U.S. premiere! Hear acclaimed klezmer chamber music ensemble Klezmerata Fiorentina perform Zai Gezunt, Kalinindorf. Based on the reinterpretation of music from the southern frontier of Ukraine, the program is named for the shtetl Kalinindorf, a Jewish community destroyed by the Nazis. The work pays musical tribute, both joyful and sorrowful, to those lost lives. Varied and exciting, it is influenced by Balkan, gypsy, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Yiddish traditions, which coexisted over the centuries in vast territories along the shores of the Black Sea. The melodies are also derived from the family heritage of Klezmerata Fiorentina's founder, Igor Polesitsky.

The story of the opera revolves around conversations between the composer and librettist held from their respective living rooms in the Bay Area and Cleveland. Dan and Harvey, the two primary interlocutors, played by themselves, engage in discussions about music, the life of the artist as householder, finding time to work, the current state of the avant garde, and the opera itself.

In the Jewish ghettos of Poland and Lithuania during World War II, a world of dislocation, terror and death, cabaret music thrived. Jewish audiences gathered in makeshift clubs and theaters to hear newly-created Yiddish songs, rooted in Jewish folk and liturgical music as well as European operetta, American ragtime and Argentine tango.Jewish performers tuned these cosmopolitan songs in a local key: satirical and elegiac, political and personal, angry and heartsick.Together they created something rare, scarcely conceivable: art at the edge of the abyss.

Adrienne Cooper, one of the world's most acclaimed singers of Yiddish vocal music, and Zalmen Mlotek, a leading figure in Yiddish musical theater, here present ghetto songs collected during and after the war.

Aaron NovickThe BREW: Aaron Novik's Samuel Suite & Dirty Dan, Eval Dan

Saturday October 18, 8:00pm
$10 member, $15 general
JCC East Bay
1414 Walnut Street, Berkeley
Aaron Novik's ten-piece band presents an avant chamber-jazz rumination on the life of Novik's grandfather, who immigrated to America from a small village in WWI Poland. Samuel and Aaron passionately debated music-the grandfather particularly loved Bach's cantatas, a curious irony, that being a Jew, his favorite music was about Jesus. This religious oxymoron serves as the impetus for the sad and loving suite, in which Novik employs Jewish scales in the chorale style to create a sort of Jewish equivalent to Bach's Christian ones.

He uses different variations on the harmonic minor scale, the backbone of most klezmer and Jewish songs, with especially intriguing-and practically never used-scales starting on the second, third, sixth and seventh degrees.

To kick off the show, Dan Fries and Dan Cantrell of Dirty Dan, Eval Dan trek down another heretofore unexplored path for klezmer, combining the evocative rhythms and melodies of flamenco with traditional klezmer idioms. This fresh fusion melds beautifully, resulting in a crisp and irresistible sound hovering somewhere between Zaporozhye and Málaga.

Yiddishkayt is proud to participate in the annual commemoration of of Soviet Yiddish Writers. Fifty-six years ago, on August 12, 1952, the Soviet regime of Joseph Stalin executed fourteen prominent Yiddish writers and Jewish communal officials in an attempt to wipe out Jewish culture.

This year, we recognize Soviet Jewish composer S. Polonski, who contributed several well-known songs to the Yiddish repertoire. The Mit Gezang Yiddish Chorus of the Workmen's Circle will delve deeper into Polonski's musical legacy, performing the entirety of his songbook written for Yiddish-speaking schoolchildren in the Soviet Union, published in 1931. "Degenerate Music": Jewish Music of Weimar Germany
The Mendocino Music Festival
Thursday, July 17, 8:00 pm
Susan Waterfall & The Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Players
Erin Neff, vocalist

After World War I, Weimar Berlin was a cauldron of artistic ferment as avant-garde artists and intellectuals, most of them Jewish, struggled to create a modern German culture. Exuberant freedom and hectic experimentation masked a sense of impending doom. After 1933, Hitler denounced them all as "degenerate" and their forced exile carried Weimar modernity to the rest of the world. A re-creation of this fascinating and pivotal era with cabaret and chamber music of Weill, Schoenberg, and Eisler, photographs and film.

