Margot Leverett is one of the foremost clarinetists of the klezmer revival. Classically trained at Indiana University School of Music, she was involved in avant-garde music when she first heard klezmer, the dynamic East European music traditionally played at Jewish weddings. Leverett was a founding member of the Klezmatics in 1985 before moving on to establish a solo career. Her first CD, "The Art of Klezmer Clarinet," a tribute to classic klezmer of the 20's and 30's, was released in 2001 on Traditional Crossroads (CD4296) to glowing reviews. Her “Klezmer Mountain Boys” band has delighted audiences around the world. Margot will play in a classic klezmer trio format with Patrick Farrell on accordion and Aaron Alexander on drums.

Workmen's Circle Klezmer Jam, Brookline, MA, 12 Feb 2012

Well, it happens, the Patriots get to the Super Bowl and then the klezmorim get invited to participate. Rumor has it that Loren Sklamberg will sing the National Anthem and that the Yeshiva University Marching Band will perform at halftime. Even if that doesn't really happen, the Hub-Klez will be likely glued to their TVs.

So, the February jam will be Feb 12 Sunday 7-9 pm at the Workmen's Circle.
1762 Beacon St. Brookline.

Pianists should bring keyboards. Music is available for purchase.

Dave Levitt learned the music business from his parents. They got him started at age eight in Hollywood, Florida. He went on to appear with his folks at every one of their performances. First it was drums and clarinet. Later it became alto sax before Dave finally settled with the trombone at age fourteen. As a teenager Dave attended the famous Laguardia H.S. of Music and Art in New York. While a student there, he was a cast member in the Elizabeth Swados production "Swing" which had a run at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. After completing High School, Dave attended Manhattan School Of Music on a scholarship. As student at MSM, Levitt had the good fortune of appearing with many notable jazz musicians. They included Red Rodney, Al Grey, Clark Terry as well as many others. It was about this time that Dave started to arrange and record Klezmer music with his father. These recordings also included their distant cousin Howie Leess on alto saxophone. After finishing his education, Dave took his artistry on the road which included the U.S. as well as Europe. Two of his European tours were with the Epstein Brothers Klezmer Band. Dave was the youngest member of the group as the brothers were well into their 70's. The eldest brother Max Epstein was in his early 80's. It was about this time that Dave started his own company called Progressive Music. The business operated as a rehearsal/recording studio for thirteen years. The business has since shifted gears and Dave is now involved in publishing as well as operating as a record label. The initial release of the label is called "Marty Levitt's Greatest Hits". It's a series of recordings with two generations in the ensemble. (Marty and Dave Levitt).

The Arkestra consists of some of the most innovative artists on the scene today – Pam Fleming, Paul Shapiro, Aaron Alexander, Fima Ephron, Eyal Maoz, and many others. January 26th

We are returning to one of our favorite venues, Johnny D's Uptown (Davis Sq., Somerville) for a show that will surely be remembered. We always love to play at this classic Somerville spot and are continuing the tradition of providing stellar and entertaining opening bands for the show. Last Spring we brought the Underscore Orkestra gypsy band from Oregon, this fall we had the Elephant Wrecking Ball, and this time around we are getting the Trubaci Balkan Brass Band! They will start the show off with a blast of brass that will surely get the party started right! They mix traditional eastern european flavors with intense improvisation and tight rhythms and harmonies. Trumpets, saxophones, trombones, tubas and drums will be blowing the roof off. Following Trubaci, Klezwoods will be rocking the house with our usual Klezmer/Eastern European blend of hard grooves, improvisation and melodies.

This is a particularly special show for us, as we will be hitting the studio the very next day to record our next full length album! We will be travelling up to Syracuse, N.Y. for a weekend of recording at More Sound Studios. We are very excited to get rolling on this one, as it will feature a lot of new and original material as well as some classic repertoire that will make for an interesting and fun album to listen to.

So come out and see us off with a night of great music, food, drinks and company! We hope to see you out this Thursday night!

