The STORY: This summer New York's Vital Theatre commissioned me to adapt my book THE GOLDEN DREYDL (based on my piece with Shirim Klezmer Orchestra) as a fully-staged show for the holiday season. It's been a thrill working with director Linda Ames Key, choreographer Dax Valdes, and the rest of the professional staff, crew & talent at Vital. And what's more, I'm in the show!

To my delight, they cast me as the mysterious aunt, Tante Miriam, the Drosselmeier figure (and yes, I have a fabulous cape to swirl), who gives little Sara the gift of a Golden Dreydl at the family Chanukah party. The dreydl is, of course, an enchanted girl, who spins Sara off into a world of magic and adventure, riddles and demons . . . .

The REVIEWS:
"Casting the author as Tante Miriam was a stroke of genius as she gives the entire play a spiritual and essentially Jewish quality that sets it apart from the fluff of the original Nutcracker … The music is truly brilliant."—CurtainUp

"The Klezmer Nutcracker is a vibrant show. . . there's plenty in it for grownups to enjoy too, including remarkable sets, a few jokes meant to go over kids' heads, some great choreography and at least one achingly sweet moment of song. For kids there's a surprising amount of plot that definitely won't insult their intelligence, a few obligatory moments of gross-out humor and plenty of magic."—Gather

"Winning characters and enthusiastic cast …. This sort of thing is the true magic of the theater, the reason to take kids out to a show rather than plop them in front of a DVD."—Blogcritics.com

"The family party that you can actually go to."—Jewish Week

"The enterprising Vital Theatre Company’s production … contained a theatrical innocence I love…."—New York Observer

FAQ

Is it a ballet?
No. But there is lots of fantastic dancing, and we reference the classic "Nutcracker" a lot.

Is the music live?
No. But Vital re-mixed the original tracks Shirim recorded for WGBH, and they sound fantastic! It's all Tchaikovsky—kinda—arranged by Michael McLaughlin & David Harris with a klezmer twist.

Is it just for Jewish audiences?
Come on! I figure, if I can sing "Messiah" and watch "The Nutcracker" every year, it's time to open up the season to a few more traditions for everyone. We have a multi-cultural cast of great splendor; see photos here.

Is this a children's play?
Yes, but it's got enough lissome dancers & grownup in-jokes to delight even you. I strongly recommend it for kids 5–11.

How long is it?
The show runs an hour, with no intermission.

What if I want to avoid an audience full of small children?
Come to one of the 7 p.m. shows. I'm doing a "Conversation with the Author" after the ones on Dec. 18th & 22nd. Check the Vital page for dates & details.

Are there discounts available?
$10 discounts for all 7:00 p.m. shows! Just use code KLEZPM10 in advance or at the door.

Where should I sit?
I recommend the 4 back rows. It's a 9-row theatre, with seats highly raked, so all sightlines are great. If you're too close to the front you can miss some of the staging. If you book online, you can see which seats are still available & pick the ones you want.

Where did you get the idea for this story?
Please see my "Golden Dreydl" FAQ.

What else?
Books & CDs will be on sale in the lobby, and the cast & I will be out there signing programs after each show.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
A founder of The Klezmatics, Frank London is a Grammy award winning composer and trumpeter. He is featured on over 250 recordings with John Zorn, LL Cool J, Mel Torme, They Might Be Giants, Jane Siberry, and Itzhak Perlman. and from Carnegie Hall to Sex and the City.

Of his solo CD release "Hazonos" Wired Magazine writes, "One of the Most Stunning Albums of the Year - suggests both ancient, soul-wrenching and the most lyrical and reflective avant-garde jazz." His "Carnival Conspiracy (In the Marketplace All is Subterfuge)" was #1 in Rolling Stone's Top 10 Non-English CDs of 2006.

He was musical director for David Byrne and Robert Wilson's The Knee Plays. He's composed music for Tony Kushner's A Dybbuk, Vit Horejs' Lower East Side epic Once There Was a Village, John Sayles' The Brother from Another Planet, Pilobolus' Davenen, and Min Tanaka's Romance.

