Kristallnacht Commemoration, NYC, Nov 5

Congregation Rodeph Sholom Commemorates Kristallnacht with
The Music of Solomon Sulzer and Louis Lewandowski

New York--Congregation Rodeph Sholom's Senior Cantor,
Rebecca Garfein, and Associate Cantor, Jennifer Frost will
commemorate Kristallnacht - the Night of Broken Glass, with
the music of renowned Viennese Cantor, Solomon Sulzer and
Berlin composer, Louis Lewandowski at 6p.m., Friday,
November 5, 2004 during Shabbat services. Also
participating is Rodeph Sholom's Organist, Dr. John
Schuder, and professional choir, augmented to twelve voices
for this special evening. The entire community is invited
to attend. The congregation is located at 7 West 83rd
Street (off Central Park West.)

For more information, please call (212) 362-8800, extension
1337.

Born in 1804, Sulzer is credited with being the
first to modernize the cantorate and one of the earliest
composers to westernize synagogue music. With Sulzer, the
title of "Cantor" was born out of a desire to be accepted
and understood by 19th century society. In fact, Sulzer
was very much a part of modern musical circles. His
closest friend and occasional collaborator was composer
Franz Schubert. Clearly heard in Sulzer's synagogue
compositions is the influence of 19th century music. As a
Cantor, Sulzer was very successful at creating a musical
bridge between the "old world" and the newly enlightened
world.

Throughout Europe, Louis Lewandowski assisted numerous
Cantors in his day, the most famous being the celebrated
Solomon Sulzer, who also composed for the Austrian and
German synagogues. Lewandowski was the first composer to
write for synagogues using organ and large choirs.

Lewandowski was born in Wreschen, Province of Posen
(that Polish district which became part of Prussia when
taken by Frederick II) on April 3, 1821.

In 1864, with the building of the majestic Oranienburger Strasse
Synagogue, Lewandowski, who had for many years worked under numerous
Cantors, became the first Music Director of this most grand
synagogue. This new synagogue was one of the first in the world
to have a pipe organ.

Sulzer's music, which up until this point had been
the standard in synagogues all over Europe, could no longer
be utilized in the same way, because it was composed for
the Orthodox prayer book. No synagogue music had been
written for organ, and so, an entirely new musical service
had to be created. Lewandowski stepped up to this sacred
task.

In 1871, Lewandowski published Kol Rinnah
U't'fillah, for the Sabbath and Festivals. This volume
included recitatives for every text in the liturgy. During
the years 1876-1882, Lewandowski composed his greatest
work, Todah V'zimrah. In this volume, he arranged the
melodies of Kol Rinnah U't'fillah for Cantor, four-part
choir, and congregational singing. Todah V'zimrah ensured
Lewandowski's lasting reputation as one of the greatest
Jewish composers to have ever lived.

Granted many honors both by the Jewish community
and the German government, Lewandowski was Honorary
President of the Cantors' Association, and became the Music
Director of all of Berlin's synagogues, a position he held
until his death in 1894.

A native of Tallahassee, Florida, Cantor Rebecca Garfein,
mezzo-soprano, is the Senior Cantor of Congregation Rodeph
Sholom in New York City, and is the first female Cantor
ever to hold this position. Cantor Garfein has appeared in
numerous recitals throughout the United States, Israel, and
Europe. In 1997, Cantor Garfein was invited to participate
in the Jewish Cultural Festival in Berlin, Germany and was
the first female Cantor to give a solo concert in the same
city her grandfather of blessed memory fled. At the 1998
Berlin Jewish Cultural Festival, she became the first
female Cantor to preside in a German synagogue, and
released a CD of the live recording of the 1997 Berlin
concert, "Sacred Chants of the Contemporary Synagogue."

Cantor Garfein has been a featured soloist with the
Ra'a'na'na Orchestra and the Zamir Chorale at the Jerusalem
Theatre in Israel and in 2001 was a soloist at the 350th
anniversary concert of the Curacao Jewish Community.

