The Amherst College Center for Russian Culture in collaboration with the Amherst College Music Department host Jewish Voices from Russia on Sunday, October 3, 2004. The event consists of a panel on Russian Jewish composers associated with the Society for Jewish Folk Music (1908-c1920); a public lecture on representation of Jews in Russian music by Richard Taruskin (UC Berkeley); and a concert of Russian Jewish music featuring the Lighthouse Chamber Players. The concert will include works by Alexander Krein, Joseph Achron, Lev Zeitlin, Sergey Prokofiev and Dimitry Shostakovich.

Superstition, music and sacred text collide in "Red Thread", a series of works by artist Jacqueline Nicholls. Embroidered red thread weaves together Hebrew text and images of the flowing movement of musicians including Brixton's Alabama 3, layering notions of individuality and the "other" in Nicholls' delicate work. Jacqueline sat on the stage and sketched the musicians as they performed. She depicts these vibrant pulsating musicians, overlaid upon the ancient written text, so that the work brims with energy and alludes to the red thread's fluttering symbolism of life in Middle Eastern culture and Kabbalah.

The MUWASHSHAH song form began its life in al-Andalus [Arab Spain] over a thousand years ago, and is now a highly respected form of classical music all over North Africa and the Arab World. In its early history the MUWASHSHAH (and its related form, the ZAJAL) also inspired the Jewish poets of the golden age of Hebrew poetry in Andalus. And they are said to have influenced all kinds of music in the "Western" world, from the Cantigas de Santa Maria to English Christmas carols.

Margot Leverett, a globally renowned clarinetist of the modern klezmer revival, teams up with virtuoso bluegrass musicians Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, fiddler Kenny Kosek, guitarist Joe Selly and bassist Marty Confurius to explore the shared musical spirit of two genres literally worlds apart. Appalachian and southern fiddle tunes by legends such as Bill Monroe meet klezmer melodies from pre-war Russia and Eastern Europe, some newly discovered, and the resulting medleys and improvisations are at once raw, funny, melancholic and footstomping. It's a meld of music like you've never heard before. This is a concert not to be missed, so mark your calendar right now.
This concert has been sanctioned as part of "Celebrate 350: Jewish Life In America, 1654-2004", a national observance through cultural events and programs marking 350 years of Jewish communal life in America. The observance kicks off in September and dates from the landing in New Amsterdam in 1654 of a small group of Jews from Recife, Brazil fleeing persecution and seeking refuge.
The Branford Folk Music Society (BFMS) sponsors the BFMS Coffeehouse, a monthly concert of folk music, September through May, at the First Congregational Church, on the green in Branford, Connecticut.

Alan Bern a reçu une formation de piano classique avant d'étudier la philosophie. Il fut ensuite maître de conférence à la Tufts University, puis au New England Conservatory of Music de Boston. Il y enseigna également l'ethnologie, la théorie et l'histoire musicales. Vers la fin des années 1960, il commença à s'intéresser à la musique klezmer. Des tournées avec le KIezmer Conservatory Band, Kapelye, Itzhak Perlman, le Sandglass Theatre, et en tant que soliste, l'amenèrent à parcourir l'Amérique du Nord, l'Europe, Israël et le Japon. À partir de 1978, il se consacra à l'accordéon et se fit connaître surtout comme co-fondateur du groupe Brave Old World en 1989, qui compte parmi les initiateurs du mouvement de reviviscence du klezmer, dont il demeure l'une des figures de proue. Sur un répertoire ancré dans la tradition musicale instrumentale yiddish, Brave Old World a constitué ce que l'on pourrait appeler la Nouvelle Musique Juive. Les musiciens réunis au sein de cette formation sont compositeurs, interprètes, enseignants, issus de la communauté musicale klezmer internationale.

