Workmen's Circle Klezmer Jam, Brookline, MA, 12 Feb 2012

Well, it happens, the Patriots get to the Super Bowl and then the klezmorim get invited to participate. Rumor has it that Loren Sklamberg will sing the National Anthem and that the Yeshiva University Marching Band will perform at halftime. Even if that doesn't really happen, the Hub-Klez will be likely glued to their TVs.

So, the February jam will be Feb 12 Sunday 7-9 pm at the Workmen's Circle.
1762 Beacon St. Brookline.

Pianists should bring keyboards. Music is available for purchase.

January 26th
Johnny D's Uptown
17 Holland St., Somerville, MA (Davis Sq.) 02144
7:30-9:30pm
$10

We are returning to one of our favorite venues, Johnny D's Uptown (Davis Sq., Somerville) for a show that will surely be remembered. We always love to play at this classic Somerville spot and are continuing the tradition of providing stellar and entertaining opening bands for the show. Last Spring we brought the Underscore Orkestra gypsy band from Oregon, this fall we had the Elephant Wrecking Ball, and this time around we are getting the Trubaci Balkan Brass Band! They will start the show off with a blast of brass that will surely get the party started right! They mix traditional eastern european flavors with intense improvisation and tight rhythms and harmonies. Trumpets, saxophones, trombones, tubas and drums will be blowing the roof off. Following Trubaci, Klezwoods will be rocking the house with our usual Klezmer/Eastern European blend of hard grooves, improvisation and melodies.

This is a particularly special show for us, as we will be hitting the studio the very next day to record our next full length album! We will be travelling up to Syracuse, N.Y. for a weekend of recording at More Sound Studios. We are very excited to get rolling on this one, as it will feature a lot of new and original material as well as some classic repertoire that will make for an interesting and fun album to listen to.

So come out and see us off with a night of great music, food, drinks and company! We hope to see you out this Thursday night!

Elaine Hoffman Watts and Susan Watts, Philadelphia, PA, 11 December 2011

Klezmer Concert: The Philadelphia Folklore Project presents award-winning drummer Elaine Hoffman Watts and her daughter, acclaimed vocalist and trumpeter Susan Lankin Watts in an evening of klezmer music devoted to saying good riddance to all the mishegas (Yiddish for "€œcraziness"€ or "€œinsanity"€) in our world today. Klezmer is the celebratory music of Eastern European Jews. "€œGoodnight Mishegas"€ is a line in the Hoffman family's Goodnight Waltz, composed close to a century ago, with words recently penned by Susan. The Folklore Project invites people to sing along at the concert and, in celebration of family and community traditions, to reflect on possibilities for turning our woes into joy. Klezmer Conquest: A Battle of the Bands, Needham, MA, 11 December 2011

KLEZMER CONQUEST: A Battle of The Bands

Temple Aliyah

1664 Central Ave-Needham, MA
December 11th at 7 PM
$ 5 ticket

Join our special guest MCs, our Natick neighbors, Cantor Ken Richmond and Rabbi Shira Shazeer for an entertaining evening of Klezmer as four local bands hit the Aliyah bandstand. Having performed klezmer and Yiddish songs up and down the East Coast, in Israel, and in Eastern Europe, Ken and Shira will keep the program moving with their musical taklents, Yiddishkeit, and humor..

Our four Klezmer Kontenders are:

Klezjam who have playing together for nearly 3 years. We play at nursing homes, assisted living centers, and an occasional bar mitzvah and wedding. The band got its name from the fact that we met playing at two regular jams -- the Workmen's Circle jam and the Watertown.jam.

JCC Klezmer ensemble is a class of The JCC in Newton lead by Barry Shapiro. Barry has been along-time member of the Boston music scene and was a founding member of The Klezmer Conservatory Band, Shirim, and the B.S.O. (Barry Shapiro Orchestra).

Shir Madness plays a mix of Yiddish show tunes, folk tunes and hits from the Borscht Belt. The band plays all of the distinctive dances and styles -- bulgars, Terkishes, freylakhs, horas, shers, hongas, waltzes and marches -- all of them popular in Eastern Europe and in the U.S. in the early part of the twentieth century. The band especially loves the wild and swinging music from the golden age of the great bandleaders -- people like Dave Tarras, Abe Schwartz, German Goldenshteyn, Harry Kandel, and Naftule Brandwein. We also play original pieces written by our clarinet player, Richard Yospin.