At the 1966 Berkeley Folk Festival, a young rabbi took the stage, humbly sandwiched between higher profile acts Pete Seeger and Jefferson Airplane. Armed with a guitar, he began to sing. Shlomo Carlebach was a brilliant young Talmudic scholar who had been sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe to bring the Torah to the hippies of San Francisco. But when his love for them transgressed the boundaries of halacha (Jewish Law), he was shunned by the Orthodox establishment. This documentary, screened at the 2007 Jerusalem Film Festival, features Carlebach's friends, doubters and followers as they discuss the counterculture rabbi's life and works. Though he passed away thirteen years ago, his influence is felt far and wide in eponymous minyanim around the world.

Heather Klein has charmed audiences throughout the United States, Canada and Europe with her beguiling stage presence and versatile soprano voice. Ms. Klein comes to the Jewish Music Festival hot off the release of her first album, Mayn Yiddishe Velt, a compilation of theater music from the late 1800's and early 1900's. In performance and on record, Heather celebrates the music brought to the New York's Lower East Side by immigrants as well as the innovative work written in the United States at that time for theater and concert halls including art songs, folk, and opera.

Heather will also appear at Temple Beth Sholom in San Leandro on March 14th at 8:00 pm and the San Francisco Public Library on March 12th at 6:00 pm.

Craig Ventresco, Meredith Axelrod, and Rob Reich fashion music utterly unconcerned with the modern era. Concentrating on early 20th century vaudeville, ragtime, and popular songs as recorded on obscure 78s from the dawn of the recorded music era, their sound travels backwards across time, pleasantly rumbling down the dirt roads of an America that once was.

Dream Kitchen presents a radical reevaluation of early Jazz, showing its roots in ragtime and folk music and its implications for improvisation. Compositions by Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington are thrashed, trashed and smashed by a tuba-guitar-drums trio of John Schott, Marc Bolin, and John Hanes. The trio, whose members have won countless accolades in pretty much every musical genre, will also indulge in an investigation of the works of early Jewish Jazz composers.

JEWMONGOUS "Taller Than Jesus" CD Release Tour
JEWMONGOUS, a solo comedy song concert with occasional guests, is the colicky, uncircumcised brain child of SEAN ALTMAN: the golden-voiced, song-writing wiz behind the pioneering comedy song act What I Like About Jew and the founder and former leader of the vocal group Rockapella. Sean was featured in Time Out New York's cover story "The New Super Jews," (with Jon Stewart and Sarah Silverman) and in the New York Times feature about "the Jewish Hipster Movement." He debuted JEWMONGOUS in 2006 and has garnered press accolades coast to coast (see them below).

Joining him are the blazing Fishtank Ensemble, now based in Los Angeles, and the Bay Area's own brilliant nerdie-commie-girl band Charming Hostess.

Community Yiddish Sing, Berkeley, CA, Nov 17, 2007

COMMUNITY CHORUS THROWS A HOOTENNANY!?? The East Bay Jewish Folk Chorus, now in its 6th year, is adding a new feature to its program: A Monthly Hootennany! (Otherwise known as "Kumzits" or a wild sing along party) The next one is slated for Saturday, November 17, at 8:00 p.m. at the the East Bay JCC, 1414 Walnut Street, in Berkeley. The group meets regularly on Thursday evenings at the JCC to sing a selection of songs in Hebrew, Yiddish, and Ladino. This season, a few gospel-style Jewish songs (also known as "Jospel") have been added. Led by musician Achi Ben Shalom, The chorus has performed at various events over the past several years, including the annual Zimriya at Temple Emanuel in San Francisco and the Jewish Music Festival in Berkeley. By hosting a monthly hootenanny, the chorus hopes to meet the needs of "closet singers," those who enjoy singing but are not able make a weekly commitment to practice.