Les 11 et 12 octobre, le répertoire intitulé " Lodz Program " sera consacré aux musiques du ghetto de Lodz, musiques festives, chansons de cabaret, etc. Lodz, ville ouvrière située en Pologne, accueillait une importante communauté juive. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, durant le mois d'août 1944, 73.000 juifs du ghetto furent envoyés vers les camps de concentration. Lodz abrite aujourd'hui le plus grand cimetière juif d'Europe (220 000 sépultures). La communauté juive est aujourd'hui de 300 personnes, contre 160.000 en 1939. Trois millions de juifs polonais furent assassinés par les nazis. Des lectures de textes consacrés à l'histoire d'Aristides Sousa Mendes seront associées à ces musiques.
Aristides de Sousa Mendes, consul du Portugal à Bordeaux au début de 1940, a délivré plus de 30.000 visas à des juifs (mais pas seulement) afin de leur permettre de fuir les rafles nazies. Il sera destitué par le régime de Salazar. Lecture : Alain Chaniot (Cie du Si)
Les 14 et 15 octobre, le répertoire sera consacré à la musique de la communauté juive de Shangaï, musique préservée, rarement jouée.
Le consul de Chine à Vienne en Autriche a, comme Sousa Mendes, délivré des visas afin de faciliter la fuite de nombreux juifs (cependant pas dans les mêmes proportions que le consul portugais en poste à Bordeaux).
Cette petite communauté juive, exilée à Shangaï, a préservé une musique rare, jouée à Shangaï dans les années 30-40, considérée comme une version les plus pures de la musique klezmer.
Le répertoire joué par Brave Old World comprendra des extraits de ce répertoire, ainsi que des musiques de la collection Wallenstein, de valses de Vienne (Strauss), et des musiques de compositeurs juifs (Mahler, Offenbach…). Les concerts seront entrecoupés de lectures de lettres écrites par des juifs émigrés à Shangaï à leur famille restée en Allemagne. Lecture : Dominique Garras (Cie Gardel)

Jewish musics, especially klezmer musics played in the Lodz ghetto and musics played by the Shanghaese diaspora, are the core of these residential week in Bordeaux.

Alan Bern a reçu une formation de piano classique avant d'étudier la philosophie. Il fut ensuite maître de conférence à la Tufts University, puis au New England Conservatory of Music de Boston. Il y enseigna également l'ethnologie, la théorie et l'histoire musicales. Vers la fin des années 1960, il commença à s'intéresser à la musique klezmer. Des tournées avec le KIezmer Conservatory Band, Kapelye, Itzhak Perlman, le Sandglass Theatre, et en tant que soliste, l'amenèrent à parcourir l'Amérique du Nord, l'Europe, Israël et le Japon. À partir de 1978, il se consacra à l'accordéon et se fit connaître surtout comme co-fondateur du groupe Brave Old World en 1989, qui compte parmi les initiateurs du mouvement de reviviscence du klezmer, dont il demeure l'une des figures de proue. Sur un répertoire ancré dans la tradition musicale instrumentale yiddish, Brave Old World a constitué ce que l'on pourrait appeler la Nouvelle Musique Juive. Les musiciens réunis au sein de cette formation sont compositeurs, interprètes, enseignants, issus de la communauté musicale klezmer internationale.

La résidence d'Alan Bern et du groupe Brave Old World prendra une forme particulière pendant toute cette semaine, autour de deux répertoires bien distincts de musiques juives.
Les 11 et 12 octobre, le répertoire intitulé " Lodz Program " sera consacré aux musiques du ghetto de Lodz, musiques festives, chansons de cabaret, etc. Lodz, ville ouvrière située en Pologne, accueillait une importante communauté juive. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, durant le mois d'août 1944, 73.000 juifs du ghetto furent envoyés vers les camps de concentration. Lodz abrite aujourd'hui le plus grand cimetière juif d'Europe (220 000 sépultures). La communauté juive est aujourd'hui de 300 personnes, contre 160.000 en 1939. Trois millions de juifs polonais furent assassinés par les nazis. Des lectures de textes consacrés à l'histoire d'Aristides Sousa Mendes seront associées à ces musiques.
Aristides de Sousa Mendes, consul du Portugal à Bordeaux au début de 1940, a délivré plus de 30.000 visas à des juifs (mais pas seulement) afin de leur permettre de fuir les rafles nazies. Il sera destitué par le régime de Salazar. Lecture : Alain Chaniot (Cie du Si)

Cette petite communauté juive, exilée à Shangaï, a préservé une musique rare, jouée à Shangaï dans les années 30-40, considérée comme une version les plus pures de la musique klezmer.

The event is a Torah Fund Benefit for Congregation Am Tikva. They've just acquired their first Torah scroll and are raising money to pay for it.
At 8pm, there will be a brief Havdalah service to mark the end of Shabbat. Then, we'll give a concert for about 1 1/4 hr. Finally, there will be dancing and dance instruction with Jacob Bloom (dance caller) and the band.

