In addition to popular klezmer tunes, we also perform klezmer covers of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Thelonius Monk. New Zealand's Jews Brothers Band is beyond klezmer. No lead clarinet, no drumming, no romantic violin... these "brothers" (plus one "sister") just get down to it with blasting brass horn, chonking gypsy-style mandolin, pumping tea-chest bass, and vibrant melodicas and accordion...all aided and abetted by soulful 5-part vocals that sound as if they come straight out of a mediaeval synagogue. Juez, based in Brooklyn, NY, is self-described as "breakbeat klezmer jazz;" they draw on klezmer modes in a unique exploration of jazz and progressive rock rhythms with influences ranging from Yemenite to hip hop. While their compositions are experimental, their sound isn't inaccessibly dissonant. It is this formulaic blending of styles and their exciting ridiculous antics on stage that gives this group such a wide appeal. Juez has performed with artists as diverse as: Satlah, Educated Consumers, Mattisyahu, 302 Acid, MC Son of Nun, and Gutbucket at locations ranging from the Hillel International, Art-O-Matic, Modular Mood Klezmer party, the Jewish Folk Arts Festival, University of Maryland, Harvard and The Knitting Factory.
