Jewish Music: a celebration in three parts, Jan 25-27, 2008

Jewish Music & Dance: (Jan 25-27): The first part of the 2008 Linden Lectureship Series at Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville (01 East Jefferson Street, Phone 434 295-6382) will be weekend workshops on Jewish dance led by Steve Weintraub, a nationally recognized authority on authentic Eastern European dance. He has a special gift for sharing the style, flavor, steps, and context of Yiddish dance. For many years, he has led weekend retreats and longer workshops on Jewish dance around the country. Music will be provided by the UVA Klezmer Ensemble under the direction of Joel Rubin

Sun, Jan 27
(10:15-noon): Steve presents an "Old World Wedding," including traditional Jewish wedding music and dances, for parents and their Religious School children. This will be participatory for the families.

(4:00-6 pm): Workshop on Yiddish dance (especially Klezmer music). This is aimed at those who love folk dancing. Steve will lead and instruct the participants, so that they learn a number of dances. Please Note: dinner will be provided for those attending this Yiddish folk dance workshop (RSVP required at the CBI office 295-6382).

(7-9 pm): Jewish dance party. Steve leads the festivities, assisted by those who came to the afternoon workshop. The UVA Klezmer Ensemble, under the direction of Joel Rubin, will accompany Steve for the party. Refreshments will be served.