Elaine Hoffman Watts and Susan Watts, Philadelphia, PA, 11 December 2011

Klezmer Concert: The Philadelphia Folklore Project presents award-winning drummer Elaine Hoffman Watts and her daughter, acclaimed vocalist and trumpeter Susan Lankin Watts in an evening of klezmer music devoted to saying good riddance to all the mishegas (Yiddish for "€œcraziness"€ or "€œinsanity"€) in our world today. Klezmer is the celebratory music of Eastern European Jews. "€œGoodnight Mishegas"€ is a line in the Hoffman family's Goodnight Waltz, composed close to a century ago, with words recently penned by Susan. The Folklore Project invites people to sing along at the concert and, in celebration of family and community traditions, to reflect on possibilities for turning our woes into joy. Klezmer Conquest: A Battle of the Bands, Needham, MA, 11 December 2011

KLEZMER CONQUEST: A Battle of The Bands

Temple Aliyah

1664 Central Ave-Needham, MA
December 11th at 7 PM
$ 5 ticket

Join our special guest MCs, our Natick neighbors, Cantor Ken Richmond and Rabbi Shira Shazeer for an entertaining evening of Klezmer as four local bands hit the Aliyah bandstand. Having performed klezmer and Yiddish songs up and down the East Coast, in Israel, and in Eastern Europe, Ken and Shira will keep the program moving with their musical taklents, Yiddishkeit, and humor..

Our four Klezmer Kontenders are:

Klezjam who have playing together for nearly 3 years. We play at nursing homes, assisted living centers, and an occasional bar mitzvah and wedding. The band got its name from the fact that we met playing at two regular jams -- the Workmen's Circle jam and the Watertown.jam.

JCC Klezmer ensemble is a class of The JCC in Newton lead by Barry Shapiro. Barry has been along-time member of the Boston music scene and was a founding member of The Klezmer Conservatory Band, Shirim, and the B.S.O. (Barry Shapiro Orchestra).

Shir Madness plays a mix of Yiddish show tunes, folk tunes and hits from the Borscht Belt. The band plays all of the distinctive dances and styles -- bulgars, Terkishes, freylakhs, horas, shers, hongas, waltzes and marches -- all of them popular in Eastern Europe and in the U.S. in the early part of the twentieth century. The band especially loves the wild and swinging music from the golden age of the great bandleaders -- people like Dave Tarras, Abe Schwartz, German Goldenshteyn, Harry Kandel, and Naftule Brandwein. We also play original pieces written by our clarinet player, Richard Yospin.

The Shpilkes Klezmer Band has become a mainstay of the Purim celebrations and congregational events at various synagogues in MetroWest. The name "Shpilkes" ..(שפּילקעס).. is a Yiddish word for "nervous energy". The word is also sufficiently like the Yiddish term "shpil", meaning play, that it can help to think of it as "playing instead of sitting still". That's where Shpilkes Klezmer Band is at, hyperactive, ready to play and certainly not to sit still. No one can listen to Klezmer by Shpilkes without wanting to dance to its lively, living melodies and relating to the instrumental voices that sing of the human experience.

Charming Hostess makes lovely noise about complex ideas is at the intersection of voice, text and diaspora consciousness. Their music is based on the sounding body: voices and winds, handclaps and heartbeats, sex-breath and silence. They are known for their whirl of eerie harmony, hot rhythm, and radical smarts. This holiday show will feature winter songs of darkness, joy and mystery. Charming Hostess is also presenting music from their installation, The Bowls Project (Tzadik, 2010). Based on inscriptions from Babylonian Jewish amulets known as "demon bowls," The Bowls Project sings of sex, ritual and secrets of the home. File under: APOCALYPTIC-INTIMATE

Zoyres Eastern European Wild Ferment performs original and Eastern European traditional music (klezmer, Balkan, etc.), approaching these from both a “traditional” and stretched out /experimental framework. The name "Zoyres" derives from the Yiddish term for fermented vegetables, "zoyers." These foods have been transformed by culture and community (of the microbial sort) through incredible biochemical fermentation processes. These "cultural" transformations underlie our own cultural development, as humans have relied and reveled in fermented foods for millennia. Zoyres' music represents the geo-social analogue to the biochemical ferment. Our music, of Eastern European origin, brined in the contemporary cultural milieu, is akin to the pickle, still evident in its cucumbral origin, but with a taste and texture transformed.

