Dr. Feldman is the author of numerous works on Ottoman musical history and the history of Jewish klezmer music. He is a co-editor of the Medimuses Project for Modal Musics of the Mediterranean for the EnChordais School in Thessaloniki, Greece. He recently co-produced the CD Tanburi Isak with the Bezmara Ensemble of Istanbul for EnChordais. He is the artistic director of the current series “Shared Sacred Spaces: Music of the Mystics” at the 92nd Street Y.

While researching Turkish music in Istanbul, Karl Signell studied the ney (reed flute) with master musician Akagündüz Kutbay. His book on Turkish makam (mode), a standard reference in Turkish music studies, has been translated into Russian and Turkish. At the University of Maryland College Park, he directed graduate studies in ethnomusicology. Since 1995 Signell has edited the web journal Ethnomusicology OnLine (EOL).

Glenn Dickson leads the famed Shirim Klezmer Orchestra, and its alter ego, Naftule's Dream in a rare double-bill performance that explores the contrast and connections between traditional and modern Klezmer. A Boston institution for the last 20 years, Shirim has been hailed as a Billboard Magazine "Critics Choice" and is recognized for its rocking spirit and high level of musicianship. Naftule's Dream has received equally critical acclaim for their musical skill and innovation from the Boston Phoenix and Village Voice. Shirim's members -include: Glenn Dickson, clarinet; David Harris, trombone; Michael McLaughlin, piano & accordion; Andrew Stern, banjo; Jim Gray, tuba; Eric Rosenthal, drums. In Naftule's Dream, Gary Bohan, cornet, replaces David Harris.

Take a little jazz, a little rock and mix it with an Eastern European Jewish wedding party and you’ve got an evening of Klezmer – old and new. Journey through the evolution of Klezmer music and discover the connections between the traditional style of Shirim Klezmer Orchestra and the modern sounds of its alter ego, Naftule’s Dream.

Klezmer is the music of the Eastern European Jews performed by Yiddish troubadours throughout Europe for 400 years. The Klezmer sound washed ashore in America during the great immigration period, when it first collided with the syncopation of American city life, the excitement of jazz, blues and ragtime, and the energy of the big bands. In recent years Klezmer has experienced a resurgence in popularity with Shirim and Naftule’s Dream at the forefront of this renaissance!

"You don’t have to speak Yiddish to dig this music. They are exotic a little and hot a lot. Superior musicians!" — Woods Hole Folk Music Society, in reference to the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra

For the first time in Boston, join the highly acclaimed soloist Rami Danoch and friends, for an unforgettable evening of 30 years of Middle Eastern classics, including a special tribute to the legendary Zohar
Argov. Tsliley Haud will be accompanied by Middle Eastern dance entertainment by Johara, Dan Ben-Dror Marshall and friends. A full dinner menu, including traditional Greek delicacies and a cash bar will be available from Dionysos, who's venue is so appropriate for this show.
(Read a review of Dionysos @ http://www.hiddenboston.com/Dionysos.html).

Tsliley Haud, formed in 1974, was composed of singer, Rami Danoch, and guitarist, Yehuda Keissar. They performed at the local venues at Kiryat Uno, the Israeli city of their origin, where the two produced their first record, including the songs Chassida Tzchora, Laner Velivsamim, Chanale Itbalbela, Bezichri, and more. Although this record was meant
as a trial to gage the level of interest, it sold over 200,000 copies, with many of its songs topping the charts. That year, the group commenced an amazing performance tour throughout Israel, and was received with dizzying success. Tsliley Haud produced about ten more records, music videos and shirts, to their many admirers amongst the
Jewish communities around the world. The unifying aspect of Tsliley Haud was their authentic sound and their combining of East and West with traditional music and instruments and young and talented musicians that
would continue their parents' generation. The group featured a unique blend of religious, folk, and world music, many of which have become classic folk dances and standard Chafla (celebration) songs. In 1985 the group separated and some of the musicians moved abroad, while Rami Danoch continued to perform in Israel and around the world. Yehuda
Keissar composed for several singers including the late Zohar Argov. In 2003, after about 18 years, Tsliley Haud rejoined and embarked on a special and exciting comeback tour named, "Tsliley Haud, The Band Unification".

This event is brought to you and produced by HaKesher Magazine and the
Brookline Community Center for the Arts (BCCA), in conjunction with
Johara Snakedance Productions, and with special thanks to George
Kariotis of Dionysos.

Music from Romania and a few other places...
Art Bailey’s Orkestra Popilar is a quintet consisting of accordion, two
violins, mandolin and bass that highlights both well-known and more obscure
klezmer tunes, as well as Bailey’s own original compositions. The
repertoire is a mix of early 20th century Jewish fiddle pieces, original
compositions, improvisation, and features material originally recorded by
Romanian-born cymbalom master and Lower East Side restaurateur, Joseph
Moskowitz. Reminiscent of an earlier time in the history of recorded Jewish
music, the result is fresh, unique, and thoroughly engaging.
