Ann Arbor-based Into the Freylakh is one of the Detroit Area's most exciting up-and-coming bands. The group combines traditional Klezmer and Eastern European music with Jazz and Classical influences to create music that is at home in the concert hall and the dance hall. Isle of Klezbos is a soulful, fun-loving all-female powerhouse klezmer sextet based in NYC, performing an imaginative mix of styles from the far-flung map of Yiddish culture. The group was formed in 1998 by drummer Eve Sicular (bandleader of Metropolitan Klezmer), and also includes three other MetroKlezmer members: trumpet / flugelhorn artist Pam Fleming, clarinet / sax player Debra Kreisberg, and vocalist Deborah Karpel, plus virtuosi accordionist Carmen Staaf and bassist Saskia Lane. Band members' other influences range from Latin jazz to lieder, Cajun-zydeco to cabaret, and classical to funk to Balkan, folk, reggae, and swing. Appearing at Seattle's Bumbershoot, Vienna's KlezMORE (repeat engagements), St Louis' Edison Theatre, JCC of SF, and the legendary Caffe Lena, as well as NYC's Joe's Pub, Makor, Jewsapalooza, BAMcafe, Brooklyn Museum of Art (… also thrice at Michigan Womyn's Music Festival). Broadcasts include CNN Worldbeat; PBS' In The Life; and Showtime’s The L Word. Isle of Klezbos is in known for ecstatic grooves, stellar solos, and both swinging and rollicking beats. The band's latest studio single—a Latin/Yiddish groove of "Comes Love"—is the Klezbonus track on "Traveling Show" (Metropolitan Klezmer, 2007 live concert disc).