Known in her homeland as the "Queen of Albanian folk songs" and highly esteemed for her stunning voice, range and vocal technique, the award-winning vocalist is accompanied by her husband, Raif Hyseni, whose innovations and compositions for accordion have garnered praise for his "speed demon accordion." With an ensemble that also includes clarinet, guitar, keyboard and percussion, Merita Halili and Raif Hyseni will astound you with their vocal and instrumental artistry.

The Michael Winograd Trio, with Patrick Farrell, Benjy Fox Rosen and Michael Winograd, features three major voices in the international contemporary Klezmer community. Performing new music and reimagined traditional and folk music, this ensemble aims to present a fresh way of listening to and enjoying the rich genre of Yiddish music. Drawing on a variety of influences, Winograd's new trio provides a full and genuine experience of Klezmer and Yiddish song. Dr. Joel Rubin, clarinetist, said, "Perhaps the leading voice of the younger generation of performers and composers within klezmer."

Yale StromYale Strom and Hot Pstromi: Dave Tarras: The King of Klezmer

Sunday, November 6 at 2 PM
Kligerman-Greenspun Performance Hall
National Yiddish Book Center,
Amherst, MA

The concert will explore the music, history, and stories about musician Dave Tarras—the “Benny Goodman” of klezmer clarinet. Hot Pstromi’s sound—a fusion of traditional klezmer, new Jewish music, Gypsy, hasidic, world beat, and Balkan music—is unique and celebrated. Bandleader Yale Strom (violin) is the world’s leading ethnographer-artist of klezmer music, culture and history. His prodigious klezmer research was instrumental in helping form the repertoire of Hot Pstromi.

כנורkēnòr will be performing at the

Lancaster Jewish Community Center, Oregon Pike

Lancaster, Pennsylvania

November 6th 2011, 2:00pm

כנורkēnòr is four musical listeners, playing violin, double bass, guitar and drums.

Together, they will be performing a selection of jazz standards and Jewish tunes, following contemporary jazz practice, including tastefully performed heads, sensitive ensemble, and insightful improvised solos.

Members

Christopher Brooks, violin, is former concertmaster of Orquesta Bética Filarmónica de Sevilla (Spain) and the Harrisburg Symphony, and violinist with the Susquehanna String Quartet. Brooks draws from deep classical and Jewish roots in his thoughtful and soulful improvisations.

Pete Bainbridge, bass ‘viol, supports the ensemble with a solid harmonic and rhythmic foundation as well as offering tantalizing, free-ranging solos.

Jon Kunkle’s classically-trained and jazz-inspired electric guitar engoldens the sound of the ensemble, both while tastefully supporting the melody and during his elegant solos.

Dave Young has played drums with every important jazz musician in the region. Young has the rare ability to stitch an ensemble together, creating a whole much more than its parts.

Skokie Theatre
7924 N. LIncoln Ave.
Skokie, IL

Bohemian Cabaret ensemble Vagabond Opera is described by the Washington Post as "A band of ceaseless charisma, boundless energy, impeccable musicianship and more than a little touch of both the naughty and exotic."

The group delivers passionate offerings of Bohemian cabaret for young and old. Paris hot jazz, gut bucket swing, tangos, Ukrainian folk-punk ballads, klezmer and vigorous originals meet a world of riverboat gambling queens, Turkish belly dancers, and the enigmatic Marlene Dietrich. Weaving elements of Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington and Edith Piaf with absurdist flair, theatrics and an old world mood, Vagabond Opera presents the new wave of opera–lusty voices singing in 13 languages and presenting a cabaret of rich musical phrasing, sparkling lyrics and indomitable stage presence, all played with exuberance, skill and a gritty Vagabond edge. This is Opera liberated and reinvented for everyone!