The Shpilkes Klezmer Band has become a mainstay of the Purim celebrations and congregational events at various synagogues in MetroWest. The name "Shpilkes" ..(שפּילקעס).. is a Yiddish word for "nervous energy". The word is also sufficiently like the Yiddish term "shpil", meaning play, that it can help to think of it as "playing instead of sitting still". That's where Shpilkes Klezmer Band is at, hyperactive, ready to play and certainly not to sit still. No one can listen to Klezmer by Shpilkes without wanting to dance to its lively, living melodies and relating to the instrumental voices that sing of the human experience.

9 Volt is began as an unlikely collaboration between 2 accomplished band leaders: trombonist and New York City native, Rick Parker and Israeli guitarist Eyal Maoz. Festival, the Stone, 55 Bar and Blues Alley to name just a few. In addition, the two are in demand sidemen having performed along side the likes of John Zorn, Tim Berne, John Medeski and Frank Lacy.

monajatMonajat, A commissioned multimedia work by Galeet Dardashti
Granoff Music Center
Tufts University
Medford, MA
September 15, 2011, 8 pm

Monajat is inspired by Selihot, the poetic prayers of forgiveness recited during the month preceding the Jewish High Holidays according to Middle Eastern tradition. This period of deep reflection and spiritual preparation serves as a backdrop for Dardashti’s time-specific concert and program. The first-time U.S. presentation of Monajat combines participatory workshops, talks, prayer services, and other educational programs to enhance the spiritual and cultural experience. Dardashti, a performer and anthropologist of Iranian descent, re-imagines the Selihot ritual in collaboration with an acclaimed ensemble of Jewish and Muslim musicians, an electronic soundscape, and dynamic video projections by video artist and designer Dmitry Kmelnitsky.

Dardashti’s acclaimed ensemble of musicians includes Omer Avital (oud, bass, vocals), Amir ElSaffar (santour, vocals), Tal Ronen (bass, vocals) and Dafer Tawil (percussion, violin, ney, oud, vocals).

Deb Strauss and Jeff Warschauer's performances are an integrated and intimate blend of songs, translations and instrumental music grounded in tradition, yet thoroughly contemporary. They draw from Klezmer, Yiddish, Hasidic and liturgical music and culture, adding their own original compositions and song settings. As they sing and play in shifting combinations of violin, guitar, mandolin and accordion, they create a dynamic atmosphere with an exceptional range of feeling from delicate and refined to exuberant and foot-stomping. Deborah Strauss will be leading dancing for all who wish to join in! Hank Savin, Teller of Jewish stories opens the show.

Casco Bay Tummlers, Brunswick, ME, 4 Jun 2011

New World Premieres and Old World Chestnuts

Concert by The The Casco Bay Tummlers klezmer band
Saturday, June 4th at 7 p.m.
at the Frontier Cafe, 14 Maine St - Fort Andross, Brunswick, Maine

Join us in the casual atmosphere of the Frontier Cafe where you can enjoy supper or a drink and share new and old music with The Casco Bay Tummlers. The Casco Bay Tummlers have been playing Jewish music from around the world in their personal, engaging style to audiences in Maine and well beyond for over twenty years. It's been a while since they've performed in the mid-coast area so they are happy to be presenting a concert of new repertoire - including a film score by flutist/guitarist Carl Dimow - along with some of the classic klezmer tunes that have endeared them to their fans.

You can look forward to hearing colorful instrumentation - Carl on flute, bass flute, electric and acoustic guitars, Phil McGowan on drum set and ethnic percussion, Julie Goell on bass and vocals, Nancy 3. Hoffman on accordion and vocals and Steve Gruverman on sax and clarinet - and contrasting styles: jazzy improvisation, witty show tunes, Middle Eastern grooves and, of course, soulful klezmer interpretations, some reflective and some that will tempt you to get up and dance.

The Tummlers are pleased to note that Carl's film compositions were funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Food, wine and beer for sale at concert.

Zamir Chorale w/Middle East Harmonies, Cambridge, MA, 10 Apr 2011

The Zamir Chorale of Boston will present Middle East Harmonies at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 10. Conducted by Northeastern Professor and Zamir's founder and Artistic Director Joshua Jacobson, the concert will feature a meeting of the musical minds of the Middle East. Zamir will perform coordinated choral selections in both Arabic and Hebrew. We are thrilled to present as our special guests original members of Bustan Abraham in reunion. From 1991 until they disbanded in 2003, these Arab and Jewish musicians pioneered a unique form of instrumental music, combining elements of east and west, and Bustan was considered the finest ensemble of its kind.