"The mystical high priest of New Wave Avant-Klez jazz, Frank London, has released an album that defies phony political barriers and exposes solid musical commonalties among Gypsy, Jewish and Arabic music." —All About Jazz

LJOVA AND THE KONTRABAND www.ljova.com/kontraband -- is chamber-jam music for the "remix generation". As if by alchemy, Eastern-European and Gypsy melodies, Latin rhythms, Jazz-inspired improvisations, and deeply rooted Classical forms are given new meanings in original compositions that fearlessly forge a new direction, with a nostalgic gaze towards the past.

Since making its debut at the Om Factory Yoga Studio in June 2006, the ensemble has performed at venues such as the New York's Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, where it was the opening musical guest of the Sundance@BAM Film Festival. The Kontraband is also a mainstay at New York's legendary venue Joe's Pub, and the Brooklyn-based club, Barbes.

Founded by the maverick film composer, arranger, and violist Lev 'LJOVA' Zhurbin --- hailed by Billboard magazine as "one of New York's fastest rising composers and instrumentalists" -- the ensemble also features his close collaborators on vocals, accordion, bass and percussion. Inspired by his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Osvaldo Golijov, the Kronos Quartet, the rapper Jay-Z and others, Ljova's compositions dazzle with intricate textures, odd rhythms and lilting melodies, creating music that is both fresh and timeless. The Kontraband's debut CD, "MNEMOSYNE", featuring special guests Frank London, William Schimmel, Uli Geissendoerfer, Alon Yavnai and Marcus Rojas, was released on September 28, 2008, and was singled out as "Top 10 of 2008" by The Jewish Week's George Robinson, as well as the blog Lucid Culture.

"[There is] nobody quite like the polymath Lev ['Ljova'] Zhurbin...The music he writes and plays is full of Brahmsian tone, Bartok lines, hiccupping Hungarian rhythms, Klezmer soul and the sexy plaintiveness of tango and the blues." —Justin Davidson, Newsday (now New York Magazine)

"Ljova and the Kontraband play genre-defying music beautifully and soulfully. Organically bringing together influences ranging from classical and new music, klezmer, tango, jazz, Gypsy music and more, their music is smartly original, steeped in tradition while moving those traditions forward. Ljova is also a savvy promoter who continually demonstrates that independent artists can effectively use new models of music distribution and social networking to bring their music to the public on their own terms." —Bill Bragin, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York City

"Ljova and the Kontraband drew a full house at Joe's Pub in Manhattan, forcing fans to stand three-deep at the room's swanky, dimly lit bar... The off-kilter rhythms [Ljova] favors recall the asymmetrical dance beats of central and southeastern Europe, where time signatures tend to look like hat sizes (7/8, 13/8, 15/16). They tug and pull at you in strange and mysterious ways, as do Ljova's melodies, which have the tuneful, emotive quality of good pop." —Alexander Gelfand, Jazziz

Soundbrush's artist showcase takes place during this year's APAP conferences, when arts presenters from across the United States descend on New York City for conferences and concerts.
The special performances will spotlight four of Soundbrush's most recent releases as well as introduce to many the independent label that is home to some of New York's most accomplished musicians.

THE ARTISTS:
FRANCISCO “PANCHO” NAVARRO took a huge risk when he uprooted his family to move to New York City from their native Argentina. His gamble paid off handsomely for the acoustic guitarist, and his resume now includes recording and concert work for everyone from Placido Domingo to Celia Cruz, and from Christian Castro to the Rolling Stones. He released his very-overdue solo debut on Soundbrush this year entitled Sweet Guitar which included little-known South American songwriters as well as a few of Navarro's own elegant compositions.

“Influenced as much by classical acoustic guitar legends like Paco de Lucia and Andrés Segovia as by Mexican boleros and Chilean folk, his playing is crystalline and affecting.” - NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

ROGER DAVIDSON is a flexible and diverse piano player with a special interest in Latin jazz, including salsa, tango and Brazilian samba. He launched Soundbrush Records with his own recordings, which have included Amor por el Tango, Rodgers in Rio, and Bom Dia. Davidson's musical reach also extends to Western classical traditions where his experience includes directing chamber orchestras and composing sacred choral music. His newest Soundbrush project, Pasion por la Vida, will feature a series of duets with the label's Latin Grammy-winning bandoneon master Raul Juarena.

