Echoes of the Holocaust, Durham, NH, 14 November 2010

Students, faculty members, and guests of the Department of Music present a lecture and four concerts that reflect upon the Holocaust of European Jews in the 20th century.

The music events of the Echoes of the Holocaust series feature pieces written by composers who died in Hitler's concentration camps, works written in the camps and performed by prisoners themselves, and
contemporary compositions inspired by these tragic events.

NYBC Paper Bridge Fest: Veretski Pass debuts "The Klezmer Shul," Amherst, MA, 15 Jul 2010

NYBC Paper Bridge Festival logoOne of the most special New England events occurs not during the Fall leaf-gawking season, but in mid-July—starting today, in fact—when the National Yiddish Book Center opens its annual "Paper Bridge" festival, a week-long celebration of Yiddishkeit with lectures, workshops, film screenings, and of course, Jewish music new and old.

This year features two special exhibits, Mayer Kirshenblatt's paintings in a traveling exhibit titled: "They Call Me Mayer July" (so what more appropriate month!??). I am a major fan of the exhibit, and of his pictures, which capture life in pre-Holocaust Poland in a way that is both sweet and yet eschews the shmalzification of the period. Kirshenblatt's exhibit is balanced by a look at "Esn! Jews and Food in America. It's a hard combo to beat. [Off-topic, I note that the Jewish Women's Archive, where I work, has recently begun featuring regular guest blogs—is that an oxymoron?—on food and new kosher recipes. Yummy!

The festival finale, and another absolutely-must-see evening is the East Coast premiere of Veretski Pass's new piece, The Klezmer Shul. "Inspired by the synagogues of pre-war Eastern Europe, The Klezmer Shul is rooted in Jewish liturgical melodic principles and emotionals intonations. This four-movement instrumental suite transmits the emotional power of synagogue singing without the use of words, incorporating elements of jazz, avant-garde, classical, klezmer, and folk music."

Tuesday night is a re-interpretation "The Firebird." Double Edge Theatre's interpretation of the classic Russian tale draws from the work of Mark Chagall and uses both the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Book Center to transport the audience into the imagination of the famous painter.

(Cambridge, MA) Rob Rudin's Half-Jewish: the “There Will Be Cake” biennial; plus Dirty Water Brass Band. Thurs., June 24, 10 pm. $10 suggested donation; includes dessert. Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Sq., Cambridge. For information log onto www.lily-pad.net or call 617-395-1393.

It's been two years since drummer Rob Rudin served up a nice piece of cake along with original music on the eve of his birthday. He may or may not be two years wiser, but he does have experience throwing a lively party at the Lily Pad venue. This year's concert features Rudin's new Jewish compositions and pieces by Jewish composers John Zorn and Leonard Cohen. Rudin will also premiere the suite Number 37 based on the life of world-champion athlete, jai-alai player Joey Cornblit, whose player number was 37.

"I put together the group Half-Jewish in order to play with some of my favorite musicians and to show that klezmer is not theonly Jewish music," says Rudin. The musicians include two Hot Tamale Brass Band members, clarinetist and saxophonistMark Chenevert and Danny Heath on trombone and vocals. Gill Aharon, who plays piano with his trio every Sunday at the Lily Pad, is along for the ride, as is trumpeter Sam Dechenne of John's Brown Body, HUMANWINE bassist Paul Dilley, violinist Mimi Rabson of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and multi-reedman Ted Roland.

This first-ever performance is being produced as a tribute to Holocaust victims and to mark the World Day of Prayer 2010, celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice. The production will feature survivors, performers, musicians and dancers featuring music composer Edwin Geist performed by The Irving Fine Society Singers & Ensemble.

“Budzyn” awakens our consciences to the question of theatrical representation dealing with religious identity. The story takes place at the Nazi controlled Budzyn labor camp in Poland, where the commander was well known for subjecting the prisoners to particularly cruel tortures and told as seen through the eyes of one of its survivors, Henry S. Newman,

The commander, knowing that the young Mr. Newman had studied dramatic arts in order to become a director, asks him to organize a small performance with the prisoners in order to entertain him. The catch, however, was that if the Commander didn't laugh, he would humilate Henry in front of the other prisoners before cutting his throat and assuring that he die in slow agony.

Visionary director Guila Clara Kessous uses all forms of art to transmit the testimony of this survivor while overcoming the simple reference to the Shoah by attacking the crucial question of theatrical representation.

