Web: www.winchevskycentre.org/institutions/choir.html

The major work is Di Naye Hagode (The New Saga), a choral tone poem by Jewish-American composer Max Helfman (1901- 1963), orchestrated by Maestro Veprinsky. The work commemorates the heroic Warsaw Ghetto Uprising that began on the first night of Passover, April 19, 1943. The text is from the long narrative poem Shotns fun varshever geto (Shadows of the Warsaw Ghetto) by martyred Soviet Yiddish poet Itzik Feffer (1900-1952).

Also on the program is an eclectic mix of songs on Jewish themes in Yiddish and Hebrew. Included are a new medley of songs by the great Yiddish songwriter Avrum Goldfaden arranged by Maestro Veprinsky, choruses in Italian and Russian from Verdi’s Nabucco and Borodin’s Prince Igor, Gershwin’s Fascinating Rhythm, and a French-Canadian folksong. Solos are sung by sopranos Miriam Eskin and Belva Spiel, and bass Herman Rombouts.

As well, the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra will perform orchestral medleys of Jewish and Ukrainian songs, arranged by Maestro Veprinsky.

Rediscover the swinging film music of the legendary Marx Brothers movies with Klezmatic's reedman Matt Darriau's Ballin' the Jack. Bestowing the solos of Harpo and Chico with an avant flavor sure to make the brothers smile, their Joe’s Pub performance will feature special guest Roy Nathanson from the Jazz Passengers as MC, saxophonist and Groucho interpreter. Also with charts by band members Andy Laster on baritone sax and clarinet, Frank London on trumpet, Curtis Hasselbring on trombone, Anthony Coleman on keyboard and piano, bassist Joe Fitzgerald and George Schuller on drums.

Ballin' the Jack will also premiere a new work by Darriau, commissioned by Chamber Music America, further exploring the ensemble's interest in the roots of jazz from the American south. The new work is a multi-part suite of pieces, reinterpreting the highly expressive and unusual instrumental forms and textures of early jazz, work song and blues while allowing for new structures and contemporary improvisation. A brilliant blend of early Ellington, Jellyroll Morton, New Orleans brass bands and Creole sounds Matt Darriau and Ballin' the Jack remind us why they have become an integral part of the downtown and European jazz scenes.

"Ballin' The Jack revives these swing tunes in an ultra-modern way that makes them seem like they were just written.... A strong candidate for Jazz CD of the Year" -- All-Music Guide

the Rozhinke Retreat
Reclaiming the Cantorial Art for the 21st Century
AUGUST 21-24, 2005

Kutshers Country Club, New York

Now in its third year, the "Rozhinke Retreat" is an effort to preserve and continue the great Cantorial art tradition of yesteryear. At the turn of the Millenium, we have seen many Jewish cultural revivals: Yiddish, Klezmer... and Hazzanut is due a revival of its own. This retreat has its roots in the great Cantorial stylings of such renowned Hazzanim as Yossele Rosenblatt, David Kousevitsky, Zavel Kwartin and many others—with an emphasis not on historical examination, but rather living reproduction of an art form which is so intrinsically Jewish, and so passionate, so filled with pathos and sweetness, that it can only be described as "Rozhinke"—the sweet sound of raisins and almonds.

Svetlana's songs are creating a new bond between the Jewish communities of this world. Through her art she reawakens the best of the Jewish spirit - faith in God, respect for tradition and love the eretz Israel.

"When she sang, goose bumps ran up and down your body. The biggest disappointment at her concert was the end. For a while listeners couldn't compose themselves, demanding that she sing an encore"—"Slavyansky Bazar" (Slavic Fair), Byelorussia

Paintings by Mayer Kirshenblatt
Direction, dramaturgy by Jenny Romaine
Design: Jenny Romaine with Trudi Cohen
Story and text excerpts from They Called Me Mayer July: Painted Memories of a Jewish Childhood in Poland before the Holocaust by Mayer Kirshenblatt and Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett
Additional writing: Jenny Romaine
Soundtrack: Kenny Wollesen

Lest future generations know more about how East European Jews died than how they lived, Mayer has made it his mission to remember the world of his childhood and to record everything he can recall about his town, the people who lived there, and daily life. The paintings describe through composition, choice of subject matter and color, the life of an early 20th century Polish/Yiddish town. They are sensual, visual documents of a way of life. They are not "remnants" of a world destroyed, but "vibrants". Romaine chose to partner with Kirshenblatt precisely because, in his hands, this information was captured in LIVING color. Romaine and Kirshenblatt were commissioned to create the WHITE PAJAMAS by the French Ministry of Culture and the Festival International de Papiertheatre, Mourmelon, France with support from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture.