“Davidson is one hell of a pianist who knows how to turn those keys over. This is a top-drawer performance recorded flawlessly.” - JAZZ.COM

DAVID FINCK is one of the top-tier jazz bass players in the country, with credits that include Paquito D'Rivera, Sinéad O'Connor, Dizzy Gillespie, Ivan Lins, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett and Andre Previn. Finck has appeared on over 250 CDs and was tapped by the Village Voice to write about Frank Sinatra as a jazz musician in a special issue celebrating the singer's 80th birthday. His solo debut on Soundbrush, Future Day. features Joe Locke on vibes, Tom Ranier on piano, and Joe LaBarbara on drums.

“A fine and unique musician, he can drive a rhythm section or create a sensative solo.” PHIL RAMONE
“In my opinion, there is no one who is as good a jazz bass player and collaborator.” ANDRE PREVIN

FRANK LONDON is a virtual one-man tour of Jewish, jazz and world music. His projects include the Klezmatics, the Hasidic New Wave, and the Klezmer Brass All-Stars. His Soundbrush debut is A Night in the Old Marketplace, an original multi-media musical theatre piece co-written with Glen Berger and inspired by the famous 1907 Yiddish play by I. L. Peretz. The CD's extraordinary score mixes Jewish, jazz, classical, and world beats with the stark cabaret of Kurt Weill and Tom Waits. The tragi-comic “shtetl ghost love story” made its debut earlier this year as part of WNYC's New Sounds Live series.

“One of the most interesting and colorful figures in the current revival of Jewish music…London is consciously and constantly working to expand the vocabulary of Jewish music, [but he] is also known for injecting a healthy dose of free jazz aesthetic and energy.” ALL ABOUT JAZZ

Eastern Europe. These two musicians represent a new generation of players of
Klezmer music which reaches back at least 125 years in time to Eastern
European Jews and traditional folk music using familiar and possibly
unfamiliar instruments—the tsimbl, a 19th century Button Accordion and a
violin. Program is free and open to the public of all ages. Light
refreshments will be served. Handicapped accessible. For directions to

NY Festival of Song: Latin Lovers, NYC, Jan 14, 2009

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2009
Peter Jay Sharp Auditorium at The Juilliard School

Latin Lovers: An Evening of Cuban and South American Song, the fourth annual NYFOS@Juilliard concert.
Songs by Guastavino, Astor Piazzolla, Carlos López-Buchardo, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Ernesto Lecuona, and many others.

New York Festival Of Song (NYFOS, www.nyfos.org">www.nyfos.org), co-founded and directed by pianists Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, who reinvented the song recital during the 1990 s with daring and dramatic programming (The New Yorker), announces its 21st season (2008-2009).

The company's New York City concerts begin on September 23 at the newly renovated Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center, with A Bernstein / Bolcom Celebration. The concert pays tribute to two of NYFOS s guiding lights, Leonard Bernstein and William Bolcom; Bolcom and his wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, will cap the evening with a selection of songs from their vast repertoire. The program also celebrates the ninetieth birthday of NYFOS s Founding Advisor, Leonard Bernstein, who bestowed the American premiere of his last work, Arias and Barcarolles, to the newly-formed company. Their subsequent recording of the work in 1989, with Judy Kaye and William Sharp, earned the composer a posthumous Grammy Award for Best New Composition.

Other concert programs this year include Fugitives (Nov. 18 and 20), works by composers who fled Europe during Hitler s rise to power; and Voices of the Jewish Diaspora (Feb. 10 and 12), songs in many languages from the worldwide Jewish community.

In December, 2008, Bridge Records will release an original cast recording of John Musto s Bastianello and William Bolcom s Lucrezia, the critically acclaimed one-act comic operas commissioned and premiered by NYFOS last season.

Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center is at 129 West 67th Street, New York, NY 10023. Subscriptions are available by writing to the box office at Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center, or by calling (212) 501-3330, or online at www.kaufman-center.org. Free tickets for the January 14 concert at Juilliard will be available at The Juilliard School s box office beginning January 5.