Cantor Garfein made her New York City debut with the New
York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra at Cami Hall and recently
made her Carnegie Hall debut at a concert with Dr. Ruth
Westheimer celebrating the release of Dr. Westheimer's
book, Musically Speaking.

She has been a participant in the opera program at DiCapo
Opera in New York City and at the Aspen Music Festival and
was also a participant in the Young Artists' vocal program
at the Tanglewood Music center in Massachusetts, where she
sang under John Williams.

Cantor Garfein graduated cum laude from Rice University's
Shepherd School of Music. In 1993, she received her
Master's Degree in Sacred Music and Cantorial Investiture
from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Cantor Jennifer Frost, born in Chicago, was raised
in Southern California. Her first memories of music in the
synagogue included going to services with her grandfather
and listening to him sing in the choir. Subsequently, she
herself joined the choir at Stephen S. Wise Temple in Los
Angeles, and continued to foster her love of Jewish music
under the direction of Cantor Nathan Lam. Following her
studies at the University of California at Irvine, where
she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama, Jennifer
attended Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion
where she received a Masters Degree in Sacred Music and
Cantorial Investiture. In addition to her work as a Cantor,
Cantor Frost performs with Soul on Fire, a theatrical
concert of devotional music. Having recorded their first
album, Soul on Fire is currently touring throughout the
United States.

Let's celebrate the victory of the Red Sox and the (hopeful) election of Kerry and Edwards with a spirited jam.

Hope to see you all at the November Workmen's Circle klezmer jam Sunday Nov.7- 6:30-8:30 pm

We play mainly from printed music, which we will have available in C and B-flat. We usually learn one piece by ear each time. All levels of players are welcome. There is a piano, but keyboardists are urged to bring a portable, if they have one, in case there is more than one keyboard player.

The WC is at 1762 Beacon Street in Brookline, about 5 blocks west of Washington Square, which is about 12 blocks west of Coolidge Corner, right on the Green Line Beacon Street route.

The jam is led by clarinetist Michael Winograd, whose wonderful band Khevre, has just released its first CD that will be available to buy at the jam. We recommend a contribution of $5-$10, but no one should stay away on account of money.

Art Bailey's Orkestra Popilar, Queens, NYC, Nov 9

Bi-monthly klezmer concert series in Astoria features "Art Bailey's Orkestra Popilar"

Art Bailey (accordion); Yaeko Miranda (violin); Brandon Seabrook (mandolin); Nick Cudahy (bass).

Café ACI Astoria Center of Israel Synagogue
27-35 Crescent St., Astoria
Tuesday, Nov 9, 7:30-9:30pm. Cost: $5

Art Bailey's Orkestra Popilar performs bi-monthly at ACI, transforming the synagogue's foyer into a "cafe-style" setting, complete with intimate tables and delicious desserts. The ensemble is led by accordionist and pianist Art Bailey, and features bassist Nick Cudahy, violinist Yaeko Miranda, and mandolinist Brandon Seabrook.

Bailey's concept of Jewish music owes more to Romanian string ensembles than to the more familiar clarinet and drums based klezmer bands. Reminiscent of an even earlier time in the history of recorded Jewish music, the result is fresh, unique, and thoroughly engaging. The repertoire is a mix of early 20th century Jewish fiddle pieces, original compositions, improvisation, and features material originally recorded by Romanian-born cymbalom master and Lower East Side restauranteur, Joseph Moskowitz.