The following evening, Monday, April 11, 7:30 pm at the Fenway Center, Northeastern University will host a symposium in conjunction with Middle East Harmonies. Presenters, including renowned ethnomusicologist Benjamin Brinner, will address the use of music to increase empathy and mutual understanding among people who have been separated by borders of various kinds and alienated by conflicting politics.

Cosponsoring and cooperating groups include: the Consulate General of Israel to New England, Northeastern University Departments of Music and Jewish Studies, Northeastern University's Middle East Center for Peace, Culture, and Development, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Harvard Hillel, the American Jewish Committee, the New Center for Arts and Culture, and Hebrew College.

Jews and Sufis: A Shared Musical Tradition
Musical Performance by Dunya and Panel Discussion

January 17, 7:30pm Congregation Beth El, Sudbury

Beth El of Sudbury is pleased to host JEWS AND SUFIS: A Shared Musical Tradition on Monday evening January 17 at 7:30. The evening’s program will include a panel discussion and concert exploring the historical interaction of Jews and Muslim mystics in Turkey.

A panel of scholars led by Dr. Edwin Seroussi, director of the Jewish Music Research Center in Jerusalem, will speak on cultural, historical, religious and musical aspects of Jewish-Sufi collaborations in Turkey from the 16th to the 20th centuries, followed by a dialogue with the audience. The program continues with a concert by Dunya, an ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists performing examples of Turkish Maftirim (Hebrew sacred poetry set to Ottoman sacred and secular music), Sufi devotional music and improvisations.

From the earliest days of Islam, some Muslims have been attracted to mystical interpretations of their religion. In Turkey, at least since the thirteenth century, Islamic mysticism has been expressed through participation in Sufi brotherhoods that serve as centers of spiritual and social life.

Similarly, mysticism and mystical experiences have been a part of Judaism since the earliest days. Examining the mystical aspects of both the Jewish and Muslim cultures can serve as a useful platform for exploring everyday interconnections among the communities.

The program, which is free and open to the public, is being sponsored Beth El’s Cantor’s Fund and Dunya www.dunyainc.org. For more information contact Congregation Beth El at 978-443-9622, or www.bethelsudbury.org.

Eatala: A Life In Klezmer: New documentary premiere & concert honors Elaine Watts and four generations of Philadelphia Jewish musicians
WHO: Elaine Hoffman Watts, Susan Lankin Watts & band
WHAT: Premiere of new documentary about a ground-breaking woman & concert of klezmer music from waltzes to freylechs, representing the legacy of four generations of Jewish musicians (Hoffman family) renowned in Philadelphia
WHEN: December 4, 2010 at 7:30 PM (Tickets: $10 - $30 through http://crossroadsconcerts.org)

Tickets ($10 - $30) are available through Crossroads Music (http://crossroadsconcerts.org/)

“The documentary Eatala: A Life in Klezmer is a loving portrait of Elaine Hoffman Watts, a renowned klezmer percussionist. The film shows how Elaine (her Yiddish name is “Eatala”), a feisty and determined musician, has broken barriers—as a musician, a working mother, and in her persistent devotion to her family’s klezmer music. Drawing on performance footage, family movies, historic photographs, and interviews, Eatala traces a klezmer tradition sustained over four generations in a single family— with a good dose of humor and joy. Eatala features performances by Elaine Hoffman Watts, Susan Lankin Watts and an all-star klezmer band with Josh Dolgin, Jay Krush, Rachel Lemisch, Hankus Netsky, Henry Sapoznik, and Carmen Staaf. Directed by Barry Dornfeld and Debora Kodish. Produced by the Philadelphia Folklore Project.

A klezmer concert featuring Elaine and Susan Watts and other musicians follows the screening. A special reception with refreshments for Chanukah will conclude this evening celebrating the accomplishments of some extraordinary Philadelphia musicians.

NYBC Paper Bridge Fest: Veretski Pass debuts "The Klezmer Shul," Amherst, MA, 15 Jul 2010

NYBC Paper Bridge Festival logoOne of the most special New England events occurs not during the Fall leaf-gawking season, but in mid-July—starting today, in fact—when the National Yiddish Book Center opens its annual "Paper Bridge" festival, a week-long celebration of Yiddishkeit with lectures, workshops, film screenings, and of course, Jewish music new and old.

