Summer Weimar 2008 - Yiddish WorkshopsMusiktheorie für Folkmusiker
Aug 8-10

Sunday, August 10

Free admission, reservations not required.

Yiddishkayt is proud to participate in the annual commemoration of of Soviet Yiddish Writers. Fifty-six years ago, on August 12, 1952, the Soviet regime of Joseph Stalin executed fourteen prominent Yiddish writers and Jewish communal officials in an attempt to wipe out Jewish culture.

This year, we recognize Soviet Jewish composer S. Polonski, who contributed several well-known songs to the Yiddish repertoire. The Mit Gezang Yiddish Chorus of the Workmen's Circle will delve deeper into Polonski's musical legacy, performing the entirety of his songbook written for Yiddish-speaking schoolchildren in the Soviet Union, published in 1931. This unique program will be in Yiddish and English.

David Chevan CD release, NYC, Aug 20, 2008

band photoThe Afro-Semitic Experience

I am excited to announce the forthcoming release of my new CD, Yizkor: Music of Memory. It is an album of original settings of the prayers and psalms associated with Yizkor, the Jewish memorial service. It was recorded this past November with Hazzan Alberto Mizrahi and my group, The Afro-Semitic Experience. Although there have been a number of jazz artists who have written requiem and memorial pieces I am fairly certain that no one has ever written a jazz setting for the Yizkor service.

On August 20, at 7:00 p.m. we will be premiering the work at the historic Museum at Eldridge Street in the lower east side of Manhattan. This is going to be quite a concert. Hazzan Mizrahi will be coming to New York from his home in Chicago to join us for this performance. We will also be joined by our old friend, trumpeter Saskia Laroo, who is coming to New York from her home in Amsterdam. And Hazzan Jack Mendelson, my teacher and mentor in the ways of Hazzanut is also planning to sing some pieces with us and possibly a duet with Hazzan Mizrahi (he's coming from White Plains which is practically in New York!). I have the feeling that this is going to be a good night of music.

The address of the Museum at Eldridge Street is 12 Eldridge Street in New York City. If you are interested in tickets or for more information please call 212-219-0888 or visit their web site at www.eldridgestreet.org . I hope that you will join us for that performance.

Tropically-Charged Music Festival Returns Celebrating Jewish Miami Through Music

Returning after an initial smashing success in its first year, The Guava Rugelach Festival is a music program featuring locally-based musicians representing Miami Jewish Latin, Israeli, and Yiddishkeit communities. The Guava Rugelach Festival, produced by Temple Israel along with a broad variety of community partners, aims to showcase what it sounds like when Jews from different corners settle together under palm trees once again as in biblical Israel, but instead in a tropical melting pot positioned along the Atlantic Ocean.

“Guava Rugelach is totally about the merging of cultures and traditions as Jews have wandered around the globe, carrying with them flavors and traditions to be infused with the flavors and traditions they pick up along the way. Miami, tropical paradise that it is, has an inherent global soundtrack – one that features Jewish music that is equally influenced by its peripatetic people. In addition to showcasing for the Greater Miami community how this plethora of globally-influenced cultural identities define Jewish music and Jewish experience in Miami, this project aims to forge new and lasting ties amongst the Jewish community,” says Guava Rugelach founder and Director, Jenni Person.

Newcomers to Guava Rugelach in it’s second year are: “Miami’s (almost) All-Gal Klezmer Band,” The Judettes; Miami-based Israeli musician, Adam Gil, with a trio performing Israeli and Morrocan music; and the highly polished Chassidic Jazz Project, recognized locally and around the globe for their Jazz rooted in Jewish liturgy. Artists returning to the festival include celebrated Ladino singer Susana Behar who comes to Miami by way of Venezuela; Argentina-born Alejandra Czarny recognized locally and around the globe for her engaging performance of Yiddish songs; and Harmonic Motion presenting their signature globally-informed Sephardic music featuring European and Middle-Eastern sounds and instruments. Capping off the lineup will be the Guava Jam, gloriously joining all festival performers together on stage – representing the culturally rich cholent (a Jewish Sabbath stew) that is Miami Jewish.

Guava Rugelach serves as a meaningful draw for Miami’s Jewish musicians as well as audience, “I was thrilled to be a part of Guava Rugelach last year – the spirit and the energy and the diversity of the sold-out audience was all so incredible, “says returning singer Susana Behar, “I really look forward to being amongst the performers again, sharing this experience as artists and as members of Miami’s unique Jewish community.”

Tickets are $18 for General Admission and $36 for VIP tickets assuring priority reserved seating. Kids three and under free on laps, $6 for kids 4 to 12. To purchase tickets go to www.brownpapertickets.com or call 800.838.3006.

The Guava Rugelach Festival is being presented by Temple Israel of Greater Miami through the support and partnerships of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Shalom Israel Radio, the Anti-Defamation League's Hispanic Jewish Initiative, the Yiddish Culture Center, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, Federación Sefaradí Latinoamericana (FeSeLa), Temple Moses, The Jewish Agency for Israel, Temple Beth Sholom, Temple Judea, Beth David Congregation, and the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center.
