The JEWISH WOMEN of REBETIKA
Within the provocative world of the early twentieth century urban Greek Café Amans, where flamboyant characters sang about desperate love, life and death, and the seedy side of life, there were a surprising number of celebrated Greek Jewish female vocalists. Included among them were Roza Eskenazi, one of the most renowned Greek singers of all time, and Stella Haskil, who sang together with legendary performers such as Vasilis Tsitsanis. On this side of the Atlantic, Jewish women, notably Amalia Baka and Victoria Hazan, found center stage in the immigrant Greek nightclubs and community celebrations of major urban centers, as well as within the American ethnic recording industry.
All four women were held in high esteem for their extraordinary singing of a beautiful and complex repertoire, both during their lifetimes and again in recent years. Their music, making use of Eastern scales and asymmetrical rhythms, lush with intricate embellishment, and profound in its emotional content and depth, found its way into the hears of several generations of devoted listeners.
Although widely embraced for their musical contributions to urban Greek cafe music and Rebetika, their histories as Jewish women are not widely known. Using live performance and excepts from personal and family interviews, acclaimed vocalist Carol Freeman, together with virtuoso instrumentalists Haig Manoukian (oud) and Beth Bahia Cohen (violin), pay tribute to these Greek Jewish singers with a fascinating look into the songs and lives of these extraordinary women.

With a diverse and accomplished lineup of Philly musicians, West Philadelphia Orchestra is an unusual and exciting ensemble in today's musical world. They began playing music from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and the klezmer traditions in late 2006, and have continued expanding and refining their sound and repertoire ever since. The band now plays original material that explores and experiments with traditional sounds, which can be heard on their 2008 release 'WPO.' As much a community as a band, WPO's performances are celebratory events. With their pounding drums and shimmering brass sounds, they inspire audiences to hold hands, dance, and sing along. Joined by trumpeter and vocalist Susan Watts, the West Philadelphia (Klezmer) Orchestra - a 6 piece ensemble with clarinetist Larry Goldfinger, trombonist Dan Blacksberg, pianist Adrian Banner, sousaphonist Jim Parker, and Gregg Mervine on drums - will play klezmer and Yiddish songs.

Critically-acclaimed and award-winning, Toronto’s Beyond the Pale is one of the most exciting ensembles in the Canadian folk, roots, and world music scenes. Their explosive acoustic sound is inspired by a wide range of cross-cultural influences, from European folk styles (Klezmer, Balkan, Gypsy, Romanian) to contemporary and North American styles (bluegrass, jazz, reggae, funk, and more). They are known for their instrumental virtuosity, infectious energy, and unique repertoire featuring both original compositions and inventive arrangements of traditional material. With spectacularly dynamic and exuberant live performances, Beyond the Pale’s unique genre-defying sound has delighted audiences of all kinds at major music festivals, concert theatres, and clubs across Canada and the US.
Beyond the Pale's most recent CD release "Consensus", an exciting and wideranging live set of all-new material, has met wide critical acclaim and received honours from the 2005 Canadian Folk Music Awards, 2005 Toronto Independent Music Awards, and Ontario Council of Folk Festivals 2005 songwriting Competition. Miri Ben-Ari, a Grammy award-winning violinist from Israel, has created her own unique sound by a revolutionary fusion of classical style with jazz, R&B and hip hop. She has been recognized as a musical pioneer. This classically trained musician has helped sell millions of records by collaborating with other Grammy award-winning artists such as Kanye West, Jay Z, Wyclef Jean, Alicia Keys, Wynton Marsalis, Britney Spears, Maroon 5, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson and John Legend among others.
She studied under the late classical master Isaac Stern and has earned the honor from New York's Apollo Theater as an “Apollo Legend.” She is known as “The Hip Hop Violinist,” the title of her latest album on Universal Records.

Pitom is guitarist and composer Yoshie Fruchter's musical experiment and exploration into the music that has inspired him. Taking cues from the punk/avante rock aesthetic of the experimental downtown Jewish scene, including John Zorn and Hassidic New Wave, this manic foursome plays wild and frenetic melodies, supported by a mixture of dreamlike tones and driving distortion. Maryland-native Yoshie Fruchter joins Jeremy Brown on violin, Noah Jarrett on bass and Kevin Zubek on drums to produce the next step in Jewish sound. Pitom’s first CD, released on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records, was noted as one of the best debut albums of the year by The Wall Street Journal.