This year features two special exhibits, Mayer Kirshenblatt's paintings in a traveling exhibit titled: "They Call Me Mayer July" (so what more appropriate month!??). I am a major fan of the exhibit, and of his pictures, which capture life in pre-Holocaust Poland in a way that is both sweet and yet eschews the shmalzification of the period. Kirshenblatt's exhibit is balanced by a look at "Esn! Jews and Food in America. It's a hard combo to beat. [Off-topic, I note that the Jewish Women's Archive, where I work, has recently begun featuring regular guest blogs—is that an oxymoron?—on food and new kosher recipes. Yummy!

The festival finale, and another absolutely-must-see evening is the East Coast premiere of Veretski Pass's new piece, The Klezmer Shul. "Inspired by the synagogues of pre-war Eastern Europe, The Klezmer Shul is rooted in Jewish liturgical melodic principles and emotionals intonations. This four-movement instrumental suite transmits the emotional power of synagogue singing without the use of words, incorporating elements of jazz, avant-garde, classical, klezmer, and folk music."

(Cambridge, MA) Rob Rudin's Half-Jewish: the “There Will Be Cake” biennial; plus Dirty Water Brass Band. Thurs., June 24, 10 pm. $10 suggested donation; includes dessert. Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Sq., Cambridge. For information log onto www.lily-pad.net or call 617-395-1393.

It's been two years since drummer Rob Rudin served up a nice piece of cake along with original music on the eve of his birthday. He may or may not be two years wiser, but he does have experience throwing a lively party at the Lily Pad venue. This year's concert features Rudin's new Jewish compositions and pieces by Jewish composers John Zorn and Leonard Cohen. Rudin will also premiere the suite Number 37 based on the life of world-champion athlete, jai-alai player Joey Cornblit, whose player number was 37.

"I put together the group Half-Jewish in order to play with some of my favorite musicians and to show that klezmer is not theonly Jewish music," says Rudin. The musicians include two Hot Tamale Brass Band members, clarinetist and saxophonistMark Chenevert and Danny Heath on trombone and vocals. Gill Aharon, who plays piano with his trio every Sunday at the Lily Pad, is along for the ride, as is trumpeter Sam Dechenne of John's Brown Body, HUMANWINE bassist Paul Dilley, violinist Mimi Rabson of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and multi-reedman Ted Roland.

This first-ever performance is being produced as a tribute to Holocaust victims and to mark the World Day of Prayer 2010, celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice. The production will feature survivors, performers, musicians and dancers featuring music composer Edwin Geist performed by The Irving Fine Society Singers & Ensemble.

“Budzyn” awakens our consciences to the question of theatrical representation dealing with religious identity. The story takes place at the Nazi controlled Budzyn labor camp in Poland, where the commander was well known for subjecting the prisoners to particularly cruel tortures and told as seen through the eyes of one of its survivors, Henry S. Newman,

The commander, knowing that the young Mr. Newman had studied dramatic arts in order to become a director, asks him to organize a small performance with the prisoners in order to entertain him. The catch, however, was that if the Commander didn't laugh, he would humilate Henry in front of the other prisoners before cutting his throat and assuring that he die in slow agony.

Visionary director Guila Clara Kessous uses all forms of art to transmit the testimony of this survivor while overcoming the simple reference to the Shoah by attacking the crucial question of theatrical representation.

contemporary compositions inspired by these tragic events.

This concert will be free and open to the public.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010, 8:00 PM
Johnny D's Restaurant & Music Club
17 Holland St., Davis Square, Somerville, MA

The Qadim Ensemble, a cross-cultural group of Jewish and Arabic musicians, has joined forces to play for peace on a new CD and concert tour. Produced by celebrated neyzen Eliyahu Sills and Six Degrees' artist Jef Stott, and released by Embarka Records, "Eastern Wind" debuted last summer at #7 on the Billboard World Music Charts. The peacemaking musicians will play one Boston area concert on this East Coast tour at Johnny D's in Davis Square, Somerville, April 7th.

The Johnny D's performance will feature Gari Hegedus on oud and saz, Faisal Zedan on Arabic, Moroccan, Persian & Indian perrcussion, Rachel Valfer Sills on lead vocals and oud, and Eliyahu Sills on ney, bansuri and oud.

