Judith Cohen in Afghan Children's benefit, Toronto, Canada, Nov 17

Tonight is "Happy birthday Mullah Nasruddin", a benefit for Afghan children's literacy (nnd including Afghan nibbles, I'm told.) I'll be singing and also telling Djohá stories in Judeo-Spanish; Georges Sawa and his gorup will be playing, members of the Toronto Storytelling School will be telling Nasruddin stories, the Bierdos are on the programme (no idea), and there is a short "happy birthday Mullah Nasruddin" film. It's at the Yoga Sanctuary in Toronto, downtown, 2 College Street, above the Starbucks at College & Yonge, 8 pm-11 pm. Oh, I'll also be calling the audience in from the Milling Around part of the evening by playing three-holed pipe and tabor.

To communicate the stories of the Sephardic ballads I've chosen - trickster themes to reflect the Djohá / Nasruddin theme of the evening , I will be using my new ,"POWERofPOINTing" presentation, which features my utter, abysmal lack of drawing ability mediated by the high tech of newsprint paper and cheap magic markers.

Mizrahi Piyutim: Middle Eastern Prayer Poetry
Join Galeet Dardashti for an interactive evening that introduces attendees to the Sephardi piyut traditions from the Middle East and North Africa. This evening will not only allow you to hear and learn a few of these beautiful and poetic songs but will provide you with a cultural and historical lens for understanding why the paytanim (poets) wrote them and continued composing them up until the last century. This lecture will also highligh the important ways in which the music of these piyutim draws from secular Arabic and Middle Eastern music. Galeet will perform and teach a number of piyutim representing the Iraqi, Sephardi-Yerushalmi, Moroccan, and Iranian traditions.

Rimon:Master Classes in Judaic Studies with Galeet Dardashti
Performing Arab and Middle Eastern Music in Israel
Based on Galeet Dardashti's doctoral dissertation research in anthropology, these Master Classes chronicle the recent mainstreaming of Middle Eastern and Arab-influenced art music (musika etnit yisraelit) in the Israeli public sphere. Long-forgotten Iraqi septuagenarian musicians are only now asked to share their unique knowledge with receptive Israeli students and audiences; Palestinian and Jewish Israelis have formed a range of Middle Eastern and Arab-influenced bands; Israeli groups are performing interpretations of the music of Egyptian legends such as Oum Kalthoum and Farid El-Atrash for packed concert halls; and recently some of Israel's most noted secular rock singers have recorded their own renditions of Middle Eastern piyutim (Jewish praise songs). These developments over the past fifteen years represent an historical shift in Israeli cultural politics and indicate an openness to cultural diversity and a decline of the homogeneous Israeli national cultural identity that government policy had strongly encouraged since the State's inception. Through the music scene, Galeet examines this unique nationalist movement in Israel, examining how scholars can represent some of the complex cultural realities of this global era.

Flory Jagoda in benefit for Sarajevo Holocaust survivors, Arlington, VA, Apr 6, 2008

From Flory Jagoda:

Please join me for a splendid afternoon of Jewish Sephardic music on

Sunday, April 6, 2008 at 4:00 pm.

The one hour concert will be at Congregation Etz Hayim, the synagogue that has been my religious home since I first came to America in 1946.

I was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Before the madness of the Second World War, 14,000 Jewish people called Sarajevo home and it was known throughout Europe as /Chico Yerushalayim/ (Little Jerusalem) for its thriving Sephardic community. Today, sadly, there are only 160 Jewish survivors living there and most of them are elderly and ill.

They need our help and I am committed to sending them the help that they need.

To Buy Tickets and/or make a donation, please contact:
Congregation Etz Hayim, 2920 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22204
703.979.4466 / fax: 703.979.4458
www.etzhayim.net

Checks can be made to: Congregation Etz Hayim - Sarajevo Benefit Fund
Tickets are $20, with a discount of $5 off for seniors and students.
Children 12 and under are free. Please reserve your tickets in advance by March 31st .

