Monday, January 10, 8:00pm

155 Varick St
New York, NY

Known in Israel by her given name Achinoam Nini, Noa is Israel's leading international concert and recording artist. Born in Tel- Aviv in 1969, Noa lived in NYC from age 2 until her return to Israel alone at the age of 17. Her family is originally from Yemen. After serving the mandatory two years in the Israeli Army in a military entertainment unit, Noa studied music at the Rimon School where she met her long-time partner and collaborator Gil Dor.

Noa's strongest influences come from the singer-songwriters of the 60s, like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. These musical and lyrical sensibilities, combined with Noa's Yemenite roots and Gil Dor's strong background in Jazz, Classical and Rock, have created Noa and Gil's unique sound, manifested in hundreds of songs written and performed together. Noa plays percussion, guitar and piano. She is married to Dr. Asher Barak, they have two children, Ayehli and Enea, and live in Israel.

Daniel Kahn
Berlin-based Daniel Kahn is at the forefront of new yiddish song. With a knack for the ironic, Daniel concocts a mixture of Klezmer, radical Yiddish song, political cabaret and punk folk, kept together by his amazing abilities as a songwriter, translator and performer; telling stories of outrageous incidents, poetically dark, tragically humorous and politically incorrect. http://www.myspace.com/thepaintedbird

Adam Stotland
Singer and guitarist Adam Stotland has created a unique voice for himself within the Jewish music world. His debut album "Maagal" fuses American roots and bluegrass with traditional Jewish modes, melodies and text. The Michael Winograd Klezmer Trio (Michael Winograd on clarinet, Patrick Farrell on accordion and Benjy Fox-Rosen on bass) features three of the top, young musicians playing Klezmer music in New York today. Blending traditional Yiddish songs, and new compositions with chamber-like improvisations and spontaneous arrangements, this ensemble creates a unique approach to Klezmer music, and a fresh listening experience for their audience.

“Perhaps the leading voice of the younger generation of performers and composers within Klezmer, Yiddish and new Jewish music" —Dr. Joel Rubin, ethnomusicologist and clarinetist

“An unusual but intriguing ethnic amalgam; one that expands upon from both contemporary and historical sources.” —Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide

“One of the most exciting young improvisers working the crossroads of jazz and world music!” —Aaron Alexander, drummer and all around good guy

Eyal Maoz and Asaf Sirkis, London, UK, 15 Jauary 2011

Eyal Maoz (NYC, Tzadik) and Asaf Sirkis Duet - Elementary Dialogues (Ayler Records) - LIVE!
date: January 15, Saturday at 8:30 - 10 PM
fee: 5 pounds
location: Cafe Posk - London
website: host.quksdns4.net
address: JazzCafe POSK
238-246 King Street

Telephone: 44 (0)208 7411940

A rare performance in the UK: Eyal Maoz and Asaf Sirkis share a long history of collaboration. Beginning at
elementary school in their hometown of Rehovot, Israel, their friendship and musical association has continued through many years, and they have since become main stays of the creative music scenes of London (Sirkis) and New York (Maoz). A huge plethora of influences and experiences comes to creative fruition in their duo. Combining composition and improvisation, their intuitive rapport and mutual understanding guides the way through a musical conversation full of unexpected twists and turns and sudden bursts of colour and energy, yet never losing its emotional depth and logical coherence. The Maoz-Sirkis duet brings straight-up experimentation to the traditional concept of jazz, blending both composed and improvised music to create an interesting and inventive whole.

style, guitar-drums format." -Glenn Astarita , All About

Jews and Sufis: A Shared Musical Tradition
Musical Performance by Dunya and Panel Discussion

January 17, 7:30pm Congregation Beth El, Sudbury

Beth El of Sudbury is pleased to host JEWS AND SUFIS: A Shared Musical Tradition on Monday evening January 17 at 7:30. The evening’s program will include a panel discussion and concert exploring the historical interaction of Jews and Muslim mystics in Turkey.

A panel of scholars led by Dr. Edwin Seroussi, director of the Jewish Music Research Center in Jerusalem, will speak on cultural, historical, religious and musical aspects of Jewish-Sufi collaborations in Turkey from the 16th to the 20th centuries, followed by a dialogue with the audience. The program continues with a concert by Dunya, an ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists performing examples of Turkish Maftirim (Hebrew sacred poetry set to Ottoman sacred and secular music), Sufi devotional music and improvisations.

From the earliest days of Islam, some Muslims have been attracted to mystical interpretations of their religion. In Turkey, at least since the thirteenth century, Islamic mysticism has been expressed through participation in Sufi brotherhoods that serve as centers of spiritual and social life.

Similarly, mysticism and mystical experiences have been a part of Judaism since the earliest days. Examining the mystical aspects of both the Jewish and Muslim cultures can serve as a useful platform for exploring everyday interconnections among the communities.

