Henry Sapoznik interview--the banjo scoop

Mark Rubin interviews Henry Sapoznik about the banjo. It was the banjo, in a way, that brought Sapoznik to klezmer. But Henry has a lot to say about the Sixties old timey music scene, playing banjo, growing up the son of a cantor, and, of course, klezmer banjo. The interview came out in the summer of 2002. Rubin just brought it to my attention this week.

"vorbei" (beyond recall)

I want to bring to your attention a real "oytser", released in 2001/2 in germany: "vorbei" is a fine collection of 11 CDs and on DVD and a more than 6oo page illustrated book about musical performances and its great artists by the "Jüdischer Kulturbund" produced in the years 1933-1939 with "permission" of the regime. Old shellac goodies restored: yiddish songs, zionistic an khaluz songs, Khasanuth, cabaret etc, etc. Dont forget to have a handkerchiv ready. This matonele comes in a neat box. A must.

Usually we avoid mentioning Hanukkah until the great secular Jewish holiday, Thanksgiving, has passed. But this year, that's when Hanukkah starts. Fortunately, Hip Hop Hoodios, our favorite Spanish-English bilingual Jewish rappers have released the best Ladino Hanukkah hip hop video to date. Forget that. This is the best Hanukkah video to date. It pinche rocks!