The Qadim Ensemble, a cross-cultural group of Jewish and Arabic musicians, has joined forces to play for peace on a new CD and concert tour. Produced by celebrated neyzen Eliyahu Sills and Six Degrees' artist Jef Stott, and released by Embarka Records, "Eastern Wind" debuted last summer at #7 on the Billboard World Music Charts. The peacemaking musicians will play one Boston area concert on this East Coast tour at Johnny D's in Davis Square, Somerville, April 7th.

Featuring folk tunes, improvisations, and songs of love and devotion from the 12th century onward, the eclectic ensemble uses traditional instruments to travel on a musical journey through Arabia, Armenia, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Turkey and Yemen.

Jef Stott's digital production brings to life ancient acoustic instruments, including the ney, oud, saz, bansuri flute, kemanche, tablas, doira, qarqaba, bendir, daf, zarb, riqq, darbuka, dhola, and upright bass. "Eastern Wind" features accomplished multi- instrumentalists and vocalists Bouchaib Abdelhadi, Eliyahu Sills, Evan Fraser, Faisal Zedan, Fares Hedayati, John Villa, and Rachel Valfer, the group's lead vocalist.

shulamis, Agassiz Theater, Cambridge, MA, December 6, 2009

Shulamis is Harvard's first-ever bilingual Yiddish operetta, on stage this December at the Agassiz Theater.

A century after the death of the Father of Yiddish Theater, Avrom Goldfaden, a group of Harvard University students is preparing a revival of his most famous Yiddish operetta – Shulamis. This landmark bilingual production of Shulamis will premiere in Harvard’s historic Agassiz Theater December 2 - 6, 2009, nearly seventy years after Shulamis opened as the very last production of interwar Yiddish theatre in Warsaw.

While wandering thirsty through the desert, beautiful young Shulamis is rescued by handsome Avsholem, who swears to marry her upon his return from Jerusalem. When Avsholem fails to come for her, Shulamis pretends to go mad in order to keep her vow to him, yearning both for his return and for revenge. Her choice is at the center of this timeless Yiddish operetta of love and deception, of the price of revenge and the power of forgiveness.

Featuring a new English translation by renowned Yiddish translator Nahma Sandrow, a haunting musical score compiled by Folksbiene artistic director Zalmen Mlotek, a live orchestra, masks, and innovative choreography, Shulamis will charm and inspire both Yiddish theater aficionados and those who are new to the Yiddish theater.

Performance dates:

December 2, 3, 5, and 6 at 8 PM

Matinee December 6 at 2 PM

All performances will take place in Harvard's historic Agassiz Theater in picturesque Radcliffe Yard in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Agassiz Theater is located just a few blocks from the Harvard Square T Station at 5 James Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.

The Hip Hop Sulha, SOBs, New York, NY, November 11, 2009

shemspeed Hip Hop SulhaNEW YORK, NY – On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, Jewish and Muslim artists from the Tug of War Tour and Shemspeed will come together at New York’s SOBs at the Hip Hop Sulha. Performers include Israeli and Iranian rap duo Most Hated, DeScribe, spoken word artist Tahani Salah, beat boxer J. Stone, Dash Speaks, TJ Di Hitmaker, NSR and a special DJ set by Electro Morocco.

Founded by American-Israeli producer, Diwon, The Hip Hop Sulha reinvents the concept of the traditional Arab sulha (reconciliation) by bringing leading Jewish and Muslim hip-hop musicians together to celebrate peace and religious tolerance via the performing arts. In the past, the series has hosted Hadag Nachash, Saz, Sagol 59, and DJ Spooky to name a few. This evening will feature Chassidic Hip Hop, Reggae, and R&B, artist, DeScribe, Jamaican Dancehall artist, TJ Di Hitmaker, and NYC-based Israeli expatriates, Electro Morocco.

The Tug of War Tour is a thought-provoking and multi-dimensional artistic endeavor that explores narratives of conflict and co-existence between Muslims and Jews. The brainchild of Israeli-American M.C. Sneakas and M.C. Serch (of Third Bass fame and VH1’s White Rapper Show), the tour features the controversial rap group ‘Most Hated’ (consisting of Sneakas and Muslim-Iranian rapper Mazzi), in addition to spoken word poets Vanessa Hidary and Tahani Salah (both of whom have been featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam).

Be a part of this unique opportunity to see Muslim and Jewish creativity together on one stage on Wednesday, November 11th at SOBs - 204 Varick Street. Doors open at 8pm; tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Stay for the after-party with Diwon spinning.