Guest artists at NYFOS for 2008-2009 include mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, the Lucrezia in Bastianello / Lucrezia last spring, and soon to sing Kitty Oppenheimer in the Metropolitan Opera s New York Premiere of Doctor Atomic; mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey, who will be seen as Cherubino and in many other roles at the Metropolitan this season; tenor Joseph Kaiser, the Tamino of the Kenneth Branagh film version of The Magic Flute, and Narraboth in the Met s Salome this year as well as at Covent Garden; soprano Dina Kuznetsova, featured in NYFOS s Obsession à la Russe, who will star as Alice Ford in a new production of Falstaff at Glyndebourne, and will appear with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; and mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham, who will be featured in opera and concert at Paris Theatre de la Champs-Élysées and the Lucerne Festival.

On its touring schedule, NYFOS brings Bastianello / Lucrezia, the acclaimed double-bill of one-act comic operas by William Bolcom and John Musto with librettos by Mark Campbell, to the Moab Music Festival in Utah on September 5; The Last Time I Saw Paris, French song from The Jazz Age to post-World War II, to the Robbie Colomore Concert Series in Chester, Connecticut (October 26) and the Andover Chamber Music Series in Massachusetts (November 9); Fugitives to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., presented by the Vocal Arts Society (November 14); Voices of the Jewish Diaspora to the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland at College Park (February 15); and Songs of the Irish Poets to the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in Katonah, NY (March 14).

Born to Tunisian parents, and raised in Tel-Aviv and Paris, Anath is now a New Yorker by choice. She writes and sings in English, French and Hebrew. “It took me a long time to understand that I don’t belong to any one place. I belong to every place,” she says. With her latest CD, the introspective and personal Dark Lullaby, she navigates the themes of love, loneliness and longing, and shifts to an entirely new and intimate sound. Recorded in Chile and New York with her husband, pianist, composer and producer Pablo Vergara, the CD recalls the sounds of some of Anath’s influences, from the psychedelia of Mazzy Star to the noir rock of Elysian Fields, and the feminist punk of PJ Harvey.

In the Jewish ghettos of Poland and Lithuania during World War II, a world of dislocation, terror and death, cabaret music thrived. Jewish audiences gathered in makeshift clubs and theaters to hear newly-created Yiddish songs, rooted in Jewish folk and liturgical music as well as European operetta, American ragtime and Argentine tango.Jewish performers tuned these cosmopolitan songs in a local key: satirical and elegiac, political and personal, angry and heartsick.Together they created something rare, scarcely conceivable: art at the edge of the abyss.

Adrienne Cooper, one of the world's most acclaimed singers of Yiddish vocal music, and Zalmen Mlotek, a leading figure in Yiddish musical theater, here present ghetto songs collected during and after the war.

for orchestra and narrator
based on COKBOY by Jerome Rothenberg

Boston Modern Orchestra Project
Gil Rose - conductor Matti Kovler - narrator

Jordan Hall, Boston January 17th 2009 08:00 PM

details: www.bmop.org/season/concert_detail.aspx?cid=91

Matti Kovler's A Jew Among the Indians (Cokboy) is a highly personal setting of a highly personal, and also political, poem by the New York-born poet Jerome Rothenberg (b.1931). Rothenberg, who has also been an anthologist, translator, and anthropologist, included Cokboy (parts 1 and 2; only part 1 is set here) in his collection Poland/1931, published 1974. The premise is that of a Jew, narrating in the first person, finding himself among the American Indians (Rothenberg lived on a Seneca reservation for a time), a displaced Jew among a people whose culture has become displaced from around them. Between them mistrust and sympathy go hand in hand, the narrator blending the elements of his culture with that of the Indians: "in gold mines & shaky stores/the fur trade heavy agriculture ballots bullets barbers/who threatenmy beard your hair/but patronize me/ vot am I doink here/ dis place ismaybe crazy/ has all the letters going backwards/

His "vot am i doink here," the deliberately assumed Eastern European-Yiddish accent, is both comic put-on and expression of his insecurity. Kovler in his setting carries it a step further, incorporating very naturally an ancient Hassidic chant that adds texture to the stream-of-consciousness, multi-layered meaning and perspectives of the poem.

