Weekly Israeli Dancing with Leng & Yigal, Stamford, CT, Jul 2, 2008

We are dancing at the Stamford JCC (1035 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT) !!

Israeli Dancing with Leng & Yigal! Did you think you can't dance? Think again!!

We are pleased to announce our new Wednesday evening session, starting July 2 at the Stamford JCC in the dance studio!

We’ll be dancing from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. We worked very hard to get this session organized and started. Those who asked us to open another session and were enthused about an evening session, please be sure to come and show your support so that the JCC will know that there is enough interest to sustain this class. If there is not enough support, we will have to close it. We would like to be able to continue this session in the Fall, either on a Wednesday, or another week night, depending on the availability of the studio.

Beautiful hardwood floors, very good sound system, very friendly dancers, delicious light refreshments ... what more can we ask for?

Listen to beautiful Israeli music & live drumming! It's also a great way to exercise!

We get dancers from New York City, local Connecticut towns (Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, Trumbull), in addition to Westchester and New Jersey!

Yiddish Summer Weimar world-premiere, Krakow, Poland, July 2, 2008

World-Premiere Concert of “The Other Europeans” project, with Kalman Balogh (director of the Roma band, cimbalom, Budapest), Alan Bern (project director, director of the Yiddish band, piano/accordion, Berlin) Dan Blacksberg (trombone), Paul Brody (trumpet, Berlin), Marin Bunea (violin, Chisinau), Christian Dawid (clarinet, Berlin), Matt Darriau (flute, Brooklyn), Csaba Novak (bass, Budapest) Petar Ralchev (accordion, Plovdiv), Stas Rayko (violin, Hamburg), Adrian Recean (clarinet, Paris), Mark Rubin (tuba, Austin), Guy Schalom (drums, London), Adam Stinga (trumpet, Chisinau).

In London, Berlin, Paris, and other centers of “world music” today, mixtures of klezmer, Roma, and Balkan musics are hot in the dance clubs. Does a deeper relationship exist among these musics, or is this just the latest pop music trend? “The Other Europeans,” created and directed by Alan Bern, sets out to explore the common roots of Yiddish and Roma music in Moldavia, Wallachia, and as far as Istanbul in the early 20th century. The project brings together 14 internationally renowned musicians to create two new bands – one Yiddish and one Roma. A two-year project, in 2008, the two bands will choose a common Moldo-Wallachian repertoire but play separately, focusing on what makes Yiddish and Roma styles unique from each other.

In the following year, the two bands will join forces and create new music combining both styles and going beyond the traditional repertoire, presenting the results in the summer of 2009.

Don't miss the fireworks at the world premier concert of The Other Europeans!

Hi Folks, I want to invite you to a small concert taking place on Sunday July 6th at 7:30PM Anja Kollmuss and I have been preparing two sets of International music, based on the theme of traveling. This is material we will be performing throughout Switzerland, as well as Berlin, and Madesimo, Italy at the end of July. We've rented Zeitgeist_Outpost. 186 1/2 Hampshire St. in Inman Square. It is behind 186 Hampshire, hence the "1/2." (note venue change) to try out the material in front of... -"gulp"- friends, colleagues, and even those we respect. LOL :-) Anja will be singing, playing recorders, baritone horn and even kazoo, and I will be on accordion and guitar. Yes, its an annoying instrument concert, and it gets even more annoying because Anja lets me sing a song. (I know at least 4 and half of you that won't come now). So there's no better way to tighten a set of music than to play it in public, especially in front of people who have ears and big opinions, and those are what we want, big "constructive" opinions. Here's the info: Sunday July 6th 7:30PM the Zeitgeist_Outpost. 186 1/2 Hampshire St. in Inman Square. Hope you can make it. Pax M

Workshop with Rona Kenan, London, UK, Jul 8, 2008

Workshop with Rona Kenan
Tuesday 8th July, 6pm to 8pm
(Followed by Jam until 9pm)

Singing-songwriting workshop with Israel's new female leading artist whose dark velvety voice, biting lyrics and striking presence have set the bar.

