"Night Songs from a Neighboring Village" brings together two musical traditions that have existed side by side in Ukraine for centuries, influencing each other profoundly. Join us for an evening of East European Jewish and Ukrainian music and song, presented comparatively by two of the finest performers in both traditions: internationally acclaimed Yiddish singer and klezmer multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Alpert and internationally renowned singer/composer/master of the Ukrainian bandura, Julian Kytasty.

The program draws from the rich legacy of Ukrainian folk and liturgical song, the virtuosic art of the bandura (Ukrainian harp-lute), klezmer music, Yiddish folksong, and the music of the Hasidim. A first version of "Night Songs" was created to accompany the "Tracing An-sky" exhibition at New York's Jewish Museum. Since 1993, Alpert and Kytasty have performed the program internationally as a duo, in the company of other musicians, and in an ensemble version with Brave Old World and Paris-to-Kyiv.

Jewish musicians were attracted to jazz since it's inception, and helped create a wider audience for the music and it's African American progenitors. Greg Wall, AKA "The jazz rabbi" (Hasidic New Wave, Later Prophets, Klezmerfest) and his long time associates Aaron Alexander (Midrash Mishmosh, FLKBAS, Jay Clayton,Hasidic New Wave) and Dave Richards (Neshama Carlebach, Later Prophets, the Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan), grew up listening to and playing all kinds of jazz. Their early NYC experiences were those of late night jam sessions, downtown jazz joints and apprenticeships with jazz masters. They have used their pedigree to help give birth to a pan global vision of Jewish culture.

On Saturday night Feb 13, at the Hebrew Institute of White Plains, they celebrate their roots by highlighting seminal works of their jazz heroes, reworking some classics of the original golden era of Jewish New York, and presenting original music combining the best of jazz, and Jewish and African American roots music. They are joined by virtuoso pianist Michael Cochrane (Oliver Lake, Clark Terry, Michael Brecker, Sonny Fortune).

With a diverse and accomplished lineup of Philly musicians, West Philadelphia Orchestra is an unusual and exciting ensemble in today's musical world. They began playing music from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and the klezmer traditions in late 2006, and have continued expanding and refining their sound and repertoire ever since. The band now plays original material that explores and experiments with traditional sounds, which can be heard on their 2008 release 'WPO.' As much a community as a band, WPO's performances are celebratory events. With their pounding drums and shimmering brass sounds, they inspire audiences to hold hands, dance, and sing along. Joined by trumpeter and vocalist Susan Watts, the West Philadelphia (Klezmer) Orchestra - a 6 piece ensemble with clarinetist Larry Goldfinger, trombonist Dan Blacksberg, pianist Adrian Banner, sousaphonist Jim Parker, and Gregg Mervine on drums - will play klezmer and Yiddish songs.

IN MEMORY OF AVROM SUTZKEVER: A Public Program
    Monday, February 22, 2010
    6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m.
at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research
    Admission: Free

Avrom Sutzkever was a great Yiddish poet and a hero of the Jewish people. He was born near Vilna, spent most of his youth in the city, survived the Holocaust there, and then settled in Israel. From 1949 to 1995, Sutzkever edited the prestigious Yiddish literary journal Goldene keyt.

In the wartime ghetto, Sutzkever was drafted by the Nazis to work on a team sorting books from plundered Jewish libraries, including YIVO's; the most valuable of the books were to be shipped to an institute in Germany devoted to "Jewish studies without Jews," the rest destroyed. He and some of his colleagues, who were nicknamed the "Paper Brigade," risked their lives by removing rare books from the selection and burying them. After the war, he and others returned to Vilna to dig up their cache and send
much of it to YIVO in New York.

Avrom Sutzkever died on January 20. On the occasion of his shloyshim (one-month anniversary of his death), YIVO is holding a public program to pay tribute to his memory. Participants include:

    Benjamin Harshav: Sutzkever's Poetry (Yiddish-English)
    David Fishman: Sutzkever's Life (Yiddish)
Benjamin & Barbara Harshav: poetry reading (Yiddish-English)
Boris Sandler: a few words on behalf of the family of Yiddish writers (Yiddish)
Hy Wolfe, Shane Baker & Barney Zumoff: poetry reading (Yiddish-English)
Adrienne Cooper: two songs by Sutzkever (sung in Yiddish)
Recording of Avrom Sutzkever reading one of his poems (Yiddish)
Recording of Dan Miron lecturing on Sutzkever (English)

The program is sponsored by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the Congress for Jewish Culture-CYCO, the Forverts and the Workmen's Circle.

Jewish music is exploding. Bands and labels and venues are multiplying. Rock. Hip Hop. Reggae. Punk. Klezmer. Sephardic. Choral. Chamber Music. Jazz. Chassidic-Pop. Breslov Techno. Niggunim. Pop-liturgical. Bible-gum. Beat Box. Boy Choirs. House. Socialist Yiddish Gothic. Indie. Weird hybrids. Avant-Garde experiments. Earnest devotion. But we're not immigrants clustered in tenements, in range of a local Yiddish radio station anymore. A revolution is happening but we're scattered across a big nation with no common media to connect us....except the net. Will it be enough?

This Extended Play version of Jack's recent 5 minute Ignite Ann Arbor talk will be loaded with more music, a road-map of the contemporary Jewish Music scene, a case study in social-networking Jewish Music, and the greatest Jewish song you've never heard.

Jack Zaientz is the author of Teruah, a popular Jewish music blog. Jack has been interviewed regarding Jewish music by the Israeli National Radio and was recently ranked by the Jewish Telegraphy Agency as the #36 most influential Jewish twitter.
