IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SHORASHIM (INCLUDING DETAILS FOR THOSE COMING
FROM OUT OF TOWN) & SOME NEW THINGS FOR THIS YEAR

* On the opening Friday night, Seadia Amishai will conduct a Yemenite
Kabalat Shabbat which he is known for at the popular Kibbutz Ginegar
end-of-month Oneg Shabbat dance session (also on August 31).

* To kick off the 20th anniversary year of our Rikuday Dor Rishon dance
session, we will honor the early choreographers of Israeli folk dancing
who are no longer with us. Ayalah Goren, who knew all of them personally,
will give three special workshops teaching some of their best dances.

* Shorashim continues the tradition of providing the best teachers
at an affordable cost. Regular rates per session are the same as last
year. By popular request, we are offering a special reduced rate for the
whole weekend of only $130.

* You can pick and choose the workshop(s) and party/marathon nights that
are appropriate for you, which can result in a considerable savings. Make
your plans based on the preliminary schedule listed above.

* Much of the day is free, with workshops by our guest teachers scheduled
in mid-afternoon, so you can sleep late or take advantage of the numerous
attractions in New York City during part of the day.

* All registration is on-site and there is no formal pre-registration.
However, reservations for those coming from out-of-town will be accepted.
Since space may be limited, entry will be on a first come-first serve
basis and latecomers will be admitted as space permits to each event.

* As a courtesy to visitors to New York City attending Shorashim, a list
of reasonably priced hostels and hotels within walking distance of Bridge
for Dance will be provided, if requested.

* A video will also be available of all the dances taught at the weekend
from Ben Hole (who also has videos of previous Shorashim weekends).

Klezmer ceilidh, Edinburgh, Scotland, Aug 26

Sunday 26 August from 3-6pm

Edinburgh Festival Fringe Hopkele

Be part of the first ever Scottish Klezmer Keilidh at Dancebase, 14-16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh

Renowned Klezmer Dance Kaller Guy Schalom will lead and teach traditional Eastern European Yiddish circle, square and chain dances, including Freylekhs, Shers, Horas and Bulgars. And just to help put that extra ‘spring’ in your step will be klez-fiddler extraordinaire Ilana Cravitz and the Hopkele House Band (Dave Shulman –clarinet, John Bone – clarinet, Simon Carlyle – tuba) with the lively Jewish party music widely known as klezmer.

A Yiddish Barn Dance for the 21st century – not to be missed! If you can’t be there, tell your friends….

Tickets: £10. Bring a Pal: book two places at the same time and get the second half price (subject to availability). 0131 225 5525. www.dancebase.co.uk. Dancebase National Centre for Dance, 14-16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2JU

Israeli Folk Dancing, NYC, Aug 26, 2007

After several years of trying to move dancing outdoors after our classic Israeli folk dance session stops in the summer -- it is finally going to happen. Thanks to Shimon Boyar and several volunteers from our sunday night dance session, people will now be able to continue doing the dances they love throughout the summer and doing it outdoors (just like the old days when all indoor folk dance sessions stopped for the summer in New York).

Here are the details:
Classic Israeli Folk Dancing Plus Some International
Every Sunday 6-9pm July-August 2007
Riverside Park -- Enter the park either at 103rd St. and walk south to the end of the soccer field or at 96th St. and walk north to just before the soccer field. Dancing will be in a plaza there above the basketball courts at around 101st St.

If you can't find the location or if there is a question about cancellation because of weather, call Shimon at 917-348-0972.

Small contributions to defray the cost of licenses and equipment will be appreciated

The Empty Bottle
1035 N. Western Ave, Chicago, IL

The Rabbinical School Dropouts are Sun Ra, the Hampton Grease Band, Frank Zappa and the Klezmatics all rolled into one. The music of the Friedmann brothers is fresh, imaginative and the future of Klezmer music.

Their big band (featuring oboe, mandolin, bassoon, theremin, toy piano, tablas, etc.) storms through a dozen creative originals touching upon klezmer, jazz, funk, Latin, rock, and varied mishegoss along the way.

Jewish garage jazz with a sick sense of humor from Long Beach, California. It’s been called Esoteric Space Klezmer, but mostly its just wild musical fun.

The Dropouts previously performed at chicago's HotHouse and Lakeside Congregation. Appearing with special guests, to be announced.

Nicki and Lisa Parrott, Brooklyn, NY, Aug 16

Nicki and Lisa Parrott here. We have a great gig coming up at Barge Music at the Fulton ferry landing in Brooklyn on the 16th of August. If you haven't been to any of the concerts at Barge music yet, you're in for a real treat. It's a lovely venue. It's indoors, very charming with great views by the water, parking, and it's very close to the famous Grimaldi's pizza restaurant, and the lovely River cafe.

We will be playing a few Australian folk songs in a jazz style, and Nicki will also be singing a whole new repertoire that we've been rehearsing with the help of a beautiful piano player, John DiMartino. We will be performing as a quartet with drums.

Anyway, we're really looking forward to this gig and we would love to see you there if you can make it. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

More info about Barge Music below.
