Shirim Klezmer Orchestra, one of the country’s top klezmer orchestras, will bring their traditional Jewish jazz sound to Riverdale as part of the birthday celebration/fundraiser/ dance for Congregation Tehillah, a socially conscious synagogue based in Riverdale that was founded five years ago.

Shirim, based in Boston, is considered to be one of the top klezmer orchestras in the country. Their toe-tapping arrangements of classic klezmer tunes and ingenious takes on classical composers such as Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Satie have been featured in films, on radio, and at colleges, concert halls, and weddings across the country. Billboard magazine awarded them a critic’s choice and their album Klezmer Nutcracker has become an annual program on National Public Radio.

Many of the musicians that will play at the Tehillah party are also members of Naftule’s Dream, a jazz/klezmer ensemble that has been breaking down the barriers of traditional klezmer music. Combining klezmer with modern classical, freely improvised rock fusion, and fiery improvisation, Naftule’s Dream is "without a doubt the most startlingly original, audacious music I've heard," according to Bill Milkowski of Jazz Times.

Shirim will play two dance/music sets between 9 and 11:30 pm. The concert/fundraiser is open to the public. (Doors open at 8:30 pm) Other events will include a silent auction and a dessert tasting (free with admission). Tickets for the party are $18 each and can be purchased in advance through Congregation Tehillah or at the door. Y-Love (Yitz Jordan) is an MC unlike any other. He is a black convert into the Bostener sect of chassidus (the mystical branch of Orthodox Judaism). He is among the most innovative freestylers on the scene, weaving seamless polyglot rhymes in English, Arabic, Yiddish, and Hebrew. Most unique is Y-Love's revival of Aramaic, the ancient language used to discuss Jewish Law. With each word he spits in the tongue of the Talmud, Y-Love breathes new life into Hasidism, and hip-hop, one beat at a time.

Music from Romania and a few other places...

Art Bailey's Orkestra Popilar is a quintet consisting of accordion, two
violins, mandolin and bass that highlights both well-known and more obscure
klezmer tunes, as well as Bailey's own original compositions. The
repertoire is a mix of early 20th century Jewish fiddle pieces, original
compositions, improvisation, and features material originally recorded by
Romanian-born cymbalom master and Lower East Side restaurateur, Joseph
Moskowitz. Reminiscent of an earlier time in the history of recorded Jewish
music, the result is fresh, unique, and thoroughly engaging.

JazzArtSigns features a group of world-class jazz musicians, an improvisational painter, American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters, a live audio describer and text captioner, as well as program information in Braille, large print and on tape. What makes this event groundbreaking is that everyone involved - the band, ASL interpreters and painter - trade fours and improvise.
WHEN JazzArtSIgns Concert Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wheelock Family
/WHERE: Theatre, 200 The Riverway, Boston.

TICKETS: $20; $10 students. Voice: 617-879-2300 * TTY: 617-879-2150.

PERFORMERS: Lisa Thorson, vocals; Cercie Miller, saxophones; Doug Johnson, piano; David Clark, bass; George Schuller, drums; Nancy Ostrovsky, improvisational painter; Jody Steiner and Misha Derissaint, ASL interpreters; Vince Lombardi, audio describer; and Don DePew of The Caption Coalition.

WHY: "Access to the arts and culture is still a rarity for many people with disabilities," says VSA arts of Massachusetts' director Charlie Washburn. "Rarest of all are integrated events that make the artistic product available and accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities. JazzArtSigns is a groundbreaking event because it provides people with and without disabilities the opportunity to interact with art and music from a variety of perspectives so that they literally see, hear and feel music as it is being performed."

JazzArtSigns creator Thorson, a wheelchair user, comments on her artistic vision. "Through JazzArtSigns I hope to inspire new mainstream artistic projects that will take a holistic view of access to the arts - one where access is an element in the creative process rather than an add-on that restricts creativity. With JazzArtSigns, the ASL interpreter and painter trade fours with the band and everyone improvises. This is what makes this event so unique."

PRESENTERS: VSA arts of Massachusetts and Wheelock Family Theatre. Each organization is celebrating its 25th Anniversary Season.

WORKSHOPS VSA arts of Massachusetts is sponsoring workshops for students and presenters in jazz and painting improvisation, universal design in the arts and audience development. These will encourage community building and give everyone a look at the future of cultural access. A complete schedule of workshops will be available soon.

FUNDING: JazzArtSigns was developed in collaboration with VSA Arts of Massachusetts' National Cultural Arts Initiative with support from the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). JazzArtSigns is also supported by Berklee College of Music's Faculty Fellowship Program, and the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission.

The incomparable Andrew Stern is once again filling in on the guitar chair, (while Brandon sips tea in some Viennese Coffee shop in the old world.) Please come join us as we continue to work up new repertoire and "remap" the old.

Naftule's Dream has been universally recognized for intense concert performances
which draw on elements of traditional Jewish klezmer music, hardcore rock and free
jazz with compositional brilliance and virtuosic execution. The "deep emotional
resonance" which marks their live performances has made them a must-see on the
Boston scene and has won them converts on their travels through Europe as well as
the strongholds of new music in New York and Chicago.

Naftule's Dream features musicians from a diverse list of bands prominent on the
local music scene including and Jim Gray (tuba), Michael McLaughlin (accordion) ,
Gary Bohan(trumpet); Eric Rosenthal (drums), Andrew Stern (guitar) and
bandleader/clarinetist Glenn Dickson.

