Shepherd and the SklambergsSklamberg & the Shepherds

Wed, 22 Mar, 2017
National Centre for Early Music
York, UK

Three renowned performers of Eastern European Jewish music come together in this exceptional new trio: Lorin Sklamberg, co-founder of the legendary Klezmatics; uniquely innovative clarinetist Merlin Shepherd, and the remarkable vocalist/pianist Polina Shepherd, originally from Siberia.
Each performer represents a different nation, yet their backgrounds are closely related, their ancestors emigrating from the Ukraine to find a better world elsewhere. This fresh collaboration blends traditional and contemporary Yiddish and Russian song with klezmer styles and Southern Mediterranean music. Influenced by several cultures and maintaining individual styles, the trio plays original and traditional material with freedom and spontaneity. With mournful solo clarinet, bouncy village songs, and some fiery vocals, their performance takes us on a breathtaking musical journey that is full of spirited joy and deep emotion.

The First Annual Michael B. Rukin Memorial Concert

Wed, Mar 22, 2017—6 PM reception, 7:30 PM concert
Jordan Hall,
30 Gainsborough St.,
Boston, MA

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award among countless honors,
Yehudi Wyner is a treasure of Boston classical music. "A musical mensch-in-residence," the Boston Globe describes him as "a composer with a fiercely independent spirit, a modernist who believes that serious music can and should bring sensual pleasure."

The concert will capture the eclectic diversity of his work, performed by outstanding artists, including: clarinetist Richard Stolzman, violinist Daniel Stepner, double bassist Susan Hagen, Susan Davenny-Wyner conducting, Yehudi on the piano and many more--plus a few surprises. Following the performance, Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic Lloyd Schwartz engages Yehudi in a conversation.

728 State St.

In 1948, amateur folklorist Ben Stonehill set out to capture the folk songs of Jewish refugees entering the U.S. from Eastern Europe following the war. Every week that summer, Stonehill lugged a bulky wire-recorder from his home in Queens to the Hotel Marseilles on Manhattan's Upper West Side, recording the songs of newly-arrived refugees. In all, he recorded some 1,054 titles which are fully digitized and now being translated by Miriam Isaacs through the Center for Traditional Music and Dance.

Co-sponsored by the Mayrent Institute for Yiddish Culture and the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies.

Free and open to the public.

A rising star in the Israeli music scene, Aveva will share her story – from her family’s journey from Ethiopia, to her musical adventures across Israel and Europe, including performing with Idan Raichel and competing on Israel’s The Voice. All while we enjoy that magic that happens when Ethiopian and Israeli chefs cook together to create an African-inspired Shabbat dinner.
