Handel's Judas Maccabaeus, St. Louis, MO, Dec 10

For the third year in a row the St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music will collaborate in presenting excerpts from - but most of - George Frideric Handel's oratorio "Judas Maccabaeus" in observance of the approaching season of Chanukah. The concert will take place Saturday evening, December 10th, 7pm at Congregation B'nai Amoona, featuring the University City Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dr. Leon Burke, III. Members of the Circle will sing the solos, and a choir of volunteers from the various congregational choirs will be joined by those members of the audience who have purchased scores. Other music to be performed will include the "Suite Hebraique" by Ernest Bloch featuring viola soloist Anna Lackshewitz, and an arrangement by me for male choir (quartet in this case) of a traditional Dutch melody for "Shenei Zeitim," a piyut for Shabbat of Chanukah.

Fleytmusik weekend, Bethesda, MD, Mar 3-5

FleytMuzik, with Adrianne Greenbaum, (flute) Pete Rushefsky (tsimbl)
and Marty Confurius (bass), will perform at Beth El in Bethesda, MD for a Shabbat weekend, March 3,4, and 5.

Friday night is a Klezmer Kabbalat Shabbat , with all instrumental tunes composed by Adrianne. Service begins at 6:30 with dinner following.

Saturday evening is Havdala followed by a Malaveh Malkah dessert and dancing, with the above musicians plus guest clarinetist and lister, Tom Powalski. We'll dance the evening away with my leading of the freylekhs, sher, hora, and whatever else people are up for doing. (Social dancing as well, I'm told....so I will bring the keyboard and Tom will lug the sax. Something for everyone....)

Sunday morning will be a Hebrew school program introducing the kids to klezmer.

Call 301-652-2606 for reservations and more info. (The office might be confused, somewhat, since the flyers said "Klezical Tradition" instead of FleytMuzik....same flutist, different ensemble....just so you know up front why the potential confusion on their part....) Hope to see some of you Southerners there!

In Memory of Avrom Sutzekever: A Public Program, YIVO, New York, NY, 22 February 2010

IN MEMORY OF AVROM SUTZKEVER: A Public Program
Monday, February 22, 2010
6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m.
at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research
Admission: Free

Avrom Sutzkever was a great Yiddish poet and a hero of the Jewish people. He was born near Vilna, spent most of his youth in the city, survived the Holocaust there, and then settled in Israel. From 1949 to 1995, Sutzkever edited the prestigious Yiddish literary journal Goldene keyt.

In the wartime ghetto, Sutzkever was drafted by the Nazis to work on a team sorting books from plundered Jewish libraries, including YIVO's; the most valuable of the books were to be shipped to an institute in Germany devoted to "Jewish studies without Jews," the rest destroyed. He and some of his colleagues, who were nicknamed the "Paper Brigade," risked their lives by removing rare books from the selection and burying them. After the war, he and others returned to Vilna to dig up their cache and send
much of it to YIVO in New York.

Avrom Sutzkever died on January 20. On the occasion of his shloyshim (one-month anniversary of his death), YIVO is holding a public program to pay tribute to his memory. Participants include:

Benjamin Harshav: Sutzkever's Poetry (Yiddish-English)
David Fishman: Sutzkever's Life (Yiddish)
Benjamin & Barbara Harshav: poetry reading (Yiddish-English)
Boris Sandler: a few words on behalf of the family of Yiddish writers (Yiddish)
Hy Wolfe, Shane Baker & Barney Zumoff: poetry reading (Yiddish-English)
Adrienne Cooper: two songs by Sutzkever (sung in Yiddish)
Recording of Avrom Sutzkever reading one of his poems (Yiddish)
Recording of Dan Miron lecturing on Sutzkever (English)

The program is sponsored by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the Congress for Jewish Culture-CYCO, the Forverts and the Workmen's Circle.

Sing Songs of Shabbat
Friday night, Mar 11, 2011, Various Locations

While Jewish music runs the gamut from the Balkans to Broadway, from the mournful to the madcap, there is no denying its roots are based in prayer melodies. This year, BJMF is proud to offer an innovative exploration of Jewish spiritual music in synagogues and on stage. No matter what your level of observance or practice, we think you’ll find inspiration at this very special weekend of divine musical sparks.

Another first! And not just for Boston, but for Jewish Music Festivals around the country. We’re proud to invite the public to attend one of four festive Kabbalat Shabbat Programs. What better way to experience the eclectic history of Jewish ritual music.

  • Cantor Yaakov Lemmer will be davening at the Chabad of the North Shore, 44 Burrill Street, Swampscott.

  • Neshama Carlebach will be a special Shabbaton guest and participate in Temple Emanuel’s Shabbat Alive! services, 385 Ward Street, Newton.
  • A Baroque Italian Kabbalat Shabbat, composed by Salamone Rossi of Mantua in the 1630’s, will be performed by Cantor Louise Treitman and her ensemble at Congregation B’nai Torah, 225 Boston Post Road, Sudbury.

All services are free but space is limited at each temple. Reservations for each event can be made via the email links below:

Saturday, March 15 8pm
Littlefield
622 Degraw Street
Brooklyn, NY

$10 IN ADVANCE (get your tickets now!) or $15 at the door, but make that $10 for those in wondrous and fantastical attire

As we have done in the past, and will do in the future, The Sway Machinery is throwing down for the good people of Brooklyn this Purim--the Jewish carnival festival of reversal, libido and libation...we will be observing, celebration style...we hope to see you all out and about sharing in the good cheer...and for those of you sporting costumes, there will be cheaper tickets...

In keeping with the flow of energies between Persians and Jews documented in the Scroll of Esther...The Sway Machinery will be joined by Mitra Sumara, a band that plays pre-Revolutionary Iranian pop music, leaning heavily towards the funkiness that was the zeit-geist of serious music heads in the '70s. You will surely enjoy what they bring.

Also in attendance will be local favorite and Mehanata regular, DJ Joro Boro, keeping things warm before, after and between sets.

Yiddish songs of struggle and protest, Sharon, MA, 19 May, 2017

Yiddish songs of struggle and protest Cantors Jeff Klepper and Becky Khitrik, with the Temple Sinai Choir present annual Gussman Service Fri, May 19, 2017, 7:30pm - 8:30pm Temple Sinai 25 Canton Street Sharon MA 02067 p: (781) 784-6081 "These biting songs are very different than the lullabies and comedic songs we often associate with Yiddish music. They are political songs, sung originally at meetings of the Jewish Bund (labor union) early in the 20th century. Some of them originated in Russia prior to 1917 and were brought here by Jewish immigrants. Many were composed and sung during labor strikes and rallies protesting the terrible conditions of sweatshops where so many, including children, were forced to work long hours at low pay." "Our Gusman Service on May 19th is not merely about Jewish art and collective memory -- it is a celebration of our people's long tradition of civic engagement and social concern. Please join us for this special musical event!"

785 Ridge Road
Hamden, Connecticut

This is the synagogue where we first started our project twenty years ago. This year is Rabbi Herbert Brockmanโ€™s last year leading the service as he will be retiring from Mishkan Israel in June. So this is a service that will be emotional and intense on many levels as Rabbi Brockman has always served as a beacon for social justice in the New Haven area and while we welcome change, in this case it will be bittersweet. The service is at 7:30 pm, but we will be giving a short pre-service concert beginning at 7:00 p.m. I hope you can join us for the entire evening as it sure to be one filled with hope and tears.
