The Forward and Sixth Street Synagogue Present:
Jewish Art for the New Millennium: 3 Alicias 3
Evening of Music and Poetry with Alicia Svigals, Alicia Ostriker, and Alicia Jo Rabins
Curated by Jake Marmer and Dan Friedman
Tuesday Aug 24th @ 7.00pm
325 East Sixth Street (b/n 1st and 2nd avenue)
$8 cover
The evening will feature these acclaimed artists who represent eclectic genres, mediums and generations. Each will perform a set, then all three will come together in a collaborative work, and finally, a panel discussion will follow.
Alicia Svigals, violinist/composer, a founder of the Klezmatics and of the all-women band Mikveh, is considered by many to be the world’s foremost klezmer fiddler. During the past decade, she almost singlehandedly revived klezmer fiddle playing, which came close to extinction in this century; traditional klezmer violin style is now being played again by hundreds of her students, including most of today’s best professional players. She taught and toured with violinist Itzhak Perlman, who recorded her compositions as duets with Ms. Svigals accompanied by the Klezmatics. She is a past winner of the first prize at the Safed Klezmer Festival. “She is without question the greatest living exponent of the klezmer fiddle…” - Seth Rogovoy, author of The Essential Klezmer. See www.aliciasvigals.com.
Alicia Ostriker is a major American poet and critic. Twice nominated for a National Book Award, she is author of twelve volumes of poetry, most recently “The Book of Seventy” (2009), which won the Jewish Book Award for Poetry. As a critic Ostriker is the author of two path-breaking volumes on women’s poetry, “Writing Like a Woman and Stealing the Language: The Emergence of Women’s Poetry in America.” Ostriker has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Society of America, the San Francisco State Poetry Center, the Judah Magnes Museum, the New Jersey Arts Council, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation. She is Professor Emerita of Rutgers University and is a faculty member of the New England College Low-Residency Poetry MFA Program. Ostriker has taught in the Princeton University Creative Writing Program and in Toni Morrison’s Atelier Program. She has taught midrash writing workshops in the USA, Israel, England and Australia. See www.rci.rutgers.edu.
Alicia Jo Rabins is a fiddler, singer, songwriter, and poet living in Brooklyn, NY. She has toured Central America as a cultural ambassador for the United States. A regular fiddler with Golem, her own band, Girls in Trouble, plays art-pop songs about women in the Torah. “An entrancing one-woman string quartet” — The Forward. Check out Alicia’s Girls in Trouble Project here: www2.myspace.com/girlsintroublemusic.

Introduction to klezmer music, Yiddish song & Yidishkayt : July 16-19
Faculty: Georg Brinkman, Roswitha Dasch, Monika Feil, Dorothea Greve, Franka Lampe, Katharina Müther.
For many of us, our first contact and fascination with anything Yiddish happened in a concert of klezmer music or Yiddish song, or possibly at a Yiddish dance event. But these forms of cultural expression - song, instrumental music, dance... more

Yiddish dance/dance music/dance song for everyone : July 16-19
Workshop design: Andreas Schmitges; Dance faculty: Steven Weintraub, Andreas Schmitges; Music faculty: Alan Bern, Christian Dawid, Sanne Möricke; Dance song faculty: Efim Chorny, Susan Ghergus, Andreas Schmitges + artists-in-residence.
Over the last years we have witnessed the worldwide development of a very lively new Yiddish dance culture. New sources are constantly being found in many different places. more
One of the most special New England events occurs not during the Fall leaf-gawking season, but in mid-July—starting today, in fact—when the National Yiddish Book Center opens its annual "Paper Bridge" festival, a week-long celebration of Yiddishkeit with lectures, workshops, film screenings, and of course, Jewish music new and old.
This year features two special exhibits, Mayer Kirshenblatt's paintings in a traveling exhibit titled: "They Call Me Mayer July" (so what more appropriate month!??). I am a major fan of the exhibit, and of his pictures, which capture life in pre-Holocaust Poland in a way that is both sweet and yet eschews the shmalzification of the period. Kirshenblatt's exhibit is balanced by a look at "Esn! Jews and Food in America. It's a hard combo to beat. [Off-topic, I note that the Jewish Women's Archive, where I work, has recently begun featuring regular guest blogs—is that an oxymoron?—on food and new kosher recipes. Yummy!
The festival finale, and another absolutely-must-see evening is the East Coast premiere of Veretski Pass's new piece, The Klezmer Shul. "Inspired by the synagogues of pre-war Eastern Europe, The Klezmer Shul is rooted in Jewish liturgical melodic principles and emotionals intonations. This four-movement instrumental suite transmits the emotional power of synagogue singing without the use of words, incorporating elements of jazz, avant-garde, classical, klezmer, and folk music."

What matters most to KlezmerShack readers, of course, is that there will be music. Amazing music. New music. Tonight its Hankus Netsky's new ensemble, Branches, "… that uses Jewish musical tradition as a point of departure for creative exploration, performing repertoire drawn from klezmer, Yiddish theater, and cantorial traditions, along with new compositions and improvisations based on Yiddish poetry and other sources."

Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre for Performing Arts
273 Bloor St West, Toronto
Beyond the Pale will perform for the first time at Toronto's beautiful new downtown concert space Koerner Hall, as special guests with the Toronto Children's Chorus. The concert will feature the TCC in a program entitled "Around the World in 80 Minutes," a musical journey from Canada and the United States, to Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and New Zealand. Featured composers include Srul Irving Glick, Allister MacGillivray, Paul Halley, Morten Lauridsen, Krzysztof Penderecki, Richard Oswin ... and BTP's own Martin van de Ven. Martin was commissioned to create a new piece for BTP with the TCC. The composition "Being Margolia," is based on the life of Manya Lipshitz, who grew up in a children's commune in 1920's Russia before moving to Canada, where she became a Yiddish teacher and an early member of the leftist Jewish community of Camp Naivelt. Still functioning today, Camp Naivelt's current corps of children engaged in an extended study of Manya's life 2 summers ago, connecting her social justice values and distinctly Yiddish worldview to their own 21st century lives. Martin's involvement in the original project led to the new composition, whose text was created by Ruth Howard of Jumblies Theatre.
BTP will also perform a short set of some of its own tunes within the concert.
Klezwoods, an exciting Boston-based klezmer band, perform an energetic mix of klezmer, balkan, and arabic music with bass heavy grooves and eclectic instrumentation.

Let's Go Dance@Jessie Series
A Klezmer Wedding Celebration with Kugelplex
Thursday, June 3, 6:00pm-7:30pm, Free
Jessie Square (Mission between 3rd and 4th Streets, San Francisco)
With Kugelplex, the Bay Area's most rockin' purveyor of old world Klezmer, join the wedding procession of Sharon and Amber into a madcap whirl of clapping, stomping and easy to follow dances led by Klezmer dance maven, Bruce Bierman. Enjoy the vocals of celebrated recording artist, Jewlia Eisenberg, and the comic antics of David Rosenfeld-as we celebrate love in a circle of dancing community.
Kugelplex will be celebrating marriage equality for all with a blowout dance party featuring our dear friends, Sharon and Amber, recently married when it was legal, and now very active in the fight for marriage equality. They are both wonderful spokespeople for legalizing same sex marriage. Unable to dance for their wedding ceremony at the time and because klezmer music and dance have their deepest roots in the Jewish wedding celebration, this will be the party we had always wanted to give them.
Let's Go Dance@Jessie is a free monthly open-air dance party in Jessie Square in front of the Contemporary Jewish Museum and next to St. Patrick's Church in downtown San Francisco on the First Thursday of each month from May to October from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The series offers dance lessons and music from today's best Bay Area artists.

The group's music excites, inspires, and romances the listener, while always drawing from the musicians' roots in the traditions of Jewish, Jazz, Eastern European and Middle Eastern music.

With a diverse and accomplished lineup of Philly musicians, West Philadelphia Orchestra is an unusual and exciting ensemble in today's musical world. They began playing music from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and the klezmer traditions in late 2006, and have continued expanding and refining their sound and repertoire ever since. The band now plays original material that explores and experiments with traditional sounds, which can be heard on their 2008 release 'WPO.' As much a community as a band, WPO's performances are celebratory events. With their pounding drums and shimmering brass sounds, they inspire audiences to hold hands, dance, and sing along. Joined by trumpeter and vocalist Susan Watts, the West Philadelphia (Klezmer) Orchestra - a 6 piece ensemble with clarinetist Larry Goldfinger, trombonist Dan Blacksberg, pianist Adrian Banner, sousaphonist Jim Parker, and Gregg Mervine on drums - will play klezmer and Yiddish songs.

Ukrainian and East European Jewish Traditions
Friday, February 12th, 7pm
The Ukrainian Museum
222 East 6th Street, NYC
(between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
"Night Songs from a Neighboring Village" brings together two musical traditions that have existed side by side in Ukraine for centuries, influencing each other profoundly. Join us for an evening of East European Jewish and Ukrainian music and song, presented comparatively by two of the finest performers in both traditions: internationally acclaimed Yiddish singer and klezmer multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Alpert and internationally renowned singer/composer/master of the Ukrainian bandura, Julian Kytasty.
The program draws from the rich legacy of Ukrainian folk and liturgical song, the virtuosic art of the bandura (Ukrainian harp-lute), klezmer music, Yiddish folksong, and the music of the Hasidim. A first version of "Night Songs" was created to accompany the "Tracing An-sky" exhibition at New York's Jewish Museum. Since 1993, Alpert and Kytasty have performed the program internationally as a duo, in the company of other musicians, and in an ensemble version with Brave Old World and Paris-to-Kyiv.
Admission $15 for adults, with discounts for seniors/members.
For reservations call 212-228-0110. Reception to follow.
