Charming Hostess makes lovely noise about complex ideas is at the intersection of voice, text and diaspora consciousness. Their music is based on the sounding body: voices and winds, handclaps and heartbeats, sex-breath and silence. They are known for their whirl of eerie harmony, hot rhythm, and radical smarts. This holiday show will feature winter songs of darkness, joy and mystery. Charming Hostess is also presenting music from their installation, The Bowls Project (Tzadik, 2010). Based on inscriptions from Babylonian Jewish amulets known as "demon bowls," The Bowls Project sings of sex, ritual and secrets of the home. File under: APOCALYPTIC-INTIMATE

Zoyres Eastern European Wild Ferment performs original and Eastern European traditional music (klezmer, Balkan, etc.), approaching these from both a “traditional” and stretched out /experimental framework. The name "Zoyres" derives from the Yiddish term for fermented vegetables, "zoyers." These foods have been transformed by culture and community (of the microbial sort) through incredible biochemical fermentation processes. These "cultural" transformations underlie our own cultural development, as humans have relied and reveled in fermented foods for millennia. Zoyres' music represents the geo-social analogue to the biochemical ferment. Our music, of Eastern European origin, brined in the contemporary cultural milieu, is akin to the pickle, still evident in its cucumbral origin, but with a taste and texture transformed.

Advance tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com

The internationally-acclaimed and Bay Area based Red Hot Chachkas infuse the klezmer tradition of Eastern European Yiddish music with jazz, rock, oldtime, classical, and latin influences. Their hot sound and uptempo beat has folks up dancing. Bandleader and classical violinist Julie Egger is joined by seasoned musicians from disparate backgrounds: soulful Barbara Speed (clarinet), balkanized Diana Strong (accordion), bluegrass Tony Phillips (mandolin), jazzy Breck Diebel (bass), and rockin' Michael Arrow (drums).

Cradle Duende presents a combination of klezmer and flamenco, 'klezmenco,' with an infusion of reggae and cumbia dance rhythms. Cradle Duende takes its name from the Spanish word 'duende,' in reference to a musically heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity; and a merging of disparate musical traditions that each evolved from independent cradles of civilization. Cradle Duende brings the strength of deep cultural roots into the party atmosphere.

Monajat is inspired by Selihot, the poetic prayers of forgiveness recited during the month preceding the Jewish High Holidays according to Middle Eastern tradition. The first-time U.S. presentation of Monajat combines participatory workshops, talks, prayer services, and other educational programs to enhance the spiritual and cultural experience. Dardashti, a performer and anthropologist of Iranian descent, re-imagines the Selihot ritual in collaboration with an acclaimed ensemble of Jewish and Muslim musicians, an electronic soundscape, and dynamic video projections by video artist and designer Dmitry Kmelnitsky.

Dardashti’s acclaimed ensemble of musicians includes Omer Avital (oud, bass, vocals), Amir ElSaffar (santour, vocals), Tal Ronen (bass, vocals) and Dafer Tawil (percussion, violin, ney, oud, vocals).

Galeet DardashtiThe Foundation for Jewish Culture and its league of performing arts presenters have commissioned Monajat (Fervent Prayer), a multimedia concert by composer, singer, and scholar Galeet Dardashti which will tour the United States in September 2011. Girls in Trouble is an art-folk song cycle about the women of the Old Testament created by Brooklyn-based violinist, singer, and writer Alicia Jo Rabins. Drawing from two years spent studying holy texts in Jerusalem and playing in rock clubs at night, Girls in Trouble combines mysticism, poetry, and ancient women's tales to weave improbably beautiful songs about androgyny, knives & leprosy. This performance celebrates the release of Girls in Trouble's 2nd album, 'Half You Half Me.'

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn has been at the heart of the vibrant Northwest independent and alternative music scene ever since releasing her debut album 'You Think It's Like This But Really It's Like This' in 2001. Her music is characterized by an evocative mix of striking lyrical poise and unabashed emotional honesty. Her
performance at the Subterranean Arthouse is a bit of a secret, but we're letting you in on it. Shhhhhhhhh.

Real Vocal String Quartet was formed in 2003 by premier San Francisco violinist/composer Irene Sazer. Since then, the quartet has performed to sold out audiences around the Bay Area. The group is thrilled to announce the release this February of their first studio album. RVSQ's influences range from traditional American string band music to contemporary improvisation, from Brazilian folk rhythms to hypnotic meditations from West Africa. Through it all, the threads of spine-tingling vocal and instrumental harmony and fearless, inspired improvisation weave a web of original acoustic music played with a deep groove.

