He's a super in the pocket groove player with a great harmonic and melodic sensibility. I always have a blast getting down with him and I hope you will join us for one or both of the sets. And if you're a musician you're welcome to bring your instrument and sit in during the second set.

Who is Manny Blanc, Brooklyn, NY, 4 Sep 2016

Who is Manny Blanc?—theremin edition

Thu, September 4th 10 pm
Barbès
376 9th St.
Brooklyn, NY 11215

WHO IS MANNY BLANC? will be celebrating the music and aesthetic of this little known dynamic 60's New York musician and arranger. This edition will feature the notable discoverer of the lost Blanc recordings, Adam O'Callaghan, on the rare Moog (console) theremin. Our Québécois thereminist will be helping us re-interpret the music from Mr. Blanc's obscure yet astonishing LP released in the early 60's called "Jewish Jazz". Exotica meets futurist jazz, meets proto-surf - from double electric guitars to harmonica driven duck-call dialogue to theremin. The LP is one of the earliest attempts at putting klezmer melody in a jazz and groovy out-there context.

The band features some of NY's finest klezies:

Matt Darriau - reeds,
Adam O'Callaghan - theremin and reeds
Avi Fox-Rosen - guitar
Yoshie Fruchter - guitar
Ari Folman Cohen - bass
Chris Stromquist - drums

The Shtetl Stompers, Brooklyn, NY, 4 Sep 2016

The Shtetl Stompers

Thu, September 4th 8-10 pm
Jalopy Tavern
317 Columbia Street
Brooklyn, NY

For years, les Shtetl Stompers roamed the cafes and music halls of the Northern Paris neighborhood Belleville, bringing a bit of Brooklyn Klezmer schmaltz to the city of lights. Now, they are bringing a touch of Yiddish Belleville to Brooklyn! On zee menu: Old Timey klezmer fiddle tunes, Franco-Yiddish crooning, Yinglish Screaming and some chanson françaises.

SCHMALTZ!

Thurs, September 8 at 5:30 PM
The Merion Folk Series
1611 Chicago Avenue
Evanston, IL, 60201.

Applying Chicago’s jazz world to the performance style of the middle of the century New York Yiddish theatre, old standards, and Sephardic and Klezmer songs, Schmaltz! rubs songs like And the Angels Sing and Bei Mir Bis du Schoen to a fresh patina with their total of over 150 years of music experience. Rebecca Toon's sensuous vocal and interpretive brilliance is sandwiched between her bright smile and her wickedly fun wit and humor. Henry Meisels sings tenor opera and the Jewish repertoire in ChickenFat Orchestra. There is no charge to attend, but this is the residents' dinner concert. You are welcome and might feel more comfortable ordering a drink and/or a dinner (they're good!).

Three renowned performers of Eastern European Jewish music come together in this exceptional new trio: Lorin Sklamberg, co-founder of the legendary Klezmatics; uniquely innovative clarinetist Merlin Shepherd, and the remarkable vocalist/pianist Polina Shepherd, originally from Siberia.
Each performer represents a different nation, yet their backgrounds are closely related, their ancestors emigrating from the Ukraine to find a better world elsewhere. This fresh collaboration blends traditional and contemporary Yiddish and Russian song with klezmer styles and Southern Mediterranean music. Influenced by several cultures and maintaining individual styles, the trio plays original and traditional material with freedom and spontaneity. With mournful solo clarinet, bouncy village songs, and some fiery vocals, their performance takes us on a breathtaking musical journey that is full of spirited joy and deep emotion.

Journey from Salonica to Sarajevo, following the stories of vagabond queens, pauper poets and lovers lost to the sea. The intertwining music and storytelling conjure an imagi-nation lost to war and upheaval, recorded in a language that blends archaic Spanish with Arabic, Hebrew and Greek. Forgotten Kingdom brings these tales to life, drawing on musicians' expertise and instrumentation from homelands of Israel, Palestine, Argentina and the USA. Soulful voices, masterful narration, heart-pounding percussion, and intricate soundscapes render these songs in all their color, drama and heart.

"Under the Wings of Rafa'el" book/cd launch, San Francisco, CA, 18 Sep 2016

I am overjoyed to share with you that the healing project I've been working on for the past few years—Under the Wings of Rafa'el: Blessings, Songs, and Explorations for a Healing Journey—is now complete! This project that began as a set of impromptu materials for a congregant undergoing chemotherapy, has developed into a small book with accompanying recordings (or recordings accompanied by a small book …). It includes 12 prayers focused on the healing of body and spirit, with explorations around the text of each prayer in the form of contemplations, meditations, visualizations, and artistic exercises, and is designed to be used in a variety of ways by people at different stages of emotional and physical healing, and with groups as well as individuals.

If you are able, I would dearly love you to join me at the launch event:

Sunday, September 18, 2016, 4-6pm
Congregation Sha'ar Zahav,
290 Dolores,
San Francisco, CA

We'll sing together, do some of the readings/artistic exercises from the book together, and have a good nosh.

This project has been made possible due to the extreme generosity and support of the Lloyd Symington Foundation, and also to all of you who taught, mentored, supported, nurtured, nourished, and helped in a myriad of ways. Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

More info about the project can be found on my website: sharonbernstein.com/under-the-wings-of-rafael.html

KlezCalifornia klezmer workshop/jam, Berkeley, CA, 25 Sep 2016

Sunday, September 25, 1:00-4:15pm.
Art House Gallery & Cultural Center,
2905 Shattuck Ave,
Berkeley, CA 94705

Each event will have two sessions The first session will be a 90-minute klezmer instrumental workshop for musicians with little or no klezmer experience but who are proficient on their instruments. It will be taught by an experienced klezmer musician and teacher, and will include playing tunes with charts, getting familiar with klezmer techniques, and learning some tunes by ear at a slow pace.

After a short break, there will be a 90 minute klezmer jam session for those with at least intermediate familiarity with playing klezmer and/or jamming. After the leader begins the session with a warm up tune or two, musicians will take turns "calling" a tune, with everyone learning new tunes by ear or enjoying playing/improvising on familiar ones. The leader will provide guidance for pace, transitions, and ensure an overall smoothly run and fun evening!

Come for both sessions or just one. Refreshments provided. Donation of $10-$20 requested. Reservations not necessary but greatly appreciated, please email jams[at]klezcalifornia.org and indicate what instrument you play and which event and which session(s) you plan to attend. We will also add you to a special mailing list through which you will receive more information, including who will teach/lead each event.