The unique UK Premiere of the Yuri Morozov archive contains some of the earliest cinematic representations of east European Jewish communities and more. Black and White silent films as early as 1910 depict the Jews of Ukraine and their daily lives in both narrative and documentary forms. Many of these films have never been seen outside of Ukraine and some have not been screened for over 80 years.
Merlin and Polina Shepherd represent two nations although their families come from very close geographical locations. At the end of the 19th Century, Merlin's great-grandparents emigrated from Ukraine and Romania to escape pogroms and seek a better world in the west. Polina's grandparents escaped from the Sho'ah (Holocaust) by fleeing from Kiev/Odessa to Siberia. The different and yet vital sustenance of his western Jewish upbringing and her eastern one have brought them to a unique closeness in musical, creative and spiritual terms.
Their playing acts as the perfect foil for these amazing historic documents. With their deep training, musical experience and by using tradition musical pieces and stylistically accurate new compositions, these films are magically brought back to life almost a century after their first screenings.
By transportation backwards in time with this historically accurate visual and aural experience, these two world class musicians bring their audiences forward to a deeper understanding of present and latter day Yiddishkeit.
The world premiere of this programme took place in Kiev (20th, August, 2004)

Adrienne Cooper, Yiddish song innovator, joins forces with legendary piano improviser Marilyn Lerner and violin diva, Alicia Svigals. Cooper has inspired a generation of audiences and performers of Yiddish—touring, teaching and recording at the heart of the Yiddish song revival. Lerner, a mainstay of the Vancouver and Montreal Jazz Festivals, has performed with luminaries Steve Lacy, Tito Puente, Paquito d'Rivera and Gerry Hemingway, and has just won W. Canadian Music Awards Best Jazz Recording 2004 for her Special Angel duo with guitar legend Sonny Greenwich. Svigals, considered by many to be the world's leading klezmer fiddler has worked with Itzhak Perlman, the Kronos Quartet, Tony Kushner, Eve Ensler, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.
Violinist Alicia Svigals, considered by many to be the world's leading klezmer fiddler, is a founder of the Klezmatics and of her current group, the all-female Mikveh. Alan Bern a reçu une formation de piano classique avant d'étudier la philosophie. Il fut ensuite maître de conférence à la Tufts University, puis au New England Conservatory of Music de Boston. Il y enseigna également l'ethnologie, la théorie et l'histoire musicales. Vers la fin des années 1960, il commença à s'intéresser à la musique klezmer. Des tournées avec le KIezmer Conservatory Band, Kapelye, Itzhak Perlman, le Sandglass Theatre, et en tant que soliste, l'amenèrent à parcourir l'Amérique du Nord, l'Europe, Israël et le Japon. À partir de 1978, il se consacra à l'accordéon et se fit connaître surtout comme co-fondateur du groupe Brave Old World en 1989, qui compte parmi les initiateurs du mouvement de reviviscence du klezmer, dont il demeure l'une des figures de proue. Sur un répertoire ancré dans la tradition musicale instrumentale yiddish, Brave Old World a constitué ce que l'on pourrait appeler la Nouvelle Musique Juive. Les musiciens réunis au sein de cette formation sont compositeurs, interprètes, enseignants, issus de la communauté musicale klezmer internationale.

La résidence d'Alan Bern et du groupe Brave Old World prendra une forme particulière pendant toute cette semaine, autour de deux répertoires bien distincts de musiques juives.
Les 11 et 12 octobre, le répertoire intitulé " Lodz Program " sera consacré aux musiques du ghetto de Lodz, musiques festives, chansons de cabaret, etc. Lodz, ville ouvrière située en Pologne, accueillait une importante communauté juive. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, durant le mois d'août 1944, 73.000 juifs du ghetto furent envoyés vers les camps de concentration. Lodz abrite aujourd'hui le plus grand cimetière juif d'Europe (220 000 sépultures). La communauté juive est aujourd'hui de 300 personnes, contre 160.000 en 1939. Trois millions de juifs polonais furent assassinés par les nazis. Des lectures de textes consacrés à l'histoire d'Aristides Sousa Mendes seront associées à ces musiques.
Aristides de Sousa Mendes, consul du Portugal à Bordeaux au début de 1940, a délivré plus de 30.000 visas à des juifs (mais pas seulement) afin de leur permettre de fuir les rafles nazies. Il sera destitué par le régime de Salazar. Lecture : Alain Chaniot (Cie du Si)
Les 14 et 15 octobre, le répertoire sera consacré à la musique de la communauté juive de Shangaï, musique préservée, rarement jouée.
Le consul de Chine à Vienne en Autriche a, comme Sousa Mendes, délivré des visas afin de faciliter la fuite de nombreux juifs (cependant pas dans les mêmes proportions que le consul portugais en poste à Bordeaux).
Cette petite communauté juive, exilée à Shangaï, a préservé une musique rare, jouée à Shangaï dans les années 30-40, considérée comme une version les plus pures de la musique klezmer.
Le répertoire joué par Brave Old World comprendra des extraits de ce répertoire, ainsi que des musiques de la collection Wallenstein, de valses de Vienne (Strauss), et des musiques de compositeurs juifs (Mahler, Offenbach…). Les concerts seront entrecoupés de lectures de lettres écrites par des juifs émigrés à Shangaï à leur famille restée en Allemagne. Lecture : Dominique Garras (Cie Gardel)