A klezmer show as part of Black History Month: what's up with that? Let Don Byron and his powerful band show you tonight, as they illuminate one of the many fruitful musical collaborations between the African American and Jewish communities--and knock your socks off into the bargain! (For further examples of such collaborations, look no further than the jazz of Benny Goodman and Johnny Mathis' famed rendition of "Kol Nidre.") This show is dedicated to the music of the late great Mickey Katz, clarinetist, Yiddish humorist, klezmer bandleader, and musical director for Spike Jones. Featuring tunes like "Haim Afen Range" ("Home on the Range") and "Seder Dance" (an amazing adaptation of Khachaturian's "Saber Dance"), the performance explores the full range of Mickey's virtuosity and wacky humor.

KugelplexLet's Go Dance@Jessie Series
A Klezmer Wedding Celebration with Kugelplex
Thursday, June 3, 6:00pm-7:30pm, Free
Jessie Square (Mission between 3rd and 4th Streets, San Francisco)

With Kugelplex, the Bay Area's most rockin' purveyor of old world Klezmer, join the wedding procession of Sharon and Amber into a madcap whirl of clapping, stomping and easy to follow dances led by Klezmer dance maven, Bruce Bierman. Enjoy the vocals of celebrated recording artist, Jewlia Eisenberg, and the comic antics of David Rosenfeld-as we celebrate love in a circle of dancing community.

Kugelplex will be celebrating marriage equality for all with a blowout dance party featuring our dear friends, Sharon and Amber, recently married when it was legal, and now very active in the fight for marriage equality. They are both wonderful spokespeople for legalizing same sex marriage. Unable to dance for their wedding ceremony at the time and because klezmer music and dance have their deepest roots in the Jewish wedding celebration, this will be the party we had always wanted to give them.

Let's Go Dance@Jessie is a free monthly open-air dance party in Jessie Square in front of the Contemporary Jewish Museum and next to St. Patrick's Church in downtown San Francisco on the First Thursday of each month from May to October from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The series offers dance lessons and music from today's best Bay Area artists.

U.S. premiere! Hear acclaimed klezmer chamber music ensemble Klezmerata Fiorentina perform Zai Gezunt, Kalinindorf. Based on the reinterpretation of music from the southern frontier of Ukraine, the program is named for the shtetl Kalinindorf, a Jewish community destroyed by the Nazis. The work pays musical tribute, both joyful and sorrowful, to those lost lives. Varied and exciting, it is influenced by Balkan, gypsy, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Yiddish traditions, which coexisted over the centuries in vast territories along the shores of the Black Sea. The melodies are also derived from the family heritage of Klezmerata Fiorentina's founder, Igor Polesitsky.

The story of the opera revolves around conversations between the composer and librettist held from their respective living rooms in the Bay Area and Cleveland. In the Jewish ghettos of Poland and Lithuania during World War II, a world of dislocation, terror and death, cabaret music thrived. Jewish audiences gathered in makeshift clubs and theaters to hear newly-created Yiddish songs, rooted in Jewish folk and liturgical music as well as European operetta, American ragtime and Argentine tango.Jewish performers tuned these cosmopolitan songs in a local key: satirical and elegiac, political and personal, angry and heartsick.Together they created something rare, scarcely conceivable: art at the edge of the abyss.

Adrienne Cooper, one of the world's most acclaimed singers of Yiddish vocal music, and Zalmen Mlotek, a leading figure in Yiddish musical theater, here present ghetto songs collected during and after the war.

Francesco Spagnolo will talk about daily and synagogue life, literature, music, and visual culture inside and outside the Italian ghettos.

Aaron NovickThe BREW: Aaron Novik's Samuel Suite & Dirty Dan, Eval Dan

Saturday October 18, 8:00pm
$10 member, $15 general
JCC East Bay
1414 Walnut Street, Berkeley
Aaron Novik's ten-piece band presents an avant chamber-jazz rumination on the life of Novik's grandfather, who immigrated to America from a small village in WWI Poland. Samuel and Aaron passionately debated music-the grandfather particularly loved Bach's cantatas, a curious irony, that being a Jew, his favorite music was about Jesus. This religious oxymoron serves as the impetus for the sad and loving suite, in which Novik employs Jewish scales in the chorale style to create a sort of Jewish equivalent to Bach's Christian ones.

He uses different variations on the harmonic minor scale, the backbone of most klezmer and Jewish songs, with especially intriguing-and practically never used-scales starting on the second, third, sixth and seventh degrees.

To kick off the show, Dan Fries and Dan Cantrell of Dirty Dan, Eval Dan trek down another heretofore unexplored path for klezmer, combining the evocative rhythms and melodies of flamenco with traditional klezmer idioms. This fresh fusion melds beautifully, resulting in a crisp and irresistible sound hovering somewhere between Zaporozhye and Málaga.

Co-presented by the Jewish Music Festival, Berkeley Hillel, Polish Arts and Culture Foundation and the Jazzschool