The program, which is free and open to the public, is being sponsored Beth El’s Cantor’s Fund and Dunya www.dunyainc.org. For more information contact Congregation Beth El at 978-443-9622, or www.bethelsudbury.org.

Fleytmusik with Adrianne Greenbaum & Pete Rushevsky, 6th Street Synagogue, NYC, 18 January 2011

Prior to the existence of the larger klezmer ensemble or kapelye that included brass and clarinets, the flute – a popular instrument of all varieties throughout world history – was often part of the smaller klezmer band; as one of the quieter instruments allowed in religious settings, it was an obvious partner with the violin and cimbalom. Early photos of larger bands show one or more flutes. These flutes were generally of the multi-keyed variety, a few Boehm-system, but mostly simple-system and/or what we now sometimes refer to as transitional.

Flutes played an important role taking the high melodic lines and fills in the early American bands of Art Shryer, Harry Kandel, and Abe Schwartz, to name but a few. Shloymke Kosch and Israel Chazin, employing exemplary tones and technical facility, are among the unfortunately all-too-few recorded flute soloists.

Adrianne performs on vintage wood instruments, returning the flute to its rightful place in the traditional small klezmer ensemble.

Blurring boundaries and connecting sounds, syncopations, rhythms and roots is central to the mission inspiring the Guy Mendilow Band. Israeli peace songs and Sephardi canticas meet Bahian street beats and blues. Drawing from a life lived in Israel, South Africa and Brazil, where musical collaboration cuts through ancient conflict, Israeli born musician Guy Mendilow is sowing the seeds of peace with music.

It's no surprise, then, that the Guy Mendilow Band includes world class musicians from Israel, Argentina, Japan and the United States. Or to find the group now partnering with international peacemaking organizations, such as Seeds of Peace, whose work with Palestinian and Israeli youth and adult educators helps forge the personal relationships so critical to communication and reconciliation.

“A Yiddish Winterreise: Elegy for a Vanished World”, Maidenhead, UK, 27 Jan 2011

“A Yiddish Winterreise: Elegy for a Vanished World”
Holocaust Memorial Day, 27 January 2011
Norden Farm Centre for the Arts/a>, Maidenhead, UK

This highly acclaimed sequence of songs from the Yiddish repertoire recreates the original, Schubertian journey in a Holocaust context. The singer reflects on the life and world he has just seen destroyed as he flees the Vilna ghetto. "Half of them are arranged by the superb pianist Alexander Knapp, an expert on Jewish music... Glanville was masterly in sustaining its technical and emotional demands" - Opera Now

Mark Glanville - bass-baritone
Alexander Knapp - piano

Claire Dickson, Cambridge, MA, 29 Jan 2011

Claire Dickson and her trio.
Jan. 29, 3:30pm
Club Passim, 47 Palmer St., Cambridge, MA (617) 492-5300
Tickets: $12/ $10

www.myspace.com/clairedickson

Jazz vocalist Claire Dickson turns 14 this month and celebrates with an afternoon show at Club Passim on Jan. 29, 3:30pm. Winner of the national Downbeat Magazine Student Jazz Award for Junior High School jazz vocals, Claire wants more young people to get into jazz and hopes that families will be able to come to this special afternoon show. Her trio is Michael McLaughlin, piano; Greg Loughman, bass; and Eric Rosenthal, drums. Claire is a remarkable vocalist, regardless of age, and has been turning heads with gigs at Ryles, Amazing Things Arts Center, the Lily Pad and at Jordan Hall, where Ran Blake invited her to sing on his Chabrol Noir Concert in November.

Claire emerged on the Boston jazz scene at the age of 12 with an astonishing ability to scat and reinterpret classic jazz, bop and post-bop material on a level far beyond her years. But Club Passim has been a touchstone in her performing life—she sang her first solo there when she was 3, with the Family Folk Chorale, was the warm-up act for the Von Trapp singers there when she was 5, and performed her first jazz publicly there at an open mic when she was 12.

Claire is set to release her first CD later this winter, “Scattin Doll,” which will feature the material that garnered her the Downbeat Jazz award. Recorded when she was 12 and 13, she effortlessly spins off tunes by Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Gershwin, and others, material that almost any singer would find daunting. But, as the title implies, she more than just sings the tunes, she has emerged as a remarkable improviser and reinterpreter, exploring territory where most singers never go.

Claire will be performing with pianist Michael McLaughlin, composer and teacher at Tufts University who has performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival, New York Jazz Festival and the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival with Naftule’s Dream; drummer Eric Rosenthal, another Naftule’s Dream member who has also performed with artists as diverse as Either Orchestra and Anthony Braxton: and bassist Greg Loughman, who has performed with Curtis Fuller, Sheila Jordan, and Ray Santisi.

“Claire is a young lady with a natural affinity for improvisation and an unspoiled joy in her music making. I look forward to following her development as a musician.” @mdash;Joe Mulholland, jazz pianist & Chair of the Harmony Dept. at Berklee College of Music