The internationally-acclaimed and Bay Area based Red Hot Chachkas infuse the klezmer tradition of Eastern European Yiddish music with jazz, rock, oldtime, classical, and latin influences. Their hot sound and uptempo beat has folks up dancing. Bandleader and classical violinist Julie Egger is joined by seasoned musicians from disparate backgrounds: soulful Barbara Speed (clarinet), balkanized Diana Strong (accordion), bluegrass Tony Phillips (mandolin), jazzy Breck Diebel (bass), and rockin' Michael Arrow (drums).

Cradle Duende presents a combination of klezmer and flamenco, 'klezmenco,' with an infusion of reggae and cumbia dance rhythms. Cradle Duende takes its name from the Spanish word 'duende,' in reference to a musically heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity; and a merging of disparate musical traditions that each evolved from independent cradles of civilization. Cradle Duende brings the strength of deep cultural roots into the party atmosphere.

L’AVENIR DE LA MUSIQUE KLEZMER

L’ARTICHAUT ORKESTRA : T for Teresa

Location : fnac, Digitick

Zoyres performs original and Eastern European traditional music (klezmer, Balkan, etc.), approaching these from both a "€œtraditional"€ and stretched out /experimental framework.

Veretski Pass offers a unique and exciting combination of virtuosic musicianship and raw energy that has excited concertgoers across the world. The trio plays Old Country Music with origins in the Ottoman Empire, once fabled as the borderlands of the East and the West. . . .

Casco Bay Tummlers, Brunswick, ME, 4 Jun 2011

New World Premieres and Old World Chestnuts

Concert by The The Casco Bay Tummlers klezmer band
Saturday, June 4th at 7 p.m.
at the Frontier Cafe, 14 Maine St - Fort Andross, Brunswick, Maine

Join us in the casual atmosphere of the Frontier Cafe where you can enjoy supper or a drink and share new and old music with The Casco Bay Tummlers. The Casco Bay Tummlers have been playing Jewish music from around the world in their personal, engaging style to audiences in Maine and well beyond for over twenty years. It's been a while since they've performed in the mid-coast area so they are happy to be presenting a concert of new repertoire - including a film score by flutist/guitarist Carl Dimow - along with some of the classic klezmer tunes that have endeared them to their fans.

You can look forward to hearing colorful instrumentation - Carl on flute, bass flute, electric and acoustic guitars, Phil McGowan on drum set and ethnic percussion, Julie Goell on bass and vocals, Nancy 3. Hoffman on accordion and vocals and Steve Gruverman on sax and clarinet - and contrasting styles: jazzy improvisation, witty show tunes, Middle Eastern grooves and, of course, soulful klezmer interpretations, some reflective and some that will tempt you to get up and dance.

The Tummlers are pleased to note that Carl's film compositions were funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Food, wine and beer for sale at concert.

Yankele
Musique klezmer

The music of the Jewish people reflects a perpetual motion from one country to another, one culture to another, various languages and modes of expression.

The stage shared by Lloica Czackis and Sorin Gheraliu is an encounter between a singer of Yiddish songs, with a nomad's heritage through seven countries and a Gypsy cymbalist from Rumania, descendent of a family of great Balkan musicians. It also recalls the distant memory of Jewish and Gypsy klezmorim who once played together in a world of Eastern Europe that no longer exists.

Their common language is music. Their music speaks various languages.

For the past five years, Lloica, sometimes accompanied by Sorin, have provided musical entertainment for Jewish cultural tours organized by Valiske.

If you have taken part in their trips, come and relive the past emotion. If you have never traveled with Valiske, come and discover a musical journey through medieval Spain, the Jewish pampas, the cabarets of Warsaw and New York in the 1920s, to far off Russia... Their program includes poems sung in Judeo-Spanish ("Ladino"), children's songs from the Jewish farming colonies of Argentina, New York jazz in Yiddish, as well as love songs in French and Hebrew.

Yankele, Paris, France, 20 May 2011

Yankele
Musique klezmer
