Another Realm, featuring Hankus Netsky and Linda Chase at Temple Beth Israel in Waltham on Sunday, September 30th.
On Sunday, September 30th at 7 PM, Temple Beth Israel Coffeehouse will present Another Realm, a jazz, world music, and improvisation ensemble featuring four of the Boston area’s most adventurous and creative musicians. The group consists of pianist and reed player Hankus Netsky, flutist/composer Linda Chase, bassist Chris Rathbun, and percussionist Tupac Mantilla. Together, they explore a repertoire that includes pieces from South American, Eastern European, Asian, and Jewish traditions, jazz standards, music of romantic and impressionist European composers, poetry-based improvisations, and original songs and compositions.
Hankus Netsky is an instructor in jazz, contemporary improvisation, and Jewish music at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Vice President for Education at the National Yiddish Book Center, and founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, an internationally renowned Yiddish music ensemble. "Another Realm" gives Netsky a chance to go beyond the traditional klezmer music he is best known for and explore a variety of improvisational genres.
Linda Chase teaches composition, arranging, world music, jazz and improvisation at Berklee College of Music. She is the recent winner of the Kaji Aso Studio's "Tanabata" Composition Prize, the recipient of a Berklee faculty composition grant, has composed for the American Repertory Theatre Institute in Cambridge, and is a featured performer in concerts and at clubs throughout the Boston area. Tupac Mantilla is a native of Colombia, where he is well known for his percussion work in both traditional, and contemporary music. Bassist Chris Rathbun has performed with "Papa" Jo Jones, Tiny Grimes, Terry Lynn Carrington, Sir Charles Thompson, Herb Pomeroy, The Artie Shaw Orchestra, and numerous other artists.