Malgorzata Babiarz - vocals,
Andreas Kapsalis - guitar,
Marek Lichota - accordian
James Gallagher - drums

Megitza Quartet, based out of Chicago, performs energetic renditions of Roma and Eastern European folk music. Beautiful melodies and rhythmic variations on their debut album “Boleritza,” turn the listening experience into a fascinating journey.

Malgorzata Babiarz, vocalist and composer, is indeed a diverse musician. She recalls her earliest influential musical experiences witnessing firsthand the rich Gypsy culture in her mountain village and singing traditional Polish Highlanders’ melodies with her Grandmother.

Malgorzata’s expertise is revealed in her vocal flexibility, strength, and authenticity. Her repertoire includes original compositions, music from Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, South America, and also songs in Romanes – the language of the Gypsies. She truly is a versatile musician with a distinctive gift for singing.

“Fantastic voice and a unique talent.” —Roby Lakatos, Virtuoso, Gypsy Violinist

Andreas Kapsalis began playing guitar at the age of 11, coming from a musical family he was exposed to classical and world music at an early age. This instilled the discipline and a curiosity for the music of other cultures. Being primarily self taught Andreas began to gather influences from every musical style he came across such as Jazz, Greek folk music, Film Soundtracks, Rock, anything that would teach him his instrument and fuel his own musical compositions.

Andreas developed his unique style of guitar playing from overcoming a hand injury the outcome of which spawned a new compositional perspective on the guitar that blends 10 finger tapping with traditional finger style, flamenco and modern extended techniques. This allows for the polyphonous possibilities similar to that of the piano while simultaneously keeping the percussive aspects of the guitar ever present.

After years of refining his style his unique approach was discovered by Grammy Award winning Composer and Producer Jim Tullio, a former student of Aaron Copland. Tullio recorded Andreas first EP which garnered attention from such greats as Dave Brubeck and bassist for Miles Davis Foley.

In 2005 Andreas was awarded a Composer fellowship by the Sundance institute to bring his compositional style to the silver screen giving him the opportunity to put his music to picture. Andreas’ first score was to the internationally acclaimed and award winning documentary Black Gold which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006. Since his initiation into film scoring he has composed music for several award winning films. in many genres ranging from horror to dramatic thriller to political documentaries.

Marek Lichota graduated from Music School in Cracow. He won several music talent contests in Poland and in the United States. One of his achievements was a 1st place in ATG (American Teacher Guild) Contest. Button accordion also called bajan [bayan] has been his passion and an instrument of choice since he was 10 years old. He is also a very proficient pianist and bass guitar player. He can play a wide range of styles from classical, world music, jazz, through klezmer. In his spare time Mark also composes his own music. In 2004 he scored the music for the movie titled“Runaway Divas.”

Jamie Gallagher’s main focus as an artist today is to collaborate creatively with his various projects that are based in and around Chicago. Aside from doing recording sessions, national tours, and local performances, he focuses a great deal of energy on his role as an educator. He has fifteen years experience performing and recording as a drummer, and ten years as a percussion teacher, making him a well seasoned musician.

Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries of this music as an expressive art form.

New Harvey Pekar Opera, "Leave Me Alone", 31 Jan 2009

Harvey Pekar drawingLeave Me Alone!: A New Jazz Opera by 2009 JMF Artist Dan Plonsey & Harvey Pekar

Composer and saxophonist Dan Plonsey, one of our festival artists this season, priemeres Leave Me Alone!, a new jazz opera with a libretto by Harvey Pekar (American Splendor), to be performed on January 31 at Oberlin College, OH, and streamed live to an international online audience.

The story of the opera revolves around conversations between the composer and librettist held from their respective living rooms in the Bay Area and Cleveland. Dan and Harvey, the two primary interlocutors, played by themselves, engage in discussions about music, the life of the artist as householder, finding time to work, the current state of the avant garde, and the opera itself.

Please help realize this vision by watching the opera here for free at 8 PM on January 31, 2009. More information available online.