Astoria Center of Israel, 27-35 Crescent Street, Astoria (Queens). We're less than 20 minutes from 59th and Lex in Manhattan! Take the N or W subway towards Queens to the 30th Avenue stop. Walk west on 30th Avenue (towards Athens Square Park) for about 4 short blocks; turn right on Crescent Street and walk a half block down on the right. Rediscovering the music of the European Jewish wedding has involved years of research with living informants, pre-Holocuast European recordings, and rare archival collections. Khevrisa is unique in its presentation of the music of the European Jewish wedding with original instrumentation, and with the traditional interaction of badkhn and klezmer. A particularly exciting innovation, created especially for tonight's program at the 92nd Street Y, is the performance of actual traditional dances from the East European Jewish wedding, including the freylakhs, sher, broygez-tants (dance of anger and reconciliation), and virtuosic solo dances. These portions of the program constitute one of the only stage performances of traditional Ashkenazic dancing in North America since the Second World War.

This program resonates with the remarkable cultural activity that arose in the Vilna Ghetto during its two years of existence under Nazi rule, from 1941 to 1943, under conditions of unimaginable deprivation and suffering. This culture is most easily accessible to us through the songs that reflected the tragic lives of the inmates but also gave them hope and courage to endure. Professor Solon Beinfeld's English-language narration will provide the context of the Yiddish songs of the Vilna Ghetto sung by Wren Ross, whose performance credits include 11 years as a cast member of "Sheer Madness."

The unique UK Premiere of the Yuri Morozov archive contains some of the earliest cinematic representations of east European Jewish communities and more. Black and White silent films as early as 1910 depict the Jews of Ukraine and their daily lives in both narrative and documentary forms. Many of these films have never been seen outside of Ukraine and some have not been screened for over 80 years.

Merlin and Polina Shepherd represent two nations although their families come from very close geographical locations. At the end of the 19th Century, Merlin's great-grandparents emigrated from Ukraine and Romania to escape pogroms and seek a better world in the west. Polina's grandparents escaped from the Sho'ah (Holocaust) by fleeing from Kiev/Odessa to Siberia. The different and yet vital sustenance of his western Jewish upbringing and her eastern one have brought them to a unique closeness in musical, creative and spiritual terms.

Their playing acts as the perfect foil for these amazing historic documents. With their deep training, musical experience and by using tradition musical pieces and stylistically accurate new compositions, these films are magically brought back to life almost a century after their first screenings.

By transportation backwards in time with this historically accurate visual and aural experience, these two world class musicians bring their audiences forward to a deeper understanding of present and latter day Yiddishkeit.

The world premiere of this programme took place in Kiev (20th, August, 2004)

This was a part of Klezfest Kiev, the leading yiddish folk arts programme in the Former Soviet Union. For more information klezmer.com.ua/events/events2003.php

Music of Bukharan Jews: The Ilyas Malayev Ensemble

WILLIAMSTOWN: The Ilyas Malayev Ensemble will perform in Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall at Williams College (second floor of the Bernhard Music Center) on Sunday, November 14, at 3:00 p.m.

The renowned ensemble performs shash maqam, the traditional classical music of the Bukharan Jews of Central Asia. Shash maqam is deeply emotional music for voice and a variety of string instruments and drums that has its roots in Persia. They have released several successful CDs and have performed throughout the U.S. and at major international world music festivals.

A NYC emigrant from Uzbekistan, Malayev was well-known in the former Soviet satellite as a vaudevillian singer and comedian, but his secret life as an amateur singer of the Persian maqam flourished at the same time.

Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach was a towering and controversial figure in contemporary Jewish music. This charismatic neo-Orthodox rabbi, dubbed "the Pied Piper of Judaism" by The Jerusalem Report, cracked open the confines of synagogue music in the 1960s and transformed services of all denominations throughout the world. He created countless catchy, uplifting liturgical melodies, many of which have become such standards that synagogue goers believe they are age-old.

  • How have various groups carried his legacy into the 21st century?
  • How have they used his musical philosophies to reinforce their own identities?

Judah M. Cohen, PhD, is Dorot Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow in the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University.