The WILD BOHEMIANS are celebrating their 25th year of bringing the sounds, dance, and raucous joy of Mardi Gras to Philadelphia.
Founded by Pete Gumbo, who also leads Philly Gumbo and Zydeco-a-Go-Go, the band’s repertoire consists of any and all music from Louisiana, including Cajun, Zydeco, Dixieland, Mardi Gras Street Music, Jazz, R&B, and a specialty the Bohemians called Swamp Stomp.
Each Mardi Gras the Wild Bohemians play to jubilant dancing audiences. The celebration includes a parade held on a Sunday afternoon before Mardi Gras (February 15th this year) featuring the band marching down South Street, trailed by costumed revelers, stopping in every bar along the route for a short set and a tall drink. Then on Mardi Gras night, Fat Tuesday (Feb 24th this year), the band blows the roof off the joint, bringing an uplifting and almost religious experience to their fans.
The band members are professional musicians who play in other bands and venues all year round, but wouldn't miss this date with The Wild Bohemians. The lineup at times, consists of over 20 players on stage.

Festive gypsy brass band Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar ignites an "unbeatable Balkan dance party" (Songlines) in the Kimmel Center's Perelman Theater on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 7:30pm.
Hailed as the greatest of Balkan trumpeters, Boban Markovic, the legendary native of Serbia's gypsy brass heartland, has led his 13-piece Orkestar to international acclaim, enhancing the traditional repertoire with elements of jazz, Latin and pop, among others. Boban and his son Marko lead the Orkestar into new directions with their trail-blazing musical mix, which the New York Times calls a ""a stunning blast of exuberance and virtuosity."

This concert will feature some of classical music’s premier young voices from the Juilliard School of Music along with a special appearance by the legendary Itzhak Perlman, accompanied by his long-time collaborator, pianist Rohan De Silva. The performers include Juilliard’s Graduate Resident Quartet Biava String Quartet (Austin Hartman and Hyunsu Ko, violins, Mary Persin, viola, and Jason Calloway, cello) together with guest artists clarinetist Tibi Cziger, bassist Andrew Roitstein and percussionists Alexander Lipowski and Michael Caterisano and the N-E-W Trio (Andrew Wan, violin, Gal Nyska, cello, and Julio Elizalde, piano).
Works to be performed will include several rare masterworks from the early twentieth-century Russian Jewish school of composers. These include Alexander Krein’s 1910 Jewish Sketches, #2, Joel Engel’s Dybbuk Suite (1922), Leo Zeitlin’s Eli Zion (1914), Solomon Rosowsky’s Fantastic Dance, and Mikhail Gnesin’s Requiem Trio (1943). Complementing these older pieces will be a performance of composer Osvaldo Golijov’s contemporary classic, The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind (1994). Hungry For Music is a grassroots, volunteer-driven charitable organization with national and international outreach. Robert Wiener will present an hour-long version of his audio-video material on "Blacks and Jews in American Music" at the Asbell Center of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, this Sunday, October 7th, at noon. The program and bagel brunch are co-sponsored by Diversity Initiatives and the Music Department.
Music will range from spirituals, ragtime, jazz, gospel, show tunes, folk music, and popular music. Wiener will discuss how the music of American Blacks and Jews reflect the complicated relationship between these two groups. Song of the Lodz Ghetto is a song cycle in which memory and imagination freely interact to create a journey between present and past. Brave Old World's new Yiddish songs and compositions are interwoven with arrangements of the rare music created between 1940-44 in the Nazi ghetto of Lodz, Poland. Pittsburgh's own Steel City Klezmorim, a staple on the local music scene, has been making a name for themselves nationally and internationally. Band leader Henry Shapiro is part of a new generation of instrumentalists who bring a traditional sensibility to a non-traditional instrument. As a guitarist, he has forged an authentic sound and virtuosic style of klezmer. Joining him are the well-known klezmer maven and gypsy violinist Steven Greenman, the world-class cymbalim player Alex Fedoriouk, and pianist Josh Dolgin, a leading proponent of urban klezmer. The Israeli-born Moshav Band grew up on Moshav Meor Modi'im, a musical village located in the hills between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Moshav, primarily composed of brothers Yehuda (vocals, percussion), Meir (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Yosef (bass) Solomon, and David (vocals, guitar) comes on like a family of traveling minstrels, court jesters, and the old-age mystics all at once. Their music is rich with fiery rock/folk/reggae songs, spiced with the flavors of the Middle East. Steve Weintraub is indeed coming to Bolton St. Synagogue in Baltimore on March 4th and 5th. Klezzazz will provide backup, at least on the night of the 4th. On Saturday the 4th, we'll have a warm-up instructional session at 5pm, potluck dinner at 6pm and a dance party at 7pm until ??? The band is organizing it's repertoire around the dance music. $10 donation (kids and students free) but we won't collect money until after havdalah, which is right before the dance party. On Saturday the 4th, we'll have a warm-up instructional session at 5pm, potluck dinner at 6pm and a dance party at 7pm until ??? The band is organizing it's repertoire around the dance music. $10 donation (kids and students free) but we won't collect money until after havdalah, which is right before the dance party. Friday night is a Klezmer Kabbalat Shabbat , with all instrumental tunes composed by Adrianne. Service begins at 6:30 with dinner following.
Saturday evening is Havdala followed by a Malaveh Malkah dessert and dancing, with the above musicians plus guest clarinetist and lister, Tom Powalski. We'll dance the evening away with my leading of the freylekhs, sher, hora, and whatever else people are up for doing. (Social dancing as well, I'm told....so I will bring the keyboard and Tom will lug the sax. Something for everyone....)
Sunday morning will be a Hebrew school program introducing the kids to klezmer.

