Based on the reinterpretation of music from the southern frontier of Ukraine, the program is named for the shtetl Kalinindorf, a Jewish community destroyed by the Nazis. The work pays musical tribute, both joyful and sorrowful, to those lost lives. Varied and exciting, it is influenced by Balkan, gypsy, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Yiddish traditions, which coexisted over the centuries in vast territories along the shores of the Black Sea. The melodies are also derived from the family heritage of Klezmerata Fiorentina's founder, Igor Polesitsky.

New York Festival Of Song (NYFOS, www.nyfos.org">www.nyfos.org), co-founded and directed by pianists Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, who reinvented the song recital during the 1990 s with daring and dramatic programming (The New Yorker), announces its 21st season (2008-2009).

The company's New York City concerts begin on September 23 at the newly renovated Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center, with A Bernstein / Bolcom Celebration. The concert pays tribute to two of NYFOS s guiding lights, Leonard Bernstein and William Bolcom; Bolcom and his wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, will cap the evening with a selection of songs from their vast repertoire. The program also celebrates the ninetieth birthday of NYFOS s Founding Advisor, Leonard Bernstein, who bestowed the American premiere of his last work, Arias and Barcarolles, to the newly-formed company. Their subsequent recording of the work in 1989, with Judy Kaye and William Sharp, earned the composer a posthumous Grammy Award for Best New Composition.

Other concert programs this year include Fugitives (Nov. 18 and 20), works by composers who fled Europe during Hitler s rise to power; and Voices of the Jewish Diaspora (Feb. 10 and 12), songs in many languages from the worldwide Jewish community.

In December, 2008, Bridge Records will release an original cast recording of John Musto s Bastianello and William Bolcom s Lucrezia, the critically acclaimed one-act comic operas commissioned and premiered by NYFOS last season.

KlezmerQuerque Jewish Music Festival, Albuquerque, NM, 12-15 Feb 2009

“KLEZMERQUERQUE” Albuquerque New Mexico’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival celebrates its seventh year February 12-15, 2009 (Presidents Day weekend).
On Saturday morning, February 14th from 9:30am-11:00am the Strauss Warschauer Duo will lead “SHABBOS, MUSIC AND YIDDISH”, a hands-on workshop of Hassidic Niggunim (melodies) and Yiddish Sabbath songs for singers and instrumentalists. No previous experience necessary. All ages, levels and backgrounds welcome. Brin Ingber will teach dances from the Eastern European Jewish wedding repertoire including Rebbe Elimelech tanz and Kayzad merakdim. Classes cost $20-general and $16 for seniors, students and fixed income. From noon-2pm there will be a catered lunch. After the catered luncheon Brin Ingber will present "Why Jews Aren't Just People of the Book" with rare and historic dance illustrations and music for Jewish dance in far flung communities through the ages. Following her powerpoint presentation there will be time for questions. The price for the ‘Lunch ‘n Presentation’ is an $8-$15 suggested donation.

On Saturday afternoon from 2:15pm-3:45pm the Duo will lead “MAKING YOUR INSTRUMENT SING IN YIDDISH”, a hands-on workshop for everyone. Again, all are welcome. Price for this class is $20-general admission and $16 for seniors, students and fixed income.

On Saturday evening at 7pm Brin Ingber will perform two dances. “The Argument” gives a modern twist to the classic story of Abraham about to sacrifice his son Isaac. The dance will be accompanied by the chanting of Brin Ingber’s sister Rabbi Deborah Brin, who is also the Rabbi of Congregation Nahalat Shalom. “Roles Not Taken” a dance combining music theatre, ballet and Israeli folk dance presents a surprising view on issues of Jewish identity. The evening culminates with a concert by the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, “Dem Fideles Neshome” (The Fiddle’s Soul) and a dance party. Brin Ingber will also lead dances that she taught in her morning class. Price for this event is $18-in advance and $20-general, $18-seniors and students at the door.

The 20-piece intergenerational Nahalat Shalom Community Klezmer band will be celebrating the release of its first full length CD recorded and engineered by New Mexico’s own Manny Rettinger of Ubik sound and the sound engineer for UNM’s music department. The Community band will be playing on Friday and Saturday evenings for Klezmer dances led by Nahalat Shalom’s Yiddish dance troupe “Rikud.”

Fine Foreign Film plays the music from the classic Italian films of the 50s to present. Not your average rep band, we take the great works of Piero Piccioni, Benedetto Ghighlia, Carlo Rustichelli and more, and use it as a launching pad for a great evening of high energy improvised music.

This concert we will include the bluesy, seductive works of Alex North's score to "A Streetcar Named Desire."

"J. Edgar Klezmer" premiered to a sold-out house at Dixon Place late last year and immediately became a Time Out NY Critics Pick. The show is based on the true story of the late Dr. Adele Sicular, grandmother of Metropolitan Klezmer and Isle of Klezbos drummer/bandleader Eve Sicular. Using documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act filing, plus myriad other archival findings and family gossip, this piece investigates the dealings of the FBI and Eve's pianist/psychiatrist/activist grandma through live theater, multi-media projections, and music both original and adapted. With musical genres from klezmer to Kodaly, baroque to boogie woogie, jazz, gospel and more, the show features soprano Melissa Fogarty and fellow traveler Moe Angelos [Five Lesbian Brothers, The Builders Association theater troupe], as well as numerous bandmates in both musical and speaking roles. Directed by Jennifer Griesbach.

Cast: Pam Fleming /trumpet, flugelhorn; Melissa Fogarty /vocals; Debra Kreisberg /clarinet, sax; Shoko Nagai /piano; Eve Sicular /drums, research, granddaughter, book-lyrics-music; Moe Angelos /actor, Dr. Silverberg.

"J. Edgar Klezmer: Songs from My Grandmother's FBI Files" was supported by NYC's Department of Cultural Affairs in its premiere last fall, and will be returning to New York City later in 2009, TBA.
