All Star New York Yiddish Sing-along, New York, NY, 12 October, 2010

The next All Star New York Yiddish Sing-along will take place on Tuesday, October 12, at 7:30pm at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 West 83rd Street.

This will be the third such event in recent years led by the inimitable artistic director of the National Yiddish Theater - Folksbiene Zalmen Mlotek. The large audiences that attended the earlier two Yiddish Sing-alongs found themselves in the warm embrace of a heymish community sharing songs that evoked memories of a vibrant Yiddish speaking world, and connections to its glorious culture. The high percentage of younger participants was yet another sign that Yiddish is very much alive and will be part of the New York experience for generations to come.

This year's line-up of singers includes some of our most popular performers of Jewish music - artists who travel the world, and perform in a wide range of musical genres: Cantor Bob Abelson, Phyllis Berk, Joanne Borts, Adrienne Cooper, Magda Fishman, Cantor Rebecca Garfein, Annette Ezekiel Kogan, Avram Mlotek, Avram Pengas, Daniella Rabbani, Basya Schechter, Di Shekhter Tekhter, Cantor Dan Singer, Zalmen Mlotek's Yiddish Singers, The Folksbiene Troupe, The Jewish People's Philharmonic Chorus/yidisher filharmonisher folks khor, under the musical direction of Binyumen Schaechter - and some special surprise performers

There will be a Klezmer band accompanying the concert - with some of our finest musicians, including Margot Leverett, Marty Confurius, Matt Temking and others.

Every song will be available in transliteration so that every audience member will be able to fully participate and fill the glorious sanctuary of Congregation Rodeph Sholem with the sounds of Mame-loshn. Our emcee will be that debonair Yiddishist from Avantura - Corey Breier.

The concert is presented by Golden Land Concerts & Connections, with support from the National Yiddish Theater - Folksbiene, The Workmen's Circle/ Arbeter-Ring, League for Yiddish/Afn Shvel, Yugntruf, Congregation Rodeph Sholom, Congress for Jewish Culture, Yiddish Artists & Friends/ Actors Club/Yiddish Theatrical Alliance.

General admission tickets are $20 if purchased in advance, and $22 on the day of the concert. VIP reserved seating, with a post concert wine reception sponsored by City Winery, will be $50 if purchased in advance, and $60 on the day of the concert. Group rates - 15 or more tickets - 20% discount if purchased in advance.

For more information visit www.goldenland.com or call 212-683-7816. There is a Facebook evet called "Golden Land's Third Annual All Star New York Yiddish Sing-along. Please join us and help spread the word.

Set for September 14th, 2010 release, SILVER & ASH is an album, performance piece, and songbook that imagines her grandmother's life in Germany, from her birth in 1919 to her escape in 1938. For this project, Burson visited her own childhood home in Memphis, where she conducted interviews with her grandmothers, and ventured to the childhood homes of her ancestors in Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Ukraine."

HEAR, O ISRAEL
Originally recorded by Herbie Hancock’s quintet in 1968 and re-released by Trunk Records in 2008, Hear, O Israel is a unique work in Jewish music.

Composed for a New York shul by the then-teenage Jonathan Klein, now Professor at the world-famous Berklee College of Music, Boston, Hear, O Israel incorporates the core prayers of a traditional Friday night service. Klein arranged these prayers for eleven jazz musicians including four singers. The work will be performed here in the UK for the first time.

FOUR PIECES FOR PEACE
Four Pieces for Peace is a suite of meditations on prospects and dreams of a more friendly future – a companion to Hear, O Israel. This new music has been commissioned by F-IRE composers, including Barak Schmool, Jonathan Bratoeff, Nick Ramm and Tom Mason.

A musician-led association, the ten-year-old F-IRE COLLECTIVE today maintains a record label with more than 30 releases, an education programme and regular performances. Tonight’s performers include leading UK jazz singers Osnat Schmool, Cleveland Watkiss, Heidi Vogel and Marcina Arnold.

With thanks to the Arts Council England and Jonathan and Lucy Silver.

Produced by YaD Arts.