200 singers from HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir will be appearing at Merkin Concert Hall, 129 W. 67th Street, Philadelphia on Monday, February 21 (Presidents' Day) at 6 p.m. The singers hail from all points from Montreal to Washington, DC and from as far west as Los Angeles, coming together from their local ensembles to join their voices in regional choirs and then one large chorus. (We're also featuring a HaZamir Chamber Choir and an Alumni Ensemble). It is great to hear the next generation getting excited about Jewish choral music - and they'll be singing a variety of selections from Israel and America.

The Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival, a new annual concert series devoted to Jewish-themed classical music, will debut this spring. The festival is founded by cellist Aron Zelkowicz and will feature musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and guests. This year's theme is "A Vanished World", an exploration of Jewish culture in Eastern Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century

Atzilut: The Middle East Peace Orchestra will perform its only Philadelphia
area concert this spring on Sunday, April 18, at 7:00 PM at Mishkan Shalom
Synagogue on Shurs Lane in Manayunk. The concert will be followed by a
"meet-the-artist" reception with middle eastern desserts. This concert is a fundraiser
for the groups new cd combining Arabic and Jewish middle eastern music. $25
admission includes the new cd, to be mailed upon release this season. Teens: $10;

of Brave Old World at the Philadelphia Art Museum (main entrance with
seating on the stairs) on Friday January 9. They will be performing two
one-hour sets, the first starting at 5:45 and the second at 7:15; of course
people can come to both or either. Below some info about who they are, in

Hip Hop Hoodíos
Dec. 31 - Montclair, NJ - First Night (New
Years show)
The upcoming New Years Eve and Jan. 3rd concerts from Latino-Jewish urban music collective Hip Hop Hoodos promise lots of booty-shaking and laughs alike. Comprised of bilingual musicians from Jewish/Latino backgrounds ("hoodo is a twist on the word "judio" - Spanish for "Jew"), the members of Hip Hop Hoodos are linked by a common love for Latin alternative music, or rock and rap "en Espanol". But don't call these guys the Jewish answer to Tenacious D or the Latino respuesta to the Beastie Boys: Hip Hop Hoodos are out to change the notions and preconceptions of Latin music entirely. Following the groups recent standing room-only concerts at Joes Pub and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (as well as packed dates in Chicago and LA), Los Hoodios perform at Makor in NYC on Saturday, Jan. 3rd, and also have a special New Years Eve date at First Night Montclair in New Jersey.