By the young age of 18, Rona Kenan was already heralded as a "discovery," with promising talent as a musician, singer and songwriter. Her first public appearance attracted much attention, when she performed two original songs for Eran Tzur's program and album, in memory of the poetess Yona Wollach. Since then, she has composed for and performed in numerous and varied projects.

In 2004, she released her long-anticipated debut album, "Breathing Down to Zero," produced by leading Israeli producer Izhar Ashdot, with 11 original tracks in both Hebrew and English. She has also written the music for a number of Israeli films and television series. In February 2007, Rona released her second album: "Through Foreign Eyes". The disk presents ten songs, all composed and written by her.

Yiddish Summer Weimar world-premiere, Weimar, Germany, July 10, 2008

THE MIDDLE EAST PEACE ORCHESTRA

Distribution : Henrik Goldschmidt : hautbois,voix; Hazzan Jack Kessler : chant lead; Maurice Chedid : chant lead et oud; Joe “Flip” Kessler : violon électrique; Jeppe Skovbakke : basse; Tobias Allvin : bouzouki et voix; Anders Vesterdahl : accordéon; Mohamed Zaki : percussions; Avida Ben-Yehuda: percussions;

Sonia's Band Mazeltov presents: UP-AND-COMING YIDDISH CABARET

Following its recent success at Klezkanada Festival and a number of venues in the heart of Montreal's trendy Mile-End quarter, Sonia's Band Mazeltov is taking its unique cabaret project further! The band will be performing its innovative Yiddish Cabaret with a multicultural twist at the cozy Beth Ora Synagogue on Wednesday, July 16th and at the well-respected Casa del Popolo on Wednesday, July 23rd.

An innovative form of cabaret which combines Yiddish and Hebrew chansons with klezmer music and original poetry as well as songs in French and Russian. The elegant concerts present the gusto and verve of traditional Yiddish cabaret, or kleynkunst (literally, "the intimate art") in a performance experience which leaves no audience untouched.

Sonia Falkovitch grew up in Moscow and in Berlin and has lived in Montreal since the age of 20. Since childhood her passion has been Yiddish chanson. Sonia is also an accomplished actress, and has appeared in numerous productions in Montreal including the Russian-language production Franzuzkie Strasti and collaborations with Theater "O!". She also hosted the popular cultural programme "Russian Hour" on Global Channel from 2003-2004.

Sonia will be joined by Montreal's most vibrant klezmer musicians: Ellen Gibling on harp, Isak Goldschneider on clarinet, Tim Walsh on mandolin/double bass as well as Gypsy king Sergiu Popa on accordion.

"Degenerate Music": Jewish Music of Weimar Germany
The Mendocino Music Festival
Thursday, July 17, 8:00 pm
Susan Waterfall & The Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Players
Erin Neff, vocalist

After World War I, Weimar Berlin was a cauldron of artistic ferment as avant-garde artists and intellectuals, most of them Jewish, struggled to create a modern German culture. Exuberant freedom and hectic experimentation masked a sense of impending doom. After 1933, Hitler denounced them all as "degenerate" and their forced exile carried Weimar modernity to the rest of the world. A re-creation of this fascinating and pivotal era with cabaret and chamber music of Weill, Schoenberg, and Eisler, photographs and film.

Boban Markovic Orkestar, Philadelphia, PA, Jul 24, 2008

Festive gypsy brass band Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar ignites an "unbeatable Balkan dance party" (Songlines) in the Kimmel Center's Perelman Theater on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 7:30pm.

Hailed as the greatest of Balkan trumpeters, Boban Markovic, the legendary native of Serbia's gypsy brass heartland, has led his 13-piece Orkestar to international acclaim, enhancing the traditional repertoire with elements of jazz, Latin and pop, among others. Boban and his son Marko lead the Orkestar into new directions with their trail-blazing musical mix, which the New York Times calls a ""a stunning blast of exuberance and virtuosity."

"With nods to klezmer, jazz, Latin and deep-fried funk injected into the mix, the Boban Markovic Orkestar knows where their music's been but they're hell-bent on sling-shotting it straight into the future." —Global Rhythm

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 215-893-1999, online at www.kimmelcenter.org/global, or at the Kimmel Center box office open daily from 10am to 6pm and later on performance evenings. (Additional fees may apply.) For group sales call 215-790-5883.
