Depth of Field: Sephardic Identities on Screen

Tue, Dec 1, 7m
The Magnes
2121 Allston Way
Berkeley, CA

Screening of:

El Gusto
Dir. Safinez Bousbia. Documentary, UK, 2011. 88 min.

Director Safinez Bousbia discovered the story of an orchestra of Jewish and Muslim musicians torn apart by war 50 years ago, and recently reunited for an exceptional concert. The musicians share a passion they never lost: the soul of Algiers, Chaabi music. After the Algerian Independence in 1962, Jewish musicians fled to France while the Muslim musicians who remained became scattered throughout the vast city of Algiers, lost to each other and forgotten by the world. The surviving musicians formed a 42-member orchestra and called it El Gusto.

Free and open to the public.

Aaron Alexander has a long history of performing Klezmer music (and Jazz) on a high level with many of the renowned artists in the genre. He has been playing Klezmer music for over 27 years, and he finally decided to make a traditional Klezmer recording as a leader, (having appeared on dozens as a sideman). Alexander invited two of the finest young(ish) Klezmorim in the world to join him: Michael Winograd on clarinet, and Patrick Farrell on accordion. The three have some experience playing together. This recording was done by design without extensive rehearsal, in order to capture the feeling of playing “tunes we know” without overly self-conscious tentativeness.

Together they have made a CD here that reflects their deep experience with this music and has a feeling of spontanaeity and joy, the love of this music, the party music of the Jewish People of Eastern Europe and Brooklyn and Hell’s Kitchen.
Please come help us celebrate this trio’s new CD!

2nd Annual Hanukkah Extravaganza at the Outer Space featuring the Spies of the Balkans and friends
Just in time for Hanukkah!

Wednesday, December 9, 2015, 7pm (Dreydl spin-off is at 7:30)
Outer Space
295 Treadwell Street
Hamden, Connecticut

The Spies of the Balkans will be hosting our second annual Hanukkah Extravaganza featuring Klezmer, Hanukkah songs, special guests, a dreydl spinoff as well as latkes from the Kitchen and Kosher craft beer at Hamden's own Outer Space.

The Outer Space has a great menu and it’s always fun to have a dinner concert. And Steve Rodgers has told me that the latkes (which sold out early last year) will be back.

In the spirit of the season there’s no admission charge for this event (though the band may pass the hat).

The Spies of the Balkans is a musical configuration shrouded in enigma and mystery. Reputedly the group plays music from Eastern Europe with a mix of Klezmer, jazz and good grooves. Led by a mysterious shadow figure the group interprets documents known as "scores" and turns them into sound. Curious? Frightened? So is the NSA. Come hear the band that no one will admit on record to knowing anything about.

Shpilkes, Paris, France, 10 Dec 2015

For one magical musical evening, the FleytMuzik ensemble will perform selections from the Dubiecko Klezmorim, founded back in Poland by the grandfather of HPCT-CAE member Milton Frant. Conducted by Abraham Leib Frand, known as Leibish the Musician, the Dubiecko Klezmorim featured his children on the violin, viola, drums, flute, and bass. They were hired for weddings, festivals, circuses, and Purim shpils, not only in Dubiecko, but also in surrounding shtetlach.

Join Sharon Frant-Brooks for a pre-concert discussion at 7 pm. Frant-Brooks, daughter of Milton Frant, will give a personal account of her efforts to bring the sounds of her great-grandfather’s band, the Dubiecko Klezmorim, back to life in Dubiecko, Poland, the very place where the band was silenced by the Nazis in the Shoah. Open to all ticket holders at no additional charge.

Adult tickets: $25 before December 5th or $30 at the door. Student tickets: $10 before December 5th or $15 at the door. Children 12 years and younger: Free

Become a sponsor: Friends of Milton Frant and supporters of the Shirainu Concert! CONNOISSEUR - $180 includes two reserved seats to the concert and a FleytMuzik CD. DEVOTEE - $125 includes two reserved seats to the concert.

From American classical music to Broadway show tunes, Jewish-American composers defined much of American popular music in the 1920s-50s. In this lecture-concert, Orin Grossman (Fairfield University) and the artists of the Sidney Krum Concert Series explore three giants of American music and the Jewish influences on their work: Aaron Copland (1900-1990), George Gershwin (1898-1937), and Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Works performed and discussed will include Copland’s “Vitebsk,” Gershwin’s “Mischa, Yascha, Toscha, Sascha,” and Bernstein’s “I Am Easily Assimilated.”

The Sidney Krum Young Artists Concert Series is made possible by a generous gift from the Estate of Sidney Krum.

Big Yiddish Klezmer Party, Philadelphia, PA, 20 Dec 2015

Susan Lankin-Watts and Dan Blacksberg of the Community Klezmer Initiative host an evening of traditional and innovative Klezmer music focused on getting the crowd performing -- on instruments and on the dance floor. Dancing to be led by Steve Weintraub.

Sun, Dec 20, 2015, 6pm
The Rotunda
4014 Walnut St.
Philadelphia, PA

Come join in as the Community Klezmer Orchestra (led by Lankin-Watts) and the Klezmer in the Afternoon All-Stars (led by Blacksberg) rock the "hoyz" (Yiddish for "house"), setting the stage for dancing under the guidance of Steve Weintraub, the Pied Piper of Yiddish dance.

Energy and momentum around Klezmer is at an all-time high in Philadelphia. The Community Klezmer Initiative (CKI), according to founder Susan Lankin-Watts, has been "harnessing that interest and excitement through workshops that invite participation from musicians at all levels, and through public Klezmer jams that include performances, improvisation and dance parties." It's now time to celebrate a year of successful CKI programming and to "bring the joyous energy of Klezmer into West Philly, at an event during which all who love this music can delight in it together," adds Dan Blacksberg.

This all-ages event is free. No advance tickets needed!

Winter women's music with a vocal and string trio! Medieval Greek chants for Mary, Bulgarian Sephardic songs of cooking and drinking, Spanish Civil War tunes of La Pasionaria…and a singalong Union Maid at the end. Our all-genius, all-girl crew is Jewlia Eisenberg, Marika Hughes, Dana Lyn and Mazz Swift. The New Yorker describes Jewlia's music as "hilarious and touching, sweet and soulful." The Wire says we show a "dazzling display of vocal agility, wit, emotional flexibility, and imaginative depth." Show some love to the radical women in your life, this is a great date!

Lecture: Michael Wex, NYC, 23 Dec 2015

ייִדיש– דַײטש אויף צו להכעיס די דַײטשן Yiddish: German to Spite the Germans, a lecture with Michael Wex

Wednesday, December 23, 6:00pm
Mid-Manhattan Library, New York Public Library (NYPL)
455 5th Ave,
New York, New York 10016

A look at how and why Jews living in German-speaking areas turned a thoroughly Christianized language into a vehicle for Jewish ideas and values. Although Yiddish shares most of its vocabulary with German, it was never really “German.” Many innocent-looking Yiddish terms and idioms express profound opposition to the German, i.e., Christian, worldview; we’ll see how the fundamental ironies produced by such opposition contributed to the development of the characteristic Yiddish sense of humor. No knowledge of either Yiddish or German is required.
