel's Wheels Klezmer Band brings passion, virtuosity, and contagious energy to every performance, with the intimacy of chamber music and the intensity of a rowdy dance band. The Wheels unique style was forged in the subway stations and farmers markets of Boston, where the informal setting and ever-changing audience created an ideal environment for musical experimentation. They honed their craft with bulgars and 1990s pop covers for the morning rush hour and mixed doinas and zhoks with fresh produce on the weekends, building a community of fans and friends across the city. We are excited to present this internationally renowned band in its Yidstock debut.

In this lively presentation followed by an even livelier Q&A and discussion Aaron Lansky, the Centers founder and president, shares bold new plans for the coming decade and beyond. Among the highlights are a Universal Yiddish Library and a far-reaching initiative to repatriate Jews with their own literature and culture.

Alicia will demonstrate the unique ornaments and playing techniques that distinguish klezmer fiddle-playing and give it a singular Jewish voice. She'll also talk about the challenges she faced when she almost singlehandedly revived the lost art of the klezmer fiddle in her work with the band she cofounded, the Klezmatics.

The history of the klezmer revival is in large part the story of Andy Statman, whose 1979 album Jewish Klezmer Music, recorded with Zev Feldman, literally announced the return of the forgotten music of the Old World shtetls to the outside world. Since then, Andy (who learned the sonorities of the music firsthand from immigrant-era musician Dave Tarras) has immersed himself in the music of the Hasidim. Whether he is playing mandolin or one of the clarinets that Tarras bequeathed to him, Andy performs a singular, contemporary fusion of Jewish, jazz, and Americana styles, a genre that this National Heritage fellow and Grammy nominee owns with his longtime musical partners, bassist Jim Whitney and drummer Larry Eagle.