Concert of Old World Yiddish Songs and Melodies

Thursday October 21st 7pm

1133 Broadway between 25th and 26th Streets 2nd floor New York, New York
Admission $10 includes free coffee and cake
A program of Beautiful and Rare Old World Ballads, Songs, and Melodies performed in authentic traditional style

Info on performers:
Carol Freeman is an acclaimed performer, teacher, and researcher of a variety of Judaic, Balkan, and Greek vocal traditions. First introduced to Yiddish song by her grandmother, Carol became actively involved in its research and presentation in 1977 when she was selected as vocalist for the American Jewish Congress' CETA Artists' Project. Keenly aware of the extraordinary value of folk artistry and sensitive to the intricacies of traditional vocal expression, Carol approached Yiddish song with a unique focus. Choosing to learn her songs directly from Old World singers, she has developed a repertoire that includes old rarely heard ballads as well as the better known sing-along tunes. She has sought out the most beautiful of melodies and poignant of stories, and has used her musical expertise to make the subtle embellishments and vocal inflections of traditional Yiddish singers her own.

Ismail Butera is an accordionist of exceptional talent who is a master of countless world music styles. When he was a boy, his mother would frequently listen to Yiddish radio programs, as she loved the sound of the Yiddish clarinet. As a result, Ismail absorbed the stylistic nuances of virtuoso Yiddish playing at a young age. Ismail has a rare depth authenticity, and sensitivity in his interpretations of traditional Yiddish melodies. He is highly regarded for his work with numerous ensembles, including the Sounds of Taraab, the Balkan Brothers, and the Metropolitan Klezmer Band, and has worked together with Carol in Song of the Shtetl Jewish Music Ensemble, Sevda Balkan Music Ensemble, and the Smyrneiki Kompania.

Blurring boundaries and connecting sounds, syncopations, rhythms and roots is central to the mission inspiring the Guy Mendilow Band. Israeli peace songs and Sephardi canticas meet Bahian street beats and blues. Drawing from a life lived in Israel, South Africa and Brazil, where musical collaboration cuts through ancient conflict, Israeli born musician Guy Mendilow is sowing the seeds of peace with music.

It's no surprise, then, that the Guy Mendilow Band includes world class musicians from Israel, Argentina, Japan and the United States. Or to find the group now partnering with international peacemaking organizations, such as Seeds of Peace, whose work with Palestinian and Israeli youth and adult educators helps forge the personal relationships so critical to communication and reconciliation.

Anything is possible in Yiddish theatre – but dolls that talk back to you? When artists Zuni Maud and Yosl Cutler created their “Modicut” Yiddish puppet theatre at the end of 1925, it was an instant hit among the Yiddish-speaking masses in New York City, and within a few years they were touring Europe and the Soviet Union to great acclaim. Come hear the fascinating history of this unusual piece of Yiddish culture.

Eddy Portnoy teaches Yiddish language and Jewish literature and culture at Rutgers University. A contributor to The Forward and Tablet Magazine, he writes on Jewish popular culture with an emphasis on Yiddish.

The author will be introduced by Rivka Augenfeld, co-Chair of theYiddish Cultural Committee of the Jewish Public Library.

Guy Mendilow Band - The Ladino Project
Blurring boundaries and connecting sounds, stories, rhythms and roots is central to the mission inspiring the Guy Mendilow Band. The vibrant multicultural group’s latest offering, The Ladino Project, features centuries-old music from Jewish communities in places such as Smyrna, Salonica, Jerusalem and Sarajevo. Sung in Ladino, a language melding Spanish, Arabic, Greek, and Hebrew, these colorful canticas abound with stories of sailors seduced by sirens at sea, intrigue, fantastic dreams and the treachery of kings and queens.

Led by Israeli performer Guy Mendilow, the quintet makes this ancient music relevant to today’s audiences by recasting it through the lens of modern migrations. Drawn from the places Mendilow and his musicians have called home, from Israel and Brazil to Japan and the United States, the resulting music is a blend of haunting Sephardi, driven with Brazilian street beats, and tempered with blues. It is vibrant musical storytelling awash with warm vocal harmonies, intricate textures and spellbinding rhythms.

“The buoyant, life-affirming, sweetly acoustic music of Israeli-born Mendilow incorporates influences from across the Middle East, South America and beyond. It's a folk music of hope and affirmation, sophisticated in its delivery but easily accessible to listeners anywhere.” — Chicago Tribune