Dudu Fisher, Symphony Hall, Boston, MA, November 1, 2009

Known for his stirring performance on Broadway as Jean Valjean in LES MISERABLE and as a world famous Israeli cantor, Dudu Fisher brings an exciting and visually stunning show to Boston’s Symphony Hall (303 Mass. Avenue) on Sunday, November 1, at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $45-75 and can be purchased at www.bso.org or by calling 888.266.1200.

Based on his highly successful PBS special, IN CONCERT FROM ISRAEL, Fisher will take the audience on an inspired journey connecting his talent as a Broadway performer, cantor, and contemporary artist with music and stories that celebrate the beauty of Israel's landscape, culture and people.

Fisher has performed on the stages of Broadway, the West End in London, Israel, and throughout the world, including singing with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Zubin Mehta, recording an album of show tunes with the London Symphony Orchestra, and performing for Britain's Royal family and Bill and Hillary Clinton. He is the only Broadway performer to receive a Broadway contract allowing him to observe the Jewish Sabbath by not performing on Friday evenings and Saturday matinees, a recognition of his talent and dedication to the role and a constant source of pride and accomplishment in his career.

Fisher'€™s Fall 2009 North American Tour is a celebration of the PBS television special that capitalizes on his incredible vocal and artistic range and features a repertoire that goes well beyond the television show. It tells the story of a cantor who finds success on the stages of Broadway, but who never forgets his home or the musical landscape of Israel. The tour concludes with shows in Toronto on November 5 and in Baltimore on November 7.

Shulamis, Agassiz Theater, Cambridge, MA, December 5, 2009

Tickets: $15 general, $10 students/seniors. Discounts are available for groups of ten or more.

Tickets on sale now at the Harvard Box Office: 617-496-2222 or online at www.shulamis.org.

Film Screening and Discussion on the Economic Crises

During the economic boom of the 1920s, thousands of immigrant Jewish factory workers managed to build the house of their dreams, a cooperative apartment complex at the edge of Bronx Park. Then they were hit by the Great Depression. At Home in Utopia bears witness to an epic social experiment across two generations in the Coops - a place the local cops called "little Moscow" - where people tried to change the American dream into one that included racial justice and workers' rights.

The discussion after the screening will use the film, At Home in Utopia, to inspire an intergenerational conversation about collective action in the context of the current economic crisis. The Jewish workers in the Coops fought alongside others to win the social safety net that we're now at risk of losing. Where are our sources of collective identification today and what alliances do we need in order to fight for economic justice for all?

Sponsored by Boston Workmen's Circle, New England Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish Organizing Initiative, Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action, and Moishe/Kavod House, with Filmmakers Collaborative; made possible by the Mass. Humanities and Puffin Foundation. At Home in Utopia is a co-production of Michal Goldman and ITVS in association with WGBH.

Israeli String Orchestra of Arad, Newton, MA, 17 Jun 2009

The Israeli String Orchestra of Arad comes to Newton for one performance

In an unusual visit outside of Israel, the 13-member string orchestra of Arad arrives at Temple Reyim, Newton, for one concert, Wed. evening, June 17. 7:30 pm. Long considered by many to be one of the best in Israel, the orchestra is performing its first concert outside of Israel since 2006, when it toured Canada.

Consisting of young talented musicians, the orchestra plays classical and modern pieces, including pieces by Israeli composers. Some pieces feature vocals in Hebrew, Yiddish, or English. Much of its repertoire is played by the finest orchestras all over the world.

The orchestra comes from Arad, Israel, a small town that lies at the border of the Negev and Judean deserts, between Beersheva and the Dead Sea. The modern town sits near the site of Tel Arad, an ancient city of the same name. While visiting Newton, the orchestra will be hosted for two nights in the homes of Temple Reyim members.

The only performance by the orchestra in Newton will be Wed., June 17, at 7:30pm at Temple Reyim, 1860 Washington St. The cost is $10 for adults; free for students and children. Temple Reyim is handicapped accessible with plenty of free adjacent parking and easy access from the Woodlawn MBTA stop (Green line, D train). For more information contact the Temple Reyim office, 617-527-2410

Nussbaum - Smidl - Ougaard, Copenhagen, Denmark, 29 May 2009

Nussbaum-Smidl-OurgaardNussbaum - Smidl - Ougaard
Fredag d. 29. maj kl. 21:00

shirimShirim

Klezmer at the Lilypad, with a special emphasis on the Romanian roots of klezmer- some great Romanian tunes will be thrown into the mix. Also, we will be the Shirim Klezmer Quartet this month—core members Glenn Dickson, Michael, Eric & Jim, who have been playing together for longer than we can remember will be holding the klezmer fort alone this time. It should be a lot of fun. Bring your kids, bring your grandmother! The last show was packed, there was kozatski dancing and a line dance that went out onto the sidewalks of Cambridge! A real party! Let’s do it again!