Performed by John Bell, Trudi Cohen, Mayer Kirshenblatt, Jennifer Miller, Jenny Romaine, Ayesha Sampson, and Kenny Wollesen. Puppet and stage construction: Jenny Romaine, Trudi Cohen, Vanessa Bergonzoli, John Bell, Mark Sussman, Alessandra Nichols, Marianna Ridgell, Gabe Levine, Hermine Ortega, and Patricia Llosa. Production associate: Ariella Wurtzel

Mayer Kirshenblatt was born in Poland in 1916 and left when he was 17 years old. With no more than seven years of schooling, he taught himself to paint at the age of 75. During the last fifteen years, he has produced more than 250 paintings and many drawings. His work is evidence of his insatiable curiosity, passion for close observation of daily life, extraordinary memory, and a creativity that blossomed late in life. Every painting tells a story and these stories, together with the paintings, are the basis for a book, They Called Me Mayer July: Painted Memories of a Jewish Childhood in Poland before the Holocaust, and exhibition. His work has been widely exhibited in solo and group shows organized by the Smithsonian Institution and the Aird Gallery, among others. A highlight of his career as an artist has been the chance to collaborate with Jennifer Romaine on transforming his paintings and stories into toy theater.

Jenny Romaine is a founding member of Great Small Works and music directs/performs in Jennifer Miller's CIRCUS AMOK. She has committed over 2 decades to the cultivation of new Yiddish culture, theater and community based performance art. She was music archivist at the YIVO Institute for 13 years and draws on diverse Yiddish primary source material to create new art with contemporary meaning. Her work rewards thought, refuses sentimentality, and delivers the energy of a rock show. In the Yiddish world she has directed community based spectacles with Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, The Ashkenaz Festival of New Yiddish Culture, Yiddishkayt LA, KlezKamp (Youth Theater Workshop), The Workmen's Circle (Purim Shpiln), Klezkanada, and others. Romaine performs and designs for the Folksbiene Yiddish Theater's hit family show, "Kids and Yiddish" and directed the " Memoirs of Glikl of Hameln" with Frank London and Adrienne Cooper. She is currently working on the BETTY BOOP SUITE with Trumpet Princess Susan Watts, and animator Mornography. She was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts artists fellowship in 1998, and a New Play Commission in Jewish Theater from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture in 2003.

Vampire Suit draws on Jay Vilnai's unique musical heritage as a Russian- Romanian-Polish descendant raised in Jerusalem around a mix of contemporary and traditional Jewish and Arab music, with a soul for rock n'roll and a BFA in jazz. Couple that with a passion for Bartok and Stravinsky and you end up with all original music that draws on all those influences to create something akin to traditional music for a generation that has so many traditions it calls his. Balkan and Middle-Eastern rhythms are prominent, backed by 20th century composing concepts and jazz improvising. Vampire Suit will be playing June 17th, at 8:00pm at Barbes, corner of 9th St. and 6th Ave. in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

KlezFest, St. Petersburg, Jun 18-22, 2005

The Center for Jewish Music of the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg is proud to announce "KlezFest St. Petersburg 2005," an international seminar on the traditional music of Eastern European Jewry, to be held June 18-22, 2005 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

For more information, please contact the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg via fax at (+7-812) 314-5117, or e-mail Alexander Frenkel.

"KlezFest St. Petersburg," now in its ninth year, is the oldest klezmer seminar in Russia. The 2005 festival will include master-classes on Yiddish folk songs and klezmer music, workshops on Yiddish folklore and Yiddish dance, lectures, concerts, and two excursions: "Jewish St. Petersburg" and "Rivers and Canals of St. Petersburg." Our staff will include world-famous musicians -- from New York, the violinist, accordion player, vocalist, ethnomusicologist and the world's leading expert on Yiddish dance, Michael Alpert; also from New York, the vocalist from the famous Klezmatics group, Lorin Sklamberg; from Berlin, the outstanding klezmer clarinetist, Christian Dawid, and others.

"KlezFest St. Petersburg," dedicated to bringing klezmer music and Yiddish culture back to the land of their birth, includes Jewish musicians from the vibrant centers of the Jewish renaissance throughout the former Soviet Union.

This year again we are pleased to announce a special program for lovers of Yiddish music and culture from other parts of the globe. We are asking for a contribution of $550. This sum will include food and lodging in St. Petersburg for 5 days and the entire seminar program, including interpreters when needed, concerts and two excursions. Participants will pay for their own transportation to St. Petersburg.