Sylvie Braitman's moving show is a musical exploration of the world of prostitution. The "oldest profession in the world" has lit the imagination of many lyricists. Abused, harassed, wasted, but also dangerous and seductive in their feminity, prostitutes continue to fascinate us. Perhaps because they trade not only sex, but also illusions, do they strike a very personal chord in each of us. In their extreme misery they point to universal longing. Sung in 5 languages, performed with flair and beauty, Les Demoiselles de Pigalle takes us into the thirties and the streets of Paris, New York, Buenos Aires, Berlin, Panama and Warsaw with unforgettable songs.

YIDDISH PIANO BAR
With Sharon Jan Bernstein

The popular Yiddish song - from Broadway, bars and the by-ways of the Old and New Worlds—comes alive at the Yiddish piano bar. Bernstein moves across musical genres, from the blues to cabaret, mixing the sacred and the secular, poetry with everyday life. This program combines performance, commentary and opportunities to sing along.

Per session: M $10 | P $12
Jewish Community Center of San Francisco
3200 California St., San Francisco

Co-sponsored with the JCCSF's Friend Center for the Arts

Sharon Jan Bernstein lived in New York, Jerusalem and Italy before moving to San Francisco. One of the most appealing new voices of Yiddish song, she has presented solo concerts in Europe, Israel and the US, and often performs in a piano bar version, notably at the Yung YiDish club in Jerusalem. She has taught Yiddish song workshops in Jerusalem and in Vilna, as part of the Vilnius Summer Yiddish Program. Her repertoire comprises less known or never performed songs, such as those kept in the manuscripts of the Noy Collection (Jerusalem) or the new compositions of Beyle Schaechter Gottesman, organized according to subtle and intriguing thematic threads. Her work has been featured on radio and TV in Israel, Italy and the US. Her "delightfully clear voice" (J. Pinnolis, jmwc.org) can be heard in the recently released Af Di Gasn Fun Der Shtot (On the streets of the city), a new collection of Yiddish songs written by Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman (2003). Since 2003, she has been the hazzan of Congregation Beth Sholom in San Francisco.

Shirim debuts 'Pincus & the Pig', Brookline, MA, Nov 21

Shirim Klezmer Orchestra will present the long-awaited Boston premiere of "Pincus & the Pig: a Klezmer Tale," their collaboration with Maurice Sendak based on "Peter & the Wolf," at the Coolidge Corner Theater (295 Harvard St., Brookline, 617-734-2500) on November 21, at 11:00am and 1:00pm. Tickets are available in advance from Concertix: 617-876-7777, www.Concertix.com. and are $18 and $12 (kids under 12). The concert will celebrate the newly releasd Tzadik CD, "Pincus & the Pig, a Klezmer Tale," which features Shirim's brilliant klezmer version of Prokofiev's score and Maurice Sendak reading his own ingenious rewrite of Prokofiev's tale. The concert will feature raconteur Fishel Bressler, of Providence, standing in for Mr. Sendak as narrator. The Coolidge will celebrate the occasion by adding Zaftig's deli favorites to their regular theater fare at the snack bar.

"Did you hear of Boychick Pincus, how he opened wide the gate and hippety-hopped over the sweet warm meadow?" So begins Maurice Sendak's charming and hilarious retelling of Prokofiev's classic children's legend "Peter and the Wolf" where Peter has become Pincus and the wolf is Chozzer Pig. Together with the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra, Sendak has created a Jewish tour de force, resonating with Yiddish humor and mysterious subtexts. Years in the making, Pincus and the Pig is a delightfully entertaining romp for the entire family, exploring the deep relationship between Jewish and Russian music, culture and story.

Shirim Klezmer Orchestra features some of Boston's finest instrumentalists: Clarinetist-bandleader Glenn Dickson is joined by trombonist David Harris, pianist Michael McLaughlin, banjo player Brandon Seabrook, drummer Eric Rosenthal, and Jim Gray on tuba.

