NEW KLEZMER MUSIC and IT ROCK’S !!!

YOM, NEW KING OF KLEZMER CLARINET
autoproclamé "King of Klezmer Clarinet"; Naftule Brandwein.

Hankus Netsky Presents The Music of Morris Hollender
On Sunday, April 5th at 4PM Temple Beth Israel of Waltham will sponsor a concert featuring nigunim, klezmer tunes, cantorials, and Yiddish folk songs from the repertoire of Morris Hollender, the temple’s long-time baal t’file (lay cantor) and baal korey (Torah reader). The concert, organized by local musician, ethnomusicologist, and Temple member Hankus Netsky, will feature prominent local singers and the twenty-piece New England Conservatory Jewish Music Ensemble.
Originally from Carpato-Ruthenia, Morris Hollender’s father, uncle, and brothers were all renowned for their singing and their knowledge of nigunim (melodies) from local and legendary Hassidic rabbis and traditional cantors. A survivor of Auschwitz and a former resident of postwar Czechoslovakia, Mr. Hollender emigrated to America with his wife, Edith (also a survivor) in 1968. The April 5th concert is the result of Hankus Netsky’s ongoing work with the Mr. Hollender through the National Yiddish Book Center’s “Discovery Project,” an activist Jewish cultural recovery project that he directs. “It is extraordinary to have the opportunity to bring this precious Jewish musical legacy back to life, and to be able to pass these treasures on our students and to the general public,” says Netsky.
Temple Beth Israel is located at 25 Harvard St.
in Waltham, one block from Main St. on the 70 bus line. Tickets are $10 (a special $5 rate is available for Beth Israel members). The synagogue is fully handicapped accessible. For more information call 781 894 5146, or contact the temple at www.tbiwaltham.org. Group discounts are also available.

The Other Seder Songs
Thursday 26th March, 7:30pm
Los Desterrados, Oi Va Voi and the Yiddish Twist Orchestra will rock out the JCC's Other Seder. For the third consecutive year, we present our unique take on the Seder, as each band performs a song inspired by the after-dinner songs as the launching point for their set.
Cualos son los uno
Six-piece Los Desterrados, who released their third album, Miradores at the end of 2008, bring their mix of ladino, flamenco, Moorish and Gypsy flavours to the Seder.
"Los Des take the Medieval music of the Sephardic Jews, with its strong Latin influences, and drag it effortlessly into the 21st Century with lashings of Spanish folk and Balkan Soul to deliver a series of rousing, melancholic songs that pulse with rhythm and feeling" (London Metro)
Adir Hu
London's superfly klezmer / punk / gypsy outfit Oi Va Voi give us a sneak preview of their forthcoming third album, Traveling the Face of the Globe.

The JCC's own creation, the fabulous Yiddish Twist Orchestra, will set the dance floor swinging with their hard-dancing, pulp fiction style 50s and 60s Yiddish surf twist!

“KLEZMERQUERQUE” Albuquerque New Mexico’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival celebrates its seventh year February 12-15, 2009 (Presidents Day weekend).
On Saturday morning, February 14th from 9:30am-11:00am the Strauss Warschauer Duo will lead “SHABBOS, MUSIC AND YIDDISH”, a hands-on workshop of Hassidic Niggunim (melodies) and Yiddish Sabbath songs for singers and instrumentalists. No previous experience necessary. All ages, levels and backgrounds welcome. Brin Ingber will teach dances from the Eastern European Jewish wedding repertoire including Rebbe Elimelech tanz and Kayzad merakdim. Classes cost $20-general and $16 for seniors, students and fixed income. From noon-2pm there will be a catered lunch. After the catered luncheon Brin Ingber will present "Why Jews Aren't Just People of the Book" with rare and historic dance illustrations and music for Jewish dance in far flung communities through the ages. Following her powerpoint presentation there will be time for questions. The price for the ‘Lunch ‘n Presentation’ is an $8-$15 suggested donation.
On Saturday afternoon from 2:15pm-3:45pm the Duo will lead “MAKING YOUR INSTRUMENT SING IN YIDDISH”, a hands-on workshop for everyone. Again, all are welcome. Price for this class is $20-general admission and $16 for seniors, students and fixed income.
On Saturday evening at 7pm Brin Ingber will perform two dances. “The Argument” gives a modern twist to the classic story of Abraham about to sacrifice his son Isaac. The dance will be accompanied by the chanting of Brin Ingber’s sister Rabbi Deborah Brin, who is also the Rabbi of Congregation Nahalat Shalom. “Roles Not Taken” a dance combining music theatre, ballet and Israeli folk dance presents a surprising view on issues of Jewish identity. The evening culminates with a concert by the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, “Dem Fideles Neshome” (The Fiddle’s Soul) and a dance party. Brin Ingber will also lead dances that she taught in her morning class. Price for this event is $18-in advance and $20-general, $18-seniors and students at the door.
The 20-piece intergenerational Nahalat Shalom Community Klezmer band will be celebrating the release of its first full length CD recorded and engineered by New Mexico’s own Manny Rettinger of Ubik sound and the sound engineer for UNM’s music department. The Rebbe’s Orkestra ( www.isound.com/mp3s/rebbes_orkestra_klezmer_and_judaic_band ) , the popular Albuquerque-based klezmer and Judaic ensemble will also perform on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Horowitz-Segelstein Duo at Scranton Library, 801 Post Rd., in Madison, CT. Cookie
Segelstein and Josh Horowitz, both accomplished and celebrated local
musicians, carry on the ancient tradition of klezmer in an unbound,
energetic village style playing Jewish instrumental music of historical
Eastern Europe. These two musicians represent a new generation of players of
Klezmer music which reaches back at least 125 years in time to Eastern
European Jews and traditional folk music using familiar and possibly
unfamiliar instruments—the tsimbl, a 19th century Button Accordion and a
violin. Program is free and open to the public of all ages. Light
refreshments will be served. Handicapped accessible. For directions to
Scranton Library or to RSVP, please call (203) 245-7365.
Every Sunday Morning, combining live music and food in a fresh, cultural environment, City Winery’s Klezmer brunch series pairs some of the greatest musicians in the world with delicious lox, bagels and other tasty fare on Sunday mornings from 11am to 2pm. City Winery's debut brunch event is January 11, 2009 features Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys.
