The Kadya Project: Voices of the Yiddish Fidl

Wednesday, April 3 at 7 PM
Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring
247 West 37th Street, NYC

Three phenomenal women musicians join together in an original collaboration inspired by the music of great traditional Yiddish violinists and the poetry of acclaimed Yiddish writer Kadya Molodowsky (1894-1975). The Kadya Project weaves Molodowsky's poetry with the eloquent Yiddish violin, erasing boundaries, and creating a world where traditional musical materials are also an expression of women's voices—lyrical, lively and thoroughly contemporary.

Featuring Keryn Kleiman, Abigale Reisman and Jeff Warschauer, guitar, mandolin and voice, Adam Moss, violin, and Esther Gottesman, readings

Yom Hashoah Commemoration w/Shir Madness, 6 Apr, 2013

A Musical World Recaptured: Klezmer and Yiddish Music Before the Holocaust
A Concert and Commemoration to Benefit the Vilna Shul,
Boston’s Center for Jewish Culture

Featuring Shir Madness Klezmer Band.

Saturday, April 6, 2013, 7:30 pm
Vilna Shul
18 Phillips Street,
Boston, MA

Tix: $18, $12 for students and seniors.

The rich and vibrant world of Yiddish music, like European Jewry itself, seemed nearly destroyed in the Holocaust, but the legacy of Yiddish music has not been lost. As we commemorate Yom HaShoah this year, we will also celebrate the living heritage of the music that has survived and now thrives again.

From the folk dances that became klezmer wedding staples, to Yiddish theatre tunes, to songs of resistance and of the Jewish labor movement, we will sing and play Jewish music—in remembrance of those we lost, and in celebration of a living tradition that we are passing to future generations.

Moshe Bonen & HaTaklitim, NYC, 7 Apr 2013

Every Sunday Morning, combining live music and food in a fresh, cultural environment, City Winery's Klezmer brunch series pairs some of the greatest musicians in the world with delicious lox, bagels and other tasty fare on Sunday mornings from 11am to 2pm. General Admission: $10 / Children Under 13 - Free
City Winery
155 Varick Street
New York, New York 10013

Warm, richly textured, and wholly heartfelt, HaTaklitim is the hot new caramel dessert of classic Israeli cover music of the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

Led by the sensitive and talented Moshe Bonen, HaTaklitim transports the audience to simpler times, before spotify and wifi, when music was played on a hi-fi stereo and the songs told real stories. Moshe opens his heart, and his vast knowledge base from his Galatz and Galgalatz radio days, and each show comes to life with anecdotes, fun Hebrew music trivia, and of course superb sound.

HaTaklitim features a talented group of Israeli musicians: Ziv Shalev on Guitar, Ofer Levy on Drums, David Segal on Bass, Shy Florence on keyboard, and Mika Hary's beautiful vocals.

Cookie Segelstein and Joshua Horowitz in performance with Joel Rubin and as guest artists with the UVA Klezmer Ensemble

Thursday, April 25, 2013, 8:00pm
Old Cabell Auditorium
University of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA

The first part of the concert will feature a trio performance by Segelstein, Horowitz, and Rubin. From 1992-94, the acclaimed duo Rubin & Horowitz performed throughout Europe. Their pioneering CD, Bessarabian Symphony: Early Jewish Instrumental Music, is credited with having initiated the historically-informed performance practice movement in klezmer music. It was called “very pure ... authoritative” by the Wall Street Journal, and “a major document of the so-called ‘klezmer revival’” in the journal, Ethnomusicology. This will be their first joint performance since 1994 and the first performance as a trio with Cookie Segelstein. After intermission, the trio will be joined by the UVA Klezmer Ensemble in a performance of Segelstein’s and Horowitz’s repertoire.

Tickets for the Klezmer Ensemble performance are $10 for adults and $5 for students. UVA students may request one complimentary ticket up until midnight prior to the concert.

"The Legacy of Lazar Weiner", Los Angeles, CA, 26 Apr, 2013

The Legacy Of Lazar Weiner
Friday, April 26, 2:00 - 5:30 pm
Popper Theater
UCLA

As Jewish music confronted modernity in the 20th century, European composers created musical settings of exquisite Yiddish poetry, guided by the spirit of their nineteenth century German and French musical ancestors. Composer Lazar Weiner (1897-1982) is remembered as a giant of the Yiddish art song genre and is also remembered as the collaborator (and brother-in-law of LA-based Yiddish poet and playwright Peretz Hirshbein). Weiner's son, Yehudi Wyner, is the greatest living authority of his repertoire, which covers a 60-year span of creative work.

A composer in his own right, Wyner chaired the composition faculty at Yale University for 15 years and was the recipient of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Assisting Prof. Wyner is Roslyn Barak, a recognized interpreter of Lazar Weiner's Yidishe lider. Ms. Barak is also the cantor at Temple Emanu-El, San Francisco's oldest synagogue.

Admission to this event is free, but please E-mail RSVP to the UCLA Music Department if you plan to attend.

Friday, April 26, 8:15 pm
Adat Ari El
12020 Burbank Blvd.,
Valley Village

Roslyn Barak and Cantor Ira Bigeleisen will be joined by pianist Yehudi Wyner in a performance of Lazar Weiner's songs. The concert and conversation with Mr. Wyner will follow the service and dinner.

Admission: No admission charge for the service and concert;
$20 for Dinner at 7:15 pm.

Inna Barmash, "Songs of Bert Meyers", San Diego, 30 Apr, 2013

Inna Barmash
"Songs of Bert Meyers" premiere in San Diego

Art of Elan, the fresh, inventive chamber music series in San Diego run by Kate Hatmaker and Demarre McGill, has invited me back to sing a new song cycle composed by Ljova and commissioned by the series. It is a cycle of four songs, set to texts by the late American poet Bert Meyers. It's been pure joy to learn the songs in the past weeks (by now even our kids know some of the catchier moments!), and I'm looking forward to rehearsing and singing with the ensemble this weekend at the San Diego Museum of Art. A few years ago, I had the great pleasure of performing Berio's Folk Songs in the Art of Elan series, and I am supremely grateful to Kate & Demarre for challenging me to conquer amazing and difficult music. Info about the concert below - pass along the info to your San Diego friends -