For more information, please contact the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg via fax at (+7-812) 314-5117, or e-mail Alexander Frenkel.

For advice on travel and visa arrangements, contact our American sponsor, the Jewish Community Development Fund in Russia and Ukraine, a project of the American Jewish World Service (New York), via telephone: (+1-212) 273-1642, or e-mail AJWS.

Join us at "KlezFest St. Petersburg" this summer! If you haven't been on the Neva River during White Nights with Russian klezmorim, you haven't lived!

Prof. Martin Schwartz, London, UK, Jun 22

You are invited to attend a talk by
Prof. Martin Schwartz of the University of California on the topic of
THE LARGE SHARED REPERTORY OF GREEK AND KLEZMER / YIDDISH VERNACULAR MUSICS

DATE: 6.00pm on Wednesday 22 June 2005
VENUE: Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, London WC1H 0XG
ADMISSION: Admission free. Open to all interested parties. A collection will be taken.

RESERVATIONS: All places must be reserved in advance. Please E-mail Ed Emery.

Professor Schwartz is a long-standing collector of Greek, Turkish and traditional klezmer music. In this fascinating talk he will examine the common musical heritage to be found in Greek music and klezmer music. He will introduce musical examples from early/archival recordings of rebetika and demotika, and klezmer instrumentals and Yiddish vocal music, arranged into various categories and discussed in a historical context.

This is a sampling of the results of an innovative research project that Professor Schwartz has been pursuing for over 35 years.

Martin Schwartz has been a seminal figure both in the international revival of klezmer music and in North American interest in rebetika. We are delighted to have enticed him to this side of the Atlantic to give this lecture.

His publications on music include the following collections:

  • Klezmer Music: Early Yiddish Instrumental Music, The First Recordings, 1910-1927, From the Collection of M. Schwartz. Edited by Professor Martin Schwartz and Chris Strachwitz. [1983 ] (Arhoolie-) Folkloric Records, LP/Cassette 9034. 3 pages of annotations.
  • Greek-Oriental (Smyrnaic-Rebetic) Songs and Dances, 1925-1935, From The Collection of M. Schwartz. Edited by Professor Martin Schwartz and Chris Strachwitz. (Arhoolie-) Folkloric LP 9033. 3 pages of annotations.
  • Greek-Oriental Rebetica: Songs and Dances in the Asia Minor Style, 1911-1937. (Arhoolie-) Folkloric CD/Cassette. (Some selections repeated from 1983 LP above, with substantial expansion of material, and new 24- page booklet of history, personnel notes, literal and poetic translations by M.S.) [1990]
  • Yikhes: Fruehe Klezmer Aufnahmen aus der Sammlung von Prof. Martin Schwartz. Trikont (Germany) CD US 0179 (with contributions to 25-page booklet; selections reproduced for the first time).
  • Klezmer Music: Early Yiddish Instrumental Music, 1908-1927, From the Collection of Dr. Martin Schwartz. With (22 pp. of) annotation by Martin Schwartz. Arhoolie-Folkloric CD 7034. [1997]

This seminar is a joint venture by the Institute of Rebetology [London] and the Jewish Music Institute [SOAS], as part of the Rebetiko Summer School (SOAS, 22-25 June 2006).

It is organised in partnership with "Greece in Britain" (www.greeceinbritain.org.uk), a nationwide series of events presented by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.

borscht series logoThis event kicks off our new series, BORSCHT! showcasing DJ's, MC's and Slam Poets exploring their Jewish heritage with cutting edge, hip hop style. It's Beat Culture with Beet Flavah!

MC Socalled, aka Josh Dolgin, is an uber-nerd, Yiddophile and part time Klezmer accordionist who makes curiously fresh beats. His symphony of hip-hop beats and old Jewish record samples, centered around the Passover Seder, became the basis of THE SO CALLED SEDER: A HIP HOP HAGGADAH, a CD with cameos by Wu Tang Clan's Killa Priest, Matisyahu, Mr. Bungle's Trevor Dunn, David Krakauer and Susan Hoffman Watts.

Socalled now now hits the road with his beats and old Jewish LP samples to which he adds live klezmer musicians into the mix for a party sound with mad Yiddish flavah!

Socalled has been featured in publications like the Forward, and is set to be profiled in the New York Times Arts section this month.

Human Beat Box Yuri Lane will set the scene with his one-man one-mic magic and unreal beat technique.