KlezMerovitz featuring Allan Merovitz combines the vocal talents of one of Canada's finest interpreters of traditional Jewish repertoire with a talented group of musicians whose backgrounds include the jazz, rock, folk and classical genres.
Allan Merovitz was lead singer with the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band of Toronto for eight years. He has also recorded and toured in both North America and Europe with top klezmer and Yiddish groups, including Ot Azoy of Amsterdam and the Simcha Klezmer ensemble.
The new CD features original songs by Allan Merovitz as well as some new arrangements of traditional material. Folk, jazz and worldbeat influences all find their way into the traditional klezmer compositions.
Formed less than two years ago, KlezMerovitz has performed at clubs, concerts, for CBC, the Epcor Centre and as well as for private functions and community events. The group also backs Allan Merovitz in a number of theatrical performances, including his interactive show, The Wedding Bard.

Zun mit a regn (sun and rain)—laughter through tears is part and parcel of Yiddish music. Jewish composers devoted a great deal of attention to it and so did Shostakovich.
Jewish Music Projects Foundation presents works in this style by Shostakovich (1908-1975) and his friends Weinberg (Vainberg) (1919-1996) and Veniamin Basner (1925-1996) in a series of concerts in the Netherlands.
World War Two and the reign of terror in the Soviet Union had a deep impact on the composers. They expressed themselves in their music. The music of the persecuted Jewish people was their source of inspiration - an act of courage in a period when open pronouncements could have fatal consequences. It was often years before the works could be premiered. Now these extraordinary and intense works will be performed in the Netherlands by an ensemble of specialised musicians:

Just as the classic Klezmer (the word means itinerant musician) of the nineteen twenties mixed everything they knew and heard to make their music, so the members of The Flying Bulgars bring their own broad musical experience to the band in its 21st century configuration. Leader, main composer and founder David Buchbinder (trumpet, flugelhorn) has studied with some of the most accomplished jazzmen around while breaking out as a composer of film and concert music. Daniel Barnes’ (drums) credits include Joe Sealey’s Juno award winning Africville Suite and touring with Ethiopian diva Aster Aweke. Bob Stevenson, (clarinet, bass clarinet) specializes in jazz and new music: Arraymusic and Hemisperes, and the 20 piece Klezmer Ashkenaz Orchestra. Victor Bateman (bass) re-joins the band after an extended absence. He is well known for his work with an almost infinite variety of jazz, folk, world and pop artists. Vocals are by Toronto uber-pop songstress Yvonne Tollar who lists Northern European avant jazzers and deep soul stylists among her varied influences. Finally there is a rising young star in Greg de Denus (piano) who can often be found leading jams at Toronto’s famed REX club.

If you’ve ever wandered around Montreal’s Mile End enclave you may have noticed Chassidic men making their way to schul with great big furry hats on: those are Shtreiml. So Shtreiml, New Generation Klezmer band, from Montreal. It features a blend of klezmer, gypsy, and blues giving their music a young, rootsy sound. Featured are Jason Rosenblatt (harmonica), Ariel Harrod (bass), Josh Dolgin aka SoCalled (accordion, beats) and Thierry Arsenault (drums).

In October 2003, a historic event in Amsterdam's Portuguese Synagogue took place. The pre-war synagogue choir, "Santo Serviço" was revived after 60 years of silence.
Hazzan Cardozo will lead us through his memories of singing with Santo Serviço for nearly fifteen years. Throughout the program examples of original works will be sung in the authentic pre-war settings. Directly following the program a light reception will be held in honor of Hazzan Cardozo's 90th Birthday.

