THE SOVALI CONSORT

At the start of the 20th century there was a renaissance of Jewish culture in Russia. Artists such as Marc Chagall and El Lissitzky used Jewish themes in their art. Writers such as Chaim Nachman Bialik and Sholom Aleichem wrote poems and stories in Hebrew and Yiddish. The music by composers such as Joseph Achron (1886-1943), Mikhail Gnesin (1883-1957), Alexander Krein (1883-1951), Moshe Milner (1886-1953) and Alexander Veprik (1899-1958) was inspired by Jewish themes. They founded the St. Petersburg Jewish Folk Music Society in 1908. It was an unprecedented collective effort to create a Jewish national school of classical music. The movement was crushed by the Stalin regime. Mieczylaw Weinberg (1919-1996), Veniamin Basner (1925-1996) and Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) belonged to a later generation of Russian composers who were inspired by Jewish themes. World War II and the reign of terror in the Soviet Union had a deep impact on the composers. At a time when Jewish culture was taboo and open pronouncements could have fatal consequences, it was often years before their works could be performed. Some scores never left the composer’s drawers or remained buried in archives. Now, many years later, these musical jewels have been rediscovered.

Yosl Kurland, Saratoga Springs, NY, 13 Sep 2009

Yiddish Songs and Stories at Caffé Lena with Yosl Kurland
Sunday, September 13th at 3:00 pm
47 Phila Street, Saratoga Springs, NY
Tickets www.caffelena.org/calendar.htm#13a
1-800-838-3006
Information: 518-583-0022

Yosl Kurland is well known in Yiddish circles and at Caffé Lena as the lead singer, Yiddish songwriter and fiddler with the Wholesale Klezmer Band. For this solo appearance, Yosl will be performing a wider variety of material than that which he performs with the band, including liturgical music for the High Holy Days, Shabbos and Festivals; Yiddish Art Songs; Yosl's own translations of Yiddish stories, comic Yiddish vaudeville acts, and Poetry.

Whether you are Jewish or not, you can get a taste of the Jewish Holy Day season by experiencing the Yiddishe tam, the flavor of old-fashioned Ashkenazic culture with Yosl Kurland, Sunday, September 13th at 3 pm at Caffé Lena, 47 Phila Street, Saratoga Springs, NY.

Yosl Kurland is a founding member of the Wholesale Klezmer Band (since 1982), High Holy Day singer at Temple Israel of Greenfield, MA and Temple Israel of Athol, MA. He has taught Yiddish language at the National Yiddish Book Center, and has lectured on Yiddish music, dance and poetry, and Ashkenazic prayer music. His song, "The Messiah will not come until..." was the only Yiddish song selected for the 2008 Shalshelet Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music. Yosl has performed with the Wholesale Klezmer Band at the 100th anniversary of Carnegie Hall and at President Clinton's first Inaugural in 1993 and at the Linda Norris Auditorium.

A highlight of this show will be Yosl's recreation of a 1930's vaudeville piece about three High Holy Day cantors auditioning before a synagogue search committee. As always, Yosl will make the music accessible with translations, subtitles and explanations.

An engaging talk with slides and live music on the recent Yuval Ron Ensemble tour to Morocco.

Last June The Yuval Ron Ensemble completed its first peace mission tour to a Muslim country—Morocco, bringing to tears both Muslim and Jewish audiences. Hear the story from musical director Yuval Ron who will share slides and music from the musical meetings with the tribal Sufi musicians and dancers of Morocco, and the search for the disappearing Jewish life in Todra, Marakech and Fez.

The Yuval Ron Ensemble became a media sensation at the Sacred Music Festival in Fez, Morocco. CNN, National Geographic, Mundomix.com and French TV Channel 5 all focused their stories about the Fez Festival on the Yuval Ron Ensemble. See the CNN special report.

"The Sway Machinery makes the ancient modern and the mythological real." —The Village Voice

On the heels of their successful New York City events in 2007 and 2008, JDub Records presents America¹s only indie rock/Jewish cantorial music group, The Sway Machinery, bringing one of the most unique celebrations of the Jewish New Year, Hidden Melodies Revealed, a celebration of Rosh Hashanah, to Los Angeles and San Francisco for 2009. This multi-media concert event celebrates Rosh Hashanah in a presentation that is part ritual, part concert. Hidden Melodies Revealed will also include storytelling and animated films, such as a screening of Guggenheim Fellow Shawn Atkin's animated short film depicting the dawn of monotheism, The Akeidah.

Admission is FREE and an open bar reception will be held prior to each concert.