A soul-stirring musical journey, "The Spirit of Sepharad: From Casbah to Caliphate” traces the unique migration of Sephardic music from medieval Spain, across North Africa, to the Middle East. Combining music, dance and illuminating projections, this dynamic mixed-media performance brings to life all the rich cultural strains that influenced Sephardic/Mizrahi Jews. Featuring an array of virtuoso musicians from multiple disciplines, the program includes songs of secular and liturgical origin, spanning many centuries to the present and many continents from Ancient Persia (present day Afghanistan and Iran), Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Greece, Syria, Turkey, The Balkans, Jerusalem and Kurdistan (then, as now, part of Iran, Turkey and Iraq). The musical story of a rich cultural heritage that synthesizes diverse influences, "The Spirit of Sepharad" is a celebration of the Sephardic/Mizrahi experience that invites the possibility of coexistence, tolerance, respect and peace among all peoples.

Featuring:

Gerard Edery (vocals, guitar, saz) master of Sephardic song, winner of the Sephardic Musical Heritage Award
Amir Vahab (vocals, saz, percussion) Iranian master vocalist of Persian sacred and folk music
Glen Velez (percussion) Three-time Grammy Award winning master drummer and composer
Ara Dinkjan (oud) Aremenian virtuoso who is considered one of the top oud players in the world
Barbara Martinez (dancer, vocals, narrator) Flamenco star dancer, singer and actress
Meg Okura (violin, erhu) highly acclaimed world music, classical and world chamber jazz virtuoso

Drawing from a life lived in Israel, South Africa and Brazil, where musical collaboration cuts through ancient conflict, Israeli born musician Guy Mendilow is sowing the seeds of peace with music.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Guy Mendilow Band includes world class musicians from Israel, Argentina, Japan and the United States. Or to find the group now partnering with international peacemaking organizations, such as Seeds of Peace, whose work with Palestinian and Israeli youth and adult educators helps forge the personal relationships so critical to communication and reconciliation.

DivahnGaleet Dardashti

Women's Night at the Sephardic Music Festival: Galeet Dardashti's The Naming followed by performances by Smadar and Sarah Aroeste

This is the story of why the brilliant Queen of Sheba shaved her legs, how the stunning Vashti laid down the line for her drunken husband, and how a mysterious witch spoke King Saul's doom and then served him a nice dinner. Dardashti's forthcoming solo release and multimedia performance, The Naming, draws on the Persian music deep in her bones to transform the ghostly outlines of Biblical women into full-blown flesh-and-blood personalities, combing emotional Middle Eastern-inflected musical delivery with powerful storytelling.

Lloica Czackis and Sorin Gheraliu, Paris, France, 22 May 2011

CONCERT / CONCERT

Avec Lloica Czackis et Sorin Gheraliu
with Lloica Czackis and Sorin Gheraliu

Dimanche 22 mai à 19h00 / Sunday, May 22, 7.00 p.m.

The music of the Jewish people reflects a perpetual motion from one country to another, one culture to another, various languages and modes of expression.

The stage shared by Lloica Czackis and Sorin Gheraliu is an encounter between a singer of Yiddish songs, with a nomad's heritage through seven countries and a Gypsy cymbalist from Rumania, descendent of a family of great Balkan musicians. It also recalls the distant memory of Jewish and Gypsy klezmorim who once played together in a world of Eastern Europe that no longer exists.

Their common language is music. Their music speaks various languages.

For the past five years, Lloica, sometimes accompanied by Sorin, have provided musical entertainment for Jewish cultural tours organized by Valiske.

If you have taken part in their trips, come and relive the past emotion. Hotegezugt, Savoie, France, 14 Jan 2012

Hebrew poems (piyyutim), chanted for centuries across the Diaspora, have been adapted to different melodies, evolving into a form of "Jewish world music" with roots in Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East.
This singing tradition, a core component of synagogue practice, has also entered secular life in Israel through public performances, workshops, and performing arts festivals, and is now spreading to North America. The program will include words by Professor Robert Alter, and a performance of traditional and contemporary musical interpretations by Schusterman Visiting Artist Yair Harel and the Ensemble Tafillalt (Jerusalem).

Jewish Nightlife: An Evening of Celebration with Poetry and Music, Berkeley, CA, 18 Dec 2014

Jewish Nightlife: An Evening of Celebration with Poetry and Music | Featuring UC Berkeley Students and the Piyut Bay Area Project directed by Yair Harel

Thursday, December 18, 5:00pm - 8:30pm
The Magnes
2121 Allston Way,
Berkeley, California 94704

Jewish Nightlife is a multi-disciplinary exploration of the nexus between the ritual performance of Jewish texts and social changes across Jewish history, including Hebrew poetry, music, and synagogue liturgy in Europe, in North Africa, the Middle East, and present-day Israel.