"Eastern Wind" masterfully mixes the sounds of Middle Eastern instruments to create a collection of traditional and original songs that celebrate the shared musical and spiritual heritage of a region now deeply divided by ethnic and religious differences. Featuring folk tunes, improvisations, and songs of love and devotion from the 12th century onward, the eclectic ensemble uses traditional instruments to travel on a musical journey through Arabia, Armenia, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Turkey and Yemen.

Jef Stott's digital production brings to life ancient acoustic instruments, including the ney, oud, saz, bansuri flute, kemanche, tablas, doira, qarqaba, bendir, daf, zarb, riqq, darbuka, dhola, and upright bass. "Eastern Wind" features accomplished multi- instrumentalists and vocalists Bouchaib Abdelhadi, Eliyahu Sills, Evan Fraser, Faisal Zedan, Fares Hedayati, John Villa, and Rachel Valfer, the group's lead vocalist.

shulamis, Agassiz Theater, Cambridge, MA, December 6, 2009

Shulamis is Harvard's first-ever bilingual Yiddish operetta, on stage this December at the Agassiz Theater.

A century after the death of the Father of Yiddish Theater, Avrom Goldfaden, a group of Harvard University students is preparing a revival of his most famous Yiddish operetta – Shulamis. This landmark bilingual production of Shulamis will premiere in Harvard’s historic Agassiz Theater December 2 - 6, 2009, nearly seventy years after Shulamis opened as the very last production of interwar Yiddish theatre in Warsaw.

While wandering thirsty through the desert, beautiful young Shulamis is rescued by handsome Avsholem, who swears to marry her upon his return from Jerusalem. When Avsholem fails to come for her, Shulamis pretends to go mad in order to keep her vow to him, yearning both for his return and for revenge. Her choice is at the center of this timeless Yiddish operetta of love and deception, of the price of revenge and the power of forgiveness.

Featuring a new English translation by renowned Yiddish translator Nahma Sandrow, a haunting musical score compiled by Folksbiene artistic director Zalmen Mlotek, a live orchestra, masks, and innovative choreography, Shulamis will charm and inspire both Yiddish theater aficionados and those who are new to the Yiddish theater.

Performance dates:

December 2, 3, 5, and 6 at 8 PM

Matinee December 6 at 2 PM

All performances will take place in Harvard's historic Agassiz Theater in picturesque Radcliffe Yard in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Agassiz Theater is located just a few blocks from the Harvard Square T Station at 5 James Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.

Tickets: $15 general, $10 students/seniors. Discounts are available for groups of ten or more.

Tickets on sale now at the Harvard Box Office: 617-496-2222 or online at www.shulamis.org.

The Hip Hop Sulha, SOBs, New York, NY, November 11, 2009

shemspeed Hip Hop SulhaNEW YORK, NY – On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, Jewish and Muslim artists from the Tug of War Tour and Shemspeed will come together at New York’s SOBs at the Hip Hop Sulha. Performers include Israeli and Iranian rap duo Most Hated, DeScribe, spoken word artist Tahani Salah, beat boxer J. Stone, Dash Speaks, TJ Di Hitmaker, NSR and a special DJ set by Electro Morocco.

Founded by American-Israeli producer, Diwon, The Hip Hop Sulha reinvents the concept of the traditional Arab sulha (reconciliation) by bringing leading Jewish and Muslim hip-hop musicians together to celebrate peace and religious tolerance via the performing arts. In the past, the series has hosted Hadag Nachash, Saz, Sagol 59, and DJ Spooky to name a few. This evening will feature Chassidic Hip Hop, Reggae, and R&B, artist, DeScribe, Jamaican Dancehall artist, TJ Di Hitmaker, and NYC-based Israeli expatriates, Electro Morocco.

The Tug of War Tour is a thought-provoking and multi-dimensional artistic endeavor that explores narratives of conflict and co-existence between Muslims and Jews. The brainchild of Israeli-American M.C. Sneakas and M.C. Serch (of Third Bass fame and VH1’s White Rapper Show), the tour features the controversial rap group ‘Most Hated’ (consisting of Sneakas and Muslim-Iranian rapper Mazzi), in addition to spoken word poets Vanessa Hidary and Tahani Salah (both of whom have been featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam).

Be a part of this unique opportunity to see Muslim and Jewish creativity together on one stage on Wednesday, November 11th at SOBs - 204 Varick Street. Doors open at 8pm; tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Stay for the after-party with Diwon spinning.
