Arab-Jewish Peace Concert

Sunday September 28th, 2003
9:00pm
Musical Director: Yoel Ben-Simhon

Join us for the Second Annual Arab-Jewish Peace Concert, featuring Jewish and Arab musicians committed to promoting peace and co-existence within and between our communities. The concert features performers of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian background from Morocco, Senegal, Israel, Egypt, Argentina, Lebanon, and the United States. In contrast to the violence of the past year, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the American war in Iraq, Storahtelling brings together a diverse community in a non-political setting, to invoke unity, acceptance, and the prevailing art forms of peace.

Performers include: Frank London (The Klezmatics), Basya Schechter (Pharoah’s Daughter), Raquy Danziger, Yoel Ben-Simhon, Mor Dior Bamba, Rashid Halihal, George Mordechai, Hicham Chami, Emmanuel Mann, Sarah Oroeste, Rami El-Aasser, Osama Veadan, Osama Faruk, Tomer Tzur, Brian Gelfand, Dorit Konig, and others.

All tickets: $12 at the door At the Actors Temple, 339 West 47th St. (btw 8/9), NYC, NY

This is the first in a series of two peace concerts in 2003-2004 season that will facilitate dialogue, understanding, and peace between the Arab and Jewish communities through music and tradition.

The Israeli-born Moshav Band grew up on Moshav Meor Modi'im, a musical village located in the hills between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Moshav, primarily composed of brothers Yehuda (vocals, percussion), Meir (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Yosef (bass) Solomon, and David (vocals, guitar) comes on like a family of traveling minstrels, court jesters, and the old-age mystics all at once. Their music is rich with fiery rock/folk/reggae songs, spiced with the flavors of the Middle East. The boys draw you into their own struggles, and leave you pondering your own, but not before they provide you with a huge helping of hope.

At the 1966 Berkeley Folk Festival, a young rabbi took the stage, humbly sandwiched between higher profile acts Pete Seeger and Jefferson Airplane. Armed with a guitar, he began to sing. Shlomo Carlebach was a brilliant young Talmudic scholar who had been sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe to bring the Torah to the hippies of San Francisco. But when his love for them transgressed the boundaries of halacha (Jewish Law), he was shunned by the Orthodox establishment. This documentary, screened at the 2007 Jerusalem Film Festival, features Carlebach's friends, doubters and followers as they discuss the counterculture rabbi's life and works. Though he passed away thirteen years ago, his influence is felt far and wide in eponymous minyanim around the world.

Soulfarm was founded in Israel by Grammy Award winner lead guitarist C Lanzbom and guitarist and lead singer Noah Solomon Chase.

Their uncomparable sound has been dubbed as New American music, full melodic song writing and progressive modern arrangements. Their live shows are full of Mediterranean flavor with captivating guitar leads, Carlebach melodies, dance rhythms and strong percussion breaks.

Soulfarm has a wide range of influences from rock and Latin, to Hebrew and Celtic folk music. Soulfarm has recorded with many well-known musicians such as Perry Farrel and Dispatch; and has opened for Bruce Hornsby, Shawn Colvin and The Wailers George Clinton.

They regularly sell out national venues, such as Whiskey-A-Go-Go, L.A., BB Kings Blues Club, NYC, Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC, The Knitting Factory, L.A., NYC, Fox Theater, Boulder, CO, and Firehouse – St. Louis, MO. Through extensive tours of the U.S. and Europe, the group has gained great popularity.

This retreat will provide an experiential spiritual exploration into the inner workings of devotional ecstatic Hasidic-Hebrew music and dance, and the Sufi practices of moving prayer-mediation ritual. We will explore how one transcends the limits of reality, reaching toward the non-dual state, using music and movement in these mystical practices. This will include the historic foundations as well as the growing body of music and variety of ways in which these two traditions create a devotional trance. Participants will discover how sacred sound facilitates in transcending mind-chatter, tuning into the heart for a deeper experience of Oneness and inner peace. Yuval will bring his gifts of live music to this work.