"(Naftule's Dream) stretch the limits of densely composed and then freely jammed-out
music of deep emotional resonance. It's a crazy-ass circus one minute, a funeral
procession another, and everything in between the rest of the time." -Richard Gehr,
The Villiage Voice

"This is without a doubt the most startlingly original, audacious music I've
heard. What else can you say about a band that combines klezmer music and free jazz
with feedback guitar into an organic, fully realized whole? It's a remarkable
balancing act of discipline and unabashed noise, technical brilliance and a
completely contrary punk/no-wave aesthetic... Imagine Albert Mangelsdorf, Ivo
Papasov, Jimi Hendrix, and Ran Blake jamming with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band at a
Hassidic wedding and you'll get a piece of the idiosyncratic picture here." -Bill

‘The genial maestro of North African swing’ Songlines

Maurice El Medioni is the living legend of Oriental piano. Now 77, the charismatic charmer from Oran, the home of rai music, still mixes an evocative cocktail of Cuban rhythms, French chic and Oriental mellowness. The swinging melodies rekindle the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the Oran of the past, when it was a sparkling melting pot of religions and cultures. His latest release Descarga Oriental takes the Cuban-Jewish theme even further, collaborating with eclectic New York based composer and drummer, Roberto Rodriguez.

‘I’ve always loved the way Maurice plays. He represents the times when music was pure and there was no war between Jews and Arabs, when we met to make music and share things.’ Khaled

Sway Machinery celebrate Purim, NYC, Mar 13

Come celebrate Purim, the Jewish carnival of role reversal, with us at Makor. It's going to be a wild evening, even if we are on the upper west side.

The Sway Machinery (with the Antibalas horn section)
live at Makor
(35 W 67th Street bet Central Park West and Columbus Ave)

We start at 10PM but there will be a Meguillah reading at 7:30 followed by an open bar (8:30-9:30) and then a comedy show featuring writers from the Daily Show.

Tickets cost $25 so make sure to come early and take advantage of the open bar!!! for directions and details visit makor.org

"Jeremiah Lockwood’s remarkably accomplished, frankly fascinating guitar work and Tomer Tzur’s limber syncopations combine with influences from the Sahara to the shtetl to the Delta (believe it) to make Sway Machinery consistently exciting and emotionally rewarding as well. Here they team up with friends from Antibalas for an exploration of a genre perhaps best labeled Jewish soul."—Pamela Grossman, The Village Voice

"Last Sunday I went to see Jeremiah Lockwood's new project: Sway Machinery with the horn section of Antibalas. This was their second show together. I will not exaggerate one bit if I tell you that this was the best Jewish music gig that I've ever been to, in my whole life. They played at The Stone, and at the end of the performance, every single person in the audience stood up and clapped, stomped, yelled for a long, long time."—Jake Marmer, Mimaamakim.org

Zhok Therapy, Brunswick, ME, Mar 24

Zhok Therapy, the rebellious child of the Casco Bay Tummlers, will be returning to the Little Dog Coffee Shop, 87 Maine St. in Brunswick, Friday, March 24. We'll be playing from 7:00 - 9:00.

We'll be back with pieces highlighting the improvisational skills of the band. Our inspiration for this will be original compositions and traditional Jewish, Roma, Balkan and Middle Eastern melodies. We'll also be doing some of our classic klezmer repertoire. Last month there was quite a bit of dancing going on, too, and we expect that will be the case this time as well.

The lineup for this event is Hayes Porterfield, percussion, Carl Dimow on flutes and guitars, Julie Goell, bass and vocals and Steve Gruverman, clarinet and sax.

There's no cover charge so we hope you'll stop by to enjoy a slightly different side of the band as well as try some of the Little Dog's goodies. And if you don't have a copy of our new CD, Journey, we'll have them for sale.

For more information you can contact the Little Dog at 721-9500.

Vampire Suit, Brooklyn, NYC, Mar 24

Vampire Suit is excited to be playing again at the Tea Lounge, part of their series of exciting contemporary improvised music. The performance will take place on March 24th, at 9:00pm. The Tea Lounge is located at 837 Union St., Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The music has enduring beauty that touches on the heart of the Middle East's musical culture while exhibiting western flair. Open improvisations and the spirit of the belly dance coexist, encouraging the traditional undulated hip movements as a supplement to the solid instrumentation.... -Frank Rubolino Cadence Magazine

Vampire Suit draws on Jay Vilnai's unique musical heritage as a Russian-Romanian-Polish descendant raised in Jerusalem around a mix of contemporary and traditional Jewish and Arab music, with a soul for rock n'roll and a BFA in jazz. Couple that with a passion for Bartok and Stravinsky and you end up with all original music that draws on all those influences to create something akin to traditional music for a generation that hails from so many traditions. Balkan and Middle-Eastern rhythms are prominent, backed by 20th century composing concepts and jazz improvising.

'Vilnai and his vampires get high marks for their utter unpredictability from track to track, their sheer joy they get from and give to the music and the various textures and sounds that emerge.' - Budd Kopman, All About Jazz

The result is a highly personal musical texture that takes you from the tribal dances of North Africa to the marshes of the Balkans. A musical journey that is at once personal and global, music that is at the same time unmistakably modern, yet feels old and familiar.

'If Bram Stoker's imaginary Transylvania had a jazz scene, the music might sound something like this.' -Jazz Review