Here are the details:

May 24, 2:00pm at the Lilypad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Square, Cambridge, MA Suggested donation, $10, $7/kids.

This special performance will feature the four members who have been with the band the longest: Glenn Dickson, clarinet; Michael McLaughlin, accordion; Jim Gray, tuba; and Eric Rosenthal, drums. They have been playing together for over 15 years and have a rapport and tightness that only comes with such experience together.

For a thousand years, the Jews of Europe poured out their deepest feelings and chronicled the events of their times through Yiddish folksong. In this program, we will explore how Jewish poets and musicians continued to tell their story through song, even as the almost incomprehensible events of the Holocaust period unfolded around them, A multi-instrumentalist, composer, and ethomusicologist and scholar, Hankus Netsky is chair of the Contemporary Improvisation Department at the New England Conservatory, Vice President for Education at the National Yiddish Book Center, and founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, an internationally renowned Yiddish music ensemble. He has composed extensively for film, theater, and television, and has collaborated extensively with such artists as Itzhak Perlman, Robin Williams, Joel Grey, and Theodore Bikel. Hankus has produced numerous CDs on the Rounder and Vanguard labels and co-produced two CD's with Itzhak Perlman on EMI.

Hankus Netsky Presents The Music of Morris Hollender, Waltham, MA, 5 Apr 2009

Hankus Netsky, courtesy National Yiddish Book CenterHankus Netsky Presents The Music of Morris Hollender

On Sunday, April 5th at 4PM Temple Beth Israel of Waltham will sponsor a concert featuring nigunim, klezmer tunes, cantorials, and Yiddish folk songs from the repertoire of Morris Hollender, the temple’s long-time baal t’file (lay cantor) and baal korey (Torah reader). The concert, organized by local musician, ethnomusicologist, and Temple member Hankus Netsky, will feature prominent local singers and the twenty-piece New England Conservatory Jewish Music Ensemble.

Originally from Carpato-Ruthenia, Morris Hollender’s father, uncle, and brothers were all renowned for their singing and their knowledge of nigunim (melodies) from local and legendary Hassidic rabbis and traditional cantors. A survivor of Auschwitz and a former resident of postwar Czechoslovakia, Mr. Hollender emigrated to America with his wife, Edith (also a survivor) in 1968. The April 5th concert is the result of Hankus Netsky’s ongoing work with the Mr. Hollender through the National Yiddish Book Center’s “Discovery Project,” an activist Jewish cultural recovery project that he directs. “It is extraordinary to have the opportunity to bring this precious Jewish musical legacy back to life, and to be able to pass these treasures on our students and to the general public,” says Netsky.

Temple Beth Israel is located at 25 Harvard St.
in Waltham, one block from Main St. on the 70 bus line. Tickets are $10 (a special $5 rate is available for Beth Israel members). The synagogue is fully handicapped accessible. For more information call 781 894 5146, or contact the temple at www.tbiwaltham.org. Group discounts are also available.

Josh Horowitz & Cookie Segelstein, Madison, CT, 11 Jan 2009

On Sunday Jan. 11, 2009 at 1:30pm, Friends of Scranton Library invite you to
kick off the new year with an energetic musical program by The
Horowitz-Segelstein Duo at Scranton Library, 801 Post Rd., in Madison, CT. Cookie
Segelstein
and Josh Horowitz, both accomplished and celebrated local
musicians, carry on the ancient tradition of klezmer in an unbound,
energetic village style playing Jewish instrumental music of historical
Eastern Europe. These two musicians represent a new generation of players of
Klezmer music which reaches back at least 125 years in time to Eastern
European Jews and traditional folk music using familiar and possibly
unfamiliar instruments—the tsimbl, a 19th century Button Accordion and a
violin. Program is free and open to the public of all ages. Light
refreshments will be served. Handicapped accessible. For directions to
Scranton Library or to RSVP, please call (203) 245-7365.