During the Fall Semester 2014, the project involved research, teaching, performance, and community participation. Thirty UC Berkeley undergraduate students participated in a new UC Berkeley course, team-taught by dr. Francesco Spagnolo, Curator of The Magnes, and Yair Harel, Schusterman Visiting Artist. During the same period, a group comprised of graduate students, artists, educators and clergy from the San Francisco Bay Area met weekly at The Magnes, researching and performing piyyutim, or Hebrew liturgical poems.

To celebrate the completion of this project, the program will include solo and ensemble performances by UC Berkeley students (5-6 pm) and participants in the Piyut Bay Area Project (7-8 pm), led by Yair Harel.

The program is free and open to the public.

Guy Mendilowhe Guy Mendilow Ensemble: Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom tour

Thu, Aug 27, 2015, 8pm
Shalin Liu Performance Center
37 Main St
Rockport, MA

Tix

Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom dives into Ladino tradition, from songs and stories carried by Sephardic Jews as they moved from Spain and settled along the Mediterranean’s northern coast to Greece and Turkey. In multicultural metropolises like Sarajevo, in picturesque island towns like Rhodes, Jewish culture-bearers recounted the romantic escapades and derring do of a cast of characters worthy of a cutthroat fantasy novel.

Multi-instrumentalist, singer, and skilled arranger Guy Mendilow and his four musical collaborators leap into this world: the intertwining music and storytelling conjure an imagi-nation lost to war and upheaval, recorded in a language that blends archaic Spanish with Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek. By digging deep into Sephardic scholarship and revitalizing the sound recorded on gritty field recordings, Mendilow and company bring tales to life, intertwining voices, percussion, and soulful playing to render these songs in all their color, drama, and heart.

Winter women's music with a vocal and string trio! Medieval Greek chants for Mary, Bulgarian Sephardic songs of cooking and drinking, Spanish Civil War tunes of La Pasionaria…and a singalong Union Maid at the end. Our all-genius, all-girl crew is Jewlia Eisenberg, Marika Hughes, Dana Lyn and Mazz Swift. The New Yorker describes Jewlia's music as "hilarious and touching, sweet and soulful." The Wire says we show a "dazzling display of vocal agility, wit, emotional flexibility, and imaginative depth." Show some love to the radical women in your life, this is a great date!

Our program commemorates the 500 year anniversary of the founding of the Venice Ghetto and the 400 years since Shakespeare's death. It's a fun program that combines Jewish repertoire: songs and liturgy in Yiddish, Hebrew, Italian, Jewish-Spanish (and Catalan!) with 'mainstream' songs and dances from 16th century Venice; the whole rounded off with texts drawn from Leon Modena's autobiography and legal documents of the era.

Since 1976, the Elias Ladino Ensemble has performed the songs of the Sephardic Jews in venues all over the world. Though Ladino is on the verge of extinction, in the hands of this ensemble the music remains as vibrant as the community once was. There is a "Ladino soundtrack" for every aspect of life. Many of the songs date back to ancient Spain while some reveal melodies and rhythms of the Balkan and Middle Eastern communities where Sephardic groups lived in exile.

Trio Sefardi, NYC, 17 Dec 2016

Please join us for a wonderful evening celebrating Sephardic music and culture on Saturday December 17. 2016 at the Highland Park Conservative Temple Congregation Anshe Emeth.

At 6:30 PM, a special film, Flory's Flame, will be shown before the concert. This recent documentary produced by two New Jersey filmmakers and shown at venues worldwide, celebrates legendary Sephardic National Heritage Fellow musician Flory Jagoda. Flory's daughter, Betty Murphy will be there to answer questions after the film. We also hope that 93 years young Flory will be able to attend.

At 8:00 PM, Trio Sefardi will celebrate this special Sephardic music with three amazing musicians including Susan Gaeta (vocals, guitar), who apprenticed with Flory Jagoda, Howard Bass (lute, guitar) and Tina Chancey (bowed strings). Trio Sefardi brings a unique perspective to this historic Ladino musical heritage that has been preserved through the efforts of Flory Jagoda and Trio Sefardi.
