Music of Bukharan Jews: The Ilyas Malayev Ensemble

WILLIAMSTOWN: The Ilyas Malayev Ensemble will perform in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall at Williams College (second floor of the Bernhard Music Center) on Sunday, November 14, at 3:00 p.m.

The renowned ensemble performs shash maqam, the traditional classical music of the Bukharan Jews of Central Asia. Shash maqam is deeply emotional music for voice and a variety of string instruments and drums that has its roots in Persia. They have released several successful CDs and have performed throughout the U.S. and at major international world music festivals.

A NYC emigrant from Uzbekistan, Malayev was well-known in the former Soviet satellite as a vaudevillian singer and comedian, but his secret life as an amateur singer of the Persian maqam flourished at the same time.