WVBR's Crossing Borders to FEATURE: KLEZMER "LIVE" ON OCTOBER 30 at 8 PM.
Ithaca, NY….WVBR's live broadcast concert series "Crossing Borders" will feature the celebrated duo of clarinetist Joel Rubin and tsimbalist Pete Rushefsky in an evening of Hasidic nigunim (songs of spiritual elevation) and old-time instrumental Klezmer music which draws on the Jewish heritage of Eastern Europe on Saturday night, October 30th from 8 to 10 PM. The two-hour series, hosted by Denice Karamardian, is broadcast live from the Carriage House Café at 305 Stewart Avenue, Ithaca, and airs on 93.5FM and online at WVBR.com. The performance is open to the public and admission is $10.
Rubin, the leading klezmer clarinetist in the world today, is currently Rothman Family Visiting Lecturer in Judaic Studies at Syracuse University and Visiting Scholar at the Cornell University Society for the Humanities. He holds a P.H.D. in ethnomusicology from City University of London for his pioneering work on klezmer music and is the author of two books on the subject. Rubin studied clarinet with Richard Stolzman and Kalmen Opperman. He directs the internationally acclaimed Joel Rubin Jewish Music Ensemble as well as the Cornell University Klezmer Ensemble. He has concertized throughout Europe, North America and Asia for the past 25 years and records for Schott Wergo.
Pete Rushefsky, of New York, is one of the finest tsimbalists performing today and a leading revivalist of the tsimbl (also called 'cimbalom', an Eastern European Jewish hammered dulcimer.) One of a handful of young klezmer musicians to use field and archival research in recreating a performance style for the tsimbl, he performs and records with some of the leading performers of contemporary klezmer music including violinists Steven Greenman, Elie Rosenblatt, and Alicia Svigals (Klezmatics), flutist Adrienne Greenbaum, and vocalist/pianist Rebecca Kaplan. Rushefsky has taught on the faculties of Klezkamp and KlezKanada, and has authored an instructional book with tape entitled "The Essentials of Klezmer 5-string Banjo, Volume I."
Crossing Borders is a two hour, weekly multi-cultural live radio concert series, dedicated to presenting international, local ethnic, and local original artists, often in combination, live from the Carriage House Café. Admission is $10 at the door.
The Carriage House Café is a newly renovated 1850 carriage house that features naturally superior acoustics and whose mission is to promote multicultural interaction through entertainment, education and cuisine. The Café offers a light menu and lively entertainment.

Admission will be $15 for the night, or $10 for students. All proceeds will help benefit the Zeitgeist Gallery, a venue who has been very supportive to young artists throughout Boston and Cambridge. The show will start at 7:30, and doors will open at 7:15. I'd recommend arriving early; seating is limited.

The homeland of Eastern European Jewry was wiped out in the 1930s and 1940s, and evidence of its culture was killed. But like the history of its people, Jewish culture and arts fought to remain alive. Its music, Klezmer music, is still vibrant today, flourishing around the world. At this retreat in Canada, knows as Klezkanada, students like myself were fortunate to study with the living masters of Klezmer music. Members of world famous ensembles like the Klezmatics, Brave Old World and the Klezmer Conservatory Band taught there, amongst other legendary musicians. The draw of this cultural phenomenon brings musicians of all sorts, from all over the world to a single campsite. From this melting pot of tradition, comes 6 nights of amazing music, and the fusing of ideas between artists who would have, otherwise, never met.
Daniel Kahn, an actor/singer/accordions, violinist Cameron Freer and I were one of these conglomerates. Daniel asked us one night, "what do you hear when I play this scale?" He played. At first I just thought, 'oh the Freygish scale', the most common mode in Klezmer music. But then he played this exotic sounding scale while howling and laughing 'evil-y', while I had begun to understand where he was going with this. This music, to ears unfamiliar with Klezmer, sounds like something one would hear in a haunted house; the sounds one would hear on Halloween! That very night, with Daniel singing and playing accordion, Cameron on his violin, and myself on a synthetic church organ, came the birth of the "Rocky Hora Dybbuk Orchestra." We played one tune that night, "Dona, Dona," a famous Yiddish folk song, with howls and screams, to an amazed audience. "This is one of the most exciting things to happen to Klezmer Music," said program organizer Michael Alpert. When we were finished, we were applauded wildly. In a revelation later that night, we all agreed that we needed to do a Halloween Show.
On Sunday, October 31st, The "Rocky Hora Dybbuk Orchestra," along with 4 other bands, will perform at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge. Headlining the evening as well, will be "Khevre," a band based in Boston who has been gaining much popularity. At their last performance in September, also at the Zeitgeist Gallery, fans were huddled on the sidewalk, because of the packed venue inside. "[Khevre has] an energy, and a delight in playing together, [with] specific wonderful compositions and amazing talent, that makes one feel the way [they] would have felt to be watching the Jefferson Airplane on the tiny Matrix stage back in 1966 in San Francisco," one critic, Ari Davidow, said in a review that can be found at www.klezmershack.com.
Also on the bill will be the "Jumbo Knish Factory," hailing from Tufts University, lead by Michael Mclaughlin of ‘Naftule's Dream;' The "Harvard Folk Band," will play a soft set of Jewish and Roma material; "Smackin' the Brass," a 16 piece Balkan style brass band from the New England Conservatory, along with special guest performers.