The Klezmatics have made their name by blurring the lines of tradition with a modern sonic aesthetic. Since they erupted in New York's East Village in 1986, the KLEZMATICS have spearheaded the revival of Klezmer music, reclaimed it as a contemporary form, and thrown a great party in the process. They have managed to produce more than fifteen years of consistantly excellent recordings and performances that celebrate the ecstasy of Yiddish music. Their music is by turn wild, spiritual, provocative, reflective and danceable.

The Klezmatics worked with the Woody Guthrie Archives to compose new music for a large collection of 'lost' lyrics that Guthrie wrote addressing a wide variety of Jewish themes. The group has performed the Guthrie material in venues around the world.

Dr. Mark Slobin will review the checkered history of the American cantorate as it zigzagged from its humble origins to its heyday in the early 20th century (when cantors were "superstars") to its egalitarian reinvention today. Much of his work is based on his interviews with 125 cantors, offering eye-opening insights into the social and religious challenges cantors face in the contemporary synagogue.

Mark Slobin, PhD, is professor of music at Wesleyan University, past president of the Society for Ethnomusicology and past president of the Society for Asian Music.

Ballad of Monish premieres, Winnipeg, Canada, Nov 21

Multi-talented interpreter of Yiddish culture Marty Green introduces his latest offering in the form of a two-hour musical play, "The Ballad of Monisch", based on a classic poem by I. L. Peretz. What starts out as a Jewish retelling of the classic Faust legend quickly turns into a rollicking, satirical look at traditional Jewish attitudes towards religion, sex, and the non-Jewish world. Marty Green has taken this epic ballad and adapted it to a lively jazz-klezmer setting, interleaving his own razor-sharp English translations with the original Yiddish lyrics. Two shows only, Nov. 21 Winnipeg's Berney Theater; tickets 2 for 25.00 call 1-888-378-9273.

THE FROG AND THE WOODCUTTER: Yiddish Story, Song and Klezmer Narrations

Yiddish culture has a rich storytelling tradition. Whether told in words, sung, or expressed instrumentally, these stories provide a unique window into Jewish thought, culture and spirit. Master storyteller and Yiddish teacher Peysakh Fiszman, Deborah Strauss (violin, accordion, vocals) and Jeff Warschauer (guitar, mandolin, vocals), present an evening, in Yiddish and English, of stories, songs and klezmer music. Through gesture, translation and music, the stories come to life for listeners of all backgrounds, Yiddish and non-Yiddish speakers alike.

Pesakh Fiszman is one of the most important and beloved Yiddish teachers of our time. A native of Argentina, he received his Yiddish education from the Jewish Teachers' Seminary in Buenos Aires, Chaim Greenberg Institute in Jerusalem, and the YIVO Institute. In addition, Peysakh received his MA from the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Peysakh has taught Yiddish in Argentina, Canada, the Oxford Yiddish Summer Program in England, the Moscow State University and the Kiev Pedagogical Institute. In the U.S., he has taught at Hunter College, the State University of New York at New Paltz, the YIVO Institute, 92nd Street Y, Columbia University and the Workmen's Circle. Most recently, Peysakh has returned from a widely acclaimed story telling concert tour of Germany with the outstanding German klezmer band, Tickle In the Heart. A gifted speaker and master teacher, Peysakh uses techniques in story telling and folklore to make the spirit and beauty of Yiddish come alive.

In an evening of lecture, discussion and performance, Dr. Mark Kligman, Deborah Strauss (violin, accordion, vocals) and Jeff Warschauer (guitar, mandolin, vocals) will explore the deep connections between khazones (Eastern European Jewish cantorial music), klezmer music and Yiddish song. Using audio and video excerpts, he will focus on several of the pre-eminent exemplars of liturgical artistry and spiritual expression, including Yossele Rosenblatt and Pierre Pinchik. Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer will perform and discuss examples of cantorial recitatives, as well as stylistically related klezmer instrumental pieces and Yiddish songs.

Mark Kligman, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Jewish Musicology at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York where he teaches in the School of Sacred Music.