The Sway Machinery's unique musical vision re-contextualizes Ashkenazic Jewish spiritual music, the soulful vocal Cantorial style most often heard in American Jewish synagogues, into the broader spectrum of world music. The band finds inspiration for new versions of Cantorial classics in African popular music, Eastern European folk music and American blues. Their ever rotating line-up features an incredible roster of musicians for these performances; led by guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood of Balkan Beat Box, along with John Bollinger of Barbez on drums, noted tenor sax player Matt Bauder, Kelly Pratt of the Beirut and Arcade Fire horn sections (and his own acclaimed project Plan B) on trumpet, and member of The Arcade Fire and frequent Tom Waits collaborator Colin Stetson on bass saxophone. Other exciting musical guests are expected and will be announced as they are confirmed.

Rabbi Sydney Mintz of Temple Emanu-El is "thrilled to welcome The Sway Machinery's Hidden Melodies Revealed, to our historic congregation at the holiest time of the Jewish year. We are excited to be a part of the integration of liturgy, spirit, and new music that makes JDub Records so unique."

Rabbi Steve Leder of Wilshire Boulevard Temple is pleased to welcome The Sway Machinery to this historic Temple campus noting, "Along with our ambitious renovation and expansion that symbolize the reversal of the Jewish exodus from the eastern part of Los Angeles, we are pleased to host events like Hidden Melodies Revealed to connect with and welcome the young, indie, Jewish and multicultural audiences from the hip east side neighborhoods we are expanding to serve such as Hollywood, Hancock Park, Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Echo Park."

The Sway Machinery's sound stems from Lockwood's rich musical relationships with his grandfather Cantor Jacob Konigsberg, and with his mentor, the renowned blues player Carolina Slim, who fondly guided Lockwood's musical development. Konigsberg, one of the last great exponents of Cantorial singing, led Lockwood into an understanding and love of the soulful and ancient heritage of Synagogue music. Lockwood's deeply personal relationship to these two musical traditions helped him to forge a unique musical language of his own, as he learned to move from singing in his grandfather's study to playing with Carolina Slim in New York City subway stations. The Sway Machinery was borne out of this dichotomy.

Though The Sway Machinery carefully cultivates Lockwood's deeply felt relationship to his musical roots, his accomplished colleagues bring to the table the sounds of afro-beat horns, unassailable rock beats and an astutely contemporary musical sensibility. Lockwood layers the haunting notes of his Cantorial-influenced vocals over the energetic, celebratory rhythms of afro-pop, hard-hitting drums and the blues. Hidden Melodies Revealed showcases pieces based on mystical texts taken directly from the Jewish High Holiday prayers and reconfigures them in a startlingly new musical landscape. Lockwood's ambitious melding of styles results in what The Village Voice has called a most "joyful synthesis."

Blurring boundaries and connecting sounds, syncopations, rhythms and roots is central to the mission inspiring the Guy Mendilow Band’s latest CD, “Skyland.” Israeli peace songs and Sephardi canticas meet Bahian street beats and blues. Drawing from a life lived in Israel, South Africa and Brazil, where musical collaboration cuts through ancient conflict, Israeli born musician Guy Mendilow is sowing the seeds of peace with music.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Guy Mendilow Band includes world class musicians from Israel, Argentina, Japan and the United States. Or to find the group now partnering with international peacemaking organizations, such as Seeds of Peace, whose work with Palestinian and Israeli youth and adult educators helps forge the personal relationships so critical to communication and reconciliation.

"The Multi-Ethnic Music Cultures of Moldova", NYC, 21 Sep 2009

image for An-sky Institute for Jewish Culture SeriesAn-sky Institute for Jewish Culture Series

The Center for Traditional Music and Dance and the Center for Jewish History present a new three-part An-sky Institute for Jewish Culture Series, curated by ethnomusicologist Walter Zev Feldman, Ph.D. (New York University, Rubin Academy of Music, Jerusalem).

Monday, September 21: The Multi-Ethnic Music Cultures of Moldova. In a multi-media presentation, Walter Zev Feldman discusses the cultural history of this area of ethnic transformation and his recent expedition which discovered musicians of mixed ancestry (Jewish/Roma/Slavic/Moldavian) still performing traditional Jewish music in his father's hometown of Edinets. At the Center for Jewish History's Forchheimer Auditorium/Kumble Stage, 15 W. 16th Street in Manhattan. A reception will follow the event. Tickets $15, $10 for CJH and CTMD members. Reservations through Smart Tix or call 212-868-4444. (7:00 PM)

The series is named in honor of the pioneering Jewish folklorist and writer, Semyon An-sky, who led a remarkable expedition to collect Jewish folklore in Ukraine and Belorussia in 1911–1914.

Major support for CTMD's An-sky Institute for Jewish Culture was provided by the Keller-Shatanoff Foundation. Support was also provided by the Atran Foundation, and public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Folk Arts Program, a State agency, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. We thank Fumie Suzuki and Joan Roth for providing photographs for the series.
